Very high latency spikes to EU servers - Problem hop seems to be ae1-br01-eqld5.as57976.net

Today, I’ve been having some very high latency spikes. Usually, I get a solid latency in the range of 40-60ms. Today, even just stood in town, that’s been going up to 250-300 ms. Whilst engaged in combat, e.g. in a rift or a GR, I’m getting spikes of over 1100, with noticeable 1+ second pauses in game responsiveness, and map areas not being drawn in the client. In-game chat suggests that lots of other people are also affected. So, ran WinMTR traces to both EU server IPs and here are the results…

Traces were run around 16:10 British Summer Time (GMT+1) on 29th April, 2020.
Connection was ADSL.
ISP was BT.

It looks like it’s ae1-br01-eqld5.as57976.net that has the problem with the worst inter-hop latency having spiked to over 2400ms.

[Important]
Other affected players, please follow the advice here… Running WinMTR …and post your results as this will confirm or rule out if we’re all being affected by the same hop.

Hello,
I have the same problem here. The game can’t be played.

Hi there,
same here when connecting in UK,
I have BT internet but checked on GIFF GAFF mobile same thing,
Is this happening to UK users only ?

!up
i’ve posted about this in the wrong thread apparently,
Also having high ping issues since this morning, game keeps jumping from 80ms to 2000+
getting rolled back even in town

Hello,
It isnt’t a UK problem . Its a general one. Seems like a EU server is not working properly.

Guys, post your WinMTR reports.
The more info they have, the more likely they’ll be to fix it.
Of course, they have a maintenance scheduled for early tomorrow morning, so reboots may resolve it if they don’t acknowledge this before then.

I confirm it is a general problem, I have the same issue since this morning, alternating between 80 to 2000+ ms and having a lot of rollbacks and freezes. I’m a french player playing on the EU server. It would be nice to have some feedback on this, other than “check your own connection”. Thank you

IMHO the problem is the 2nd server - 185.60.112.158 - no response after blizz gateway. i get the same latency 1400 between blizz gateway and 185.60.112.157 and no response to 185.60.112.158

Yep, that’s the same hop as I was having issues with.

Hi Meteorblade,

as57976.net is part of Blizzard’s network and they are configure to de-prioritize ICMP (i.e. test messages used in WinMTR, ping, … etc.).

However, that doesn’t mean no problem. Just, their numbers are irrelevant.

The last hop does show some sign of problem.

In your first hop, you had 4% and 9% data packet loss. That may contribute to the data loss of last hop:

I’d recommend power-cycling your network devices and flush DNS to see if you can eliminate the data loss in the first hop. https://eu.battle.net/support/en/article/112206

Run a new WinMTR test and the result may be more clear then.

Note: I haven’t rule out server-side issue. Problems often happen after maintenance.

In your second log, there were 70% data packet loss at the first hop. But it were fine in the first log. Perhaps you should re-do the second test. If issue continues, try power-cycling your network devices and flush DNS .

Note: I haven’t rule out server-side issue. Problems often happen after maintenance.

Some data packet loss at telia.net.
Propably due to Ongoing Slow Download Speeds.

Note: I haven’t rule out server-side issue. Problems often happen after maintenance.

Hi to all. All day the same problem. All play the game ia unplayable.

Game is unplayable at this point. Screentearing, map not loading etc. Even thought the game broke when the RG didn’t drop loot earlier, but it did drop after 4-5 seconds. :]
Sitting on 300Mbit fibre in Sweden. Only D3 is acting up, everything else is working as usual.

About as57976.net, see my reply above: Very high latency spikes to EU servers - Problem hop seems to be ae1-br01-eqld5.as57976.net - #11 by Maskraider-3992

If you want others to analyze the report, please attach the full report in your post.

How you explain this:
|blizzard-ic-348624-prs-b8.c.telia.net|0|2458|2458|39|45|585|41|
|185.60.112.157|6|2014|1901|42|58|78|43|

blizzard-ic-348624-prs-b8.c.telia.net

From the host name, it seems to be the gateway between telia net and Blizzard. But I’m not that expert. I may be wrong.

I don’t find any particular problem from the numbers you quoted.

185.60.112.157

This is the last hop, ie the server. The 6% data packet loss doesn’t sound good to me. Need Blizzard to answer you.

The trace to the .157 server had the high latency.
The trace to the .158 server did not.
If the issue was client-side, the issue would be in both traces.
We see the same thing in other players’ traces.

According to the Battlenet launcher, the scheduled maintenance is for 03:00-04:00 CET tomorrow morning. As we got no blue response, I guess we’ll see if the maintenance fixes it or not.

[ EDIT ]
Just did a quick GR80 to re-test (around 23:25 BST), which was absolutely fine, whilst running a WinMTR in the background, with this result…

The hop which was a problem earlier is no longer showing horrendous spikes / packet loss. I have not reset my local equipment between this trace and the traces from earlier.

Hi Meteorblade,

Actually I did run a WinMTR on .157 before I replied. I couldn’t replicate the result. My report looked clean (0% loss) . Though I didn’t play the game in EU realm.

From your logs, both 157 and 158 had packet loss. Seem some problem near server end but I couldn’t pin point it.
