Can't I use my old charecter for Season of Witchcraft?

So I am fairly new to Diablo 4, and I havn’t played the game since the start of the year, but to night I wanted to try the new season. I log into my first character, but nothing new shows up. Do I really have to make a new character in order to play the new season? Seems stupid, since I am invested in my character, and I want to continue the story on that one.

You have to start a new character each season, there is no way arround that. The whole point of seasons is to have everyone start fresh on a even playing field.

Since the season started almost 3 weeks ago, and you say you are new and haven’t finished the story yet, i would assume you dont play a lot? If this is the case, i would advise you finish up the story on your current character, and then, depending on how long that takes you, create a seasonal character, skip the story on that one (a option to skip campaign will be unlocked in the character creation after finishing the campaign once), and jump right into the seasonal questline.

Another word of advice, make of it what you will, but if you have interest in becoming a seasonal player, dont get too invested in or attached to a specific character, because this is not the kind of game for that, you will pretty much be dumping that character for a new one every 2-3 months when a new season starts.
If you want that kind of attachment to a character, you are better off sticking with eternal realms, where your character is forever, but that also means you wont be able to participate in seasonal activities.
It’s a tradeoff, you get one or the other, not both.

Im guessing this is not the answer you were hoping for, but this is how ARPG’s work. Diablo 2 ladders, Diablo 3 seasons, Diablo 4 seasons, Path of Exile leagues, you name it, all of them require you to start fresh on a new character if you wanna participate in seasons.
