Alternatives to Aluneth

Curious as to what cards you’d replace Aluneth with in a Secret Mage deck.

Coldlight Oracle comes to mind immediately, assuming you don’t mind giving your opponent extra cards (Or maybe you do it intentionally to burn them).

I always like acolyte of pain as a draw alternative, especially in mage with their ability to ping (which might be bad tempo in a secret deck, but hmm)

there’s the 3 mana draw 2 cards mage class card and the spell version of coldlight oracle (research project).

coming to think of it, I like research project best because while coldlight oracle gives you an extra 2/2 for 1 mana, I think the mana discount which enables higher tempo for you is the better choice because after all you wanna get out your spells and an extra 2/2 might not make for a big difference.

just keep in mind though that aluneth cannot accurately be replaced. it’s a card that draws you 3 cards every turn in a deck that has the means of dishing them out in high volume, which is part of the deck’s strength. you outvalue your opponent by having MUCH higher tempo (regarding the amount of cards you can play because of mana reductions and the insane 4 card draws each turn) and you try to convert this into a kill before you run out of ammo.

replacing this draw engine with any of the cards Roga and I suggested does mess up the balance of your deck a bit because now you don’t have that engine in your deck that continually supplies you with the fuel needed to tear down your opponent. instead you now have some card draw and you need to hope that the order of your cards is much more favorable because in general you draw way more slowly, meaning you have less tempo and thus less strength.

this is a too long way of saying that if you wanna commit to the deck, you might wanna think about crafting the card instead of replacing it.

Sadly none, or at least nothing even close to eficiency.

Alunet guarantees 3 cards / turn / no conditions
Much harder to destroy then any other card (can’t be targeted by spells, or minions, and doesnt trigger secrets, only way is with a limited number of destroy weapon effects) so it guarantees to stick for several turns.

In those turns you take 4 cards/turn (1 native draw, 3 from Alu) the mai strenght of that is that it refils your hand for the first two turns and drasticaly increases your chance to draw finisher/s

a tempo decks run out of steam pretty fast (by turn 5-6) Alu gives unprecedent advantage that none other card will.

so yeah - thats it. I’m hardly battle-ing the idea of cards being unreplacable, but in this case for that deck Alu is one of the MUST HAVE core cards, that makes huge difference, to the point where games are decided if you have it on curve or not.

Research project is probably the best replacement for Aluneth imo but like others have said this is one of the core cards you need for the deck so work on crafting it ASAP but you should still be able to win games without it just not as many as you would with Aluneth.
