Frequent lagspikes has suddenly started

I’ve run Heroes of the Storm for years, but this problem started yesterday. When I play Heroes of the Storm I have a periodic stutter or lagspike every 20 seconds or so, sometimes more frequent and sometimes less. I am running a i5-4690K, 16GB of ram and a RTX 2080 video card. Running the resource monitor shows no significant changes around the time the lag occurs, and I am nowhere near full capacity on any of the parts.

The lag started suddenly yesterday and I have been trying to find a solution since then. The computer has not been moved or had any components changed from before the lag began. I am running a wired network connection to a shared 10gigabit. I am not able to change any options with regards to router or similar since this is a dorm room.

I am running the latest graphics update from Nvidia, but when the lag started I was running the previous version.

I’ve heard training mode is run offline. I’ve tried that and still had the stutters.

Here’s what I’ve attempted so far.

Game specific:

  • Reinstalled the game
  • Deleted cache
  • Reset game options
  • Run at lower graphics

Firewall and antivirus:

  • Tried running program as trusted or untrusted
  • Tried running with and without firewall
  • Ran a full scan of system for any virus or similar

Computer:

  • Unmount old HDD
  • Reset all network settings
  • Flush dns and ip reset
  • Closed all other processes that I could such as OneDrive and Xbox app.

Nvidia control panel:

  • Upped pre-rendered frames to 4
  • Set power management mode to prefer maximum performance.
  • Set Tiple buffering to On

I also ran WinMTR for the European servers. Test was done over 5 minutes where there were frequent and sometimes long stutters. Results are as follows:

Hello Alek,

The MTR shows data loss right from the start when you enter your ISPs network. Please get in touch with them and show them the data.

Kind regards

What’s your opinion?

I have to ask for more help.
First of my ISP could not find anything on the line.

I have since then moved to a new city and changed ISP. I still have the same issue with lagspikes, and I can see high loss in data from the host to my PC. I have tried new cables and all of the previously mentioned options. I have no idea what is the root cause.

Good morning Alek,

You should check if there is a newer driver available for your network adapter. You could also Power cycle your devices and check for a firmware update for the router.

Kind regards
