My mic works in all other games and even works in the Blizz Launcher mic test but it doesn’t work in Overwatch. I can join voice chat in OW and I can hear others talking but when I talk nothing happens.
These are the things I’ve tried with no luck:
- Checked all settings in OW in every combination possible and reset to defaults
- Checked all Windows settings
- Reinstalled Overwatch
- Reinstalled Windows
- Tried various things with the OW settings.ini
- Turned off firewall temporarily to check there is no issue there
I’m at a loss now…

Hey there Nabob,
If you’re able to join the Voice Chart Channel, and can hear your team mates talking, but are unable to respond, this can mean the Overwatch is being blocked from accessing your Microphone.
A recent Windows Update may have disabled this setting. To allow access to your microphone:
- Open the Start Menu.
- Click Settings.
- Click Privacy .
- Click Microphone.
- Toggle Let apps use my microphone to On. If this setting is already set to On, try toggling the setting to Off first, save the setting, and toggle it back to On.
If the above suggestion doesn’t help, can you collect System Files from your Computer, and then upload them to a file host site (like Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, or Pastebin), and share the link with us here.
Note: it’s possible you may not be able to share links directly, and if that is the case please select/highlight the link and click the </> button on your editor to convert the link to Preformatted Text.
THanks for the reply, I’ve tried the microphone privacy settings but that didn’t seem to make a difference unfortunately.

Thanks for getting back to us with your system files. These are looking pretty good for the most part but I can see a number of changes we can make to address the issue thanks to these.
As a first step, it appears that you have Overwatch installed to the same folder as the Battle.net application. This can cause permission issues and I would ask that you move the app to another location on your machine.
I also noticed that you have some quite old drivers for your sound card. Lets uninstall the current ones and install the most recent ones found here.
If the issue persists after this, let’s try renaming the following folders:
- Press windows key + R
- Type %localappdata%
- Click OK
- Rename the Battle.net and Blizzard Entertainment folders
Anyone of these changes may resolve the issue effecting your Mic so give the game a try after each one.

I moved battle.net into the parent directory (D:\Apps), I also installed the latest driver on that page (0009-64bit_Win7_Win8_Win81_Win10_R282.exe) and renamed those folders (recreated successfully when launching OW next).
But my mic still isn’t working. Do you have any other ideas?
The only thing I can think of is buying a new cheap mic to use as a test, but it’s just weird that my current mic is working in Discord and Battlenet app etc but then nothing in OW.
