Overwatch does not get past the login screen because it keeps switching back and forth from “connecting to game server” and “game server connection failed… retrying”
It loaded fine just a few hours ago so i have no clue what is causing the issue.

Could you restart your modem/router (unplug the power cable for about 30 seconds) and your computer itself, and retest afterwards?

Ive just tried that and it hasn’t worked
i have fixed the problem.
the issue was caused by my VPN changing its location on its own. setting the the VPN back to my desired location has allowed me to load overwatch again.

Do note that VPN/Proxy usage can cause some odd issue at times, and is not something we would recommend using. If you do encounter connection issues of any type in the future, we would ask you to remove these completely during testing.
