As a new human hunter I was supplied a wolf for a pet. What are the pro’s and con’s of getting a new pet and how do I tell if it will be any better/more use than the wolf? And can I have more than one pet?
Regards

Hey, so all hunter pets do the same base damage, so if you’re just worried about damage, any pet will be fine!
Different pets are part of different specializations, which give a different ability from your pet to you (for example, cunning pets provide a speed increase and the “Master’s Call” ability). In addition to this, different pets have different abilities which will provide different levels of utilization based on what you’re doing (for example, some pets can dispel magic and enrage effects offensively, others can apply mortal strike effects which is useful in PvP etc), it’s good to experiment and see what works for you, but if you’re more interested in reading up you can look at some community guides on hunter pets here ![]()
As you progress you’ll eventually unlock 5 pet slots on your action bar. Different races start with a different pet but as you grow more experienced you’ll find pet families have different abilities.
Your basic tree is split into 3. Ferocity, Tenacity, and Cunning and under those umbrellas you have various abilities unique to a pet. For example a fully maxed wolf will gain abilities like"bite" and “primal rage” cats gain “claw” and “dash” bears gain tanking abilities or health boosts. Other pets have even more unique abilities.
The pet you should be aiming for is at least one Spirit Beast, they have a unique ability called spirit mend which is used to heal a player you target but ideally you want it macroed so it will heal you, which can be invaluable. If you are speccing survival Exotics are locked out but I usually use a cat or a wolf in survival
Wowheads guide is good for all the different pets
all comes down to what you like realy, but though at same time some pets are better in different situations.
ferocity pets for example is the best for solo play buy a long shot, becuse you have less maintainance on them.
if you go beastmaster hunter a can get spirit beasts, they are harder to find if you want a realy specialy one, theese are realy good in instances to use becuse they you can heal your self whit them, and they can dispel things also.
cunning pets and tenacity pets are fine also, but would say less used than spirit beasts and ferocity pets, but they are usefull for marksman and survival hunters.
You will be able to lvl all the way up to 120 with the wolf, but taming and collecting pets is part of the fun. At max lvl you can have 5 pets in the spellbar and another 50 at the stablemaster.
Spec beastmaster, it’s the best lvling spec and does fine in the modern instances where you have to move around and dps a lot. That gives you access to the exotic beasts later on and I agree spirit beasts is the way to go. They have a small heal that it can control by itself and it will strive to heal you when you drop low all by itself, or heal themself if that’s more needed. It can dispel magic and that is very useful in some situations. Best is to control it yourself via macros. Blizzard is constantly changing how classes and pets work, so make sure the guides you read are fresh.
Petopia has all the info you’ll ever need and there is a dedicated forum too. https*://www.wow-petopia.com/index.php (remove the star)
I’ve played BM Hunters as long as I’ve been playing WoW. A very good source of info on Hunter pet is www.wow-petopia. Personally, I’ve always gone with a cat pet, until I can tame exotics (level 65), then I go get a Devilsaur. There’s a brown one with a couple of minute respawn in Ungoro crater ( Black and white ones on a rare spawn timer wandering around). It all really depends on your personal preference and playstyle. A lot of guides recommend tank pets or spirit beasts ( for the heals), I’ve tried lots of pets but always go back to a devilsaur , they just seem to do more damage. Different ball game if you’re raiding though. devilsaurs are too big! You may need abilities of other pets depending on the encounter mechanics.
My fave soloing pet is a Clefthoof as they receive 20% more healing, have leech and Hero buff and thick hide.
My fave pet is the core hound, it’s been my go to pet since lvl 70 and really haven’t used any other since I got it, all the other pets feel squishy compared to it.
But heard a lot of spirit pets how they’re the best for raiding and I do want to try raiding a bit.
Clefthooves have nice abilities, it’s a pity they are so big. I think they get in the way…
My next best pet atm is the white corehound, it also has mini hero/bloodlust too and molten hide for extra damage. Quite neat and suits a draenei. Might be an alternative.
I use cunning pets when I want to run fast and not need any tanking skills. 10 % extra speed. A small skinny raptor usually.
Macspaw, you see we have different opinions and it’s very much a matter of personal preference.
Spirit beasts are very good for tanking big baddies in the Vale and Uldum, but some extra heal is needed, it’s own heal isn’t sufficient. I have had the corehound and the spirit beast alternating, for now it’s the spirit beast I use most.
Ill be a Hunter and @Owlia could be my pet
