Are we supposed to hate Turalyon?

I admit I do not play retail anymore but I just check in on the story. I quickly skimmed through the book and watched the cinematics.

All I see is a hard working family man trying to protect everyone while the universe continues to crap on him every single day. Alleria comes off as hysterical with mother issues. Arator comes off as an edgy 12 year old emo kid thinking his philosophy is deep.

And now they’re even trying to gaslight the audience that Turalyon avenging Lothar was actually a bad thing… no no… avenging your people you love, rallying your men and killing bad guys is actually a… bad thing to do.

Genuinely, what is up with this writing?

This story is… it just keeps getting worse.

It’s not in the overall thematics of what we’re doing with the Sunwell, it’s in all those little character development moments.

There’s a deep-seated hatred of heroic men in this story, just like the one in TWW.

The characters are also generally flat and lifeless, and most of them are irrational and stupid, too.

I genuinely dislike the writers more than any of the characters in the story - even Xal’atath (because I can’t take her seriously enough).

Well vengeance is nice and etc. But if said vengeance consumes you fully and you go full “nothing else matters” mode?
I agree with Lorthemar’s quote " what’s the point of victory if you lose everything to achieve it?"

They show the moment Turalyon struck down Orgrim as a bad thing because he was taken over by an avenging wrath of the light, and that’s a bad thing somehow.

Also he tried to kill an evil troll, and his son got in the way when he struck him, so he ended up hitting his son. Ofcourse it’s Turalyon’s fault that his dumb edgy son got hit by him.

I’m still having a hard time getting over that whole “The Sons of Lothar are all about peace and tolerance” bit.

I used an ancient Chinese martial art known commonly in the West as “Pattern Recognition” :stuck_out_tongue:

You’d be surprised how often it turns out that people writing these unrealistically petty “This man who is a father is actually really evil” stories stem from some kind of deep-seeded issues that should be resolved with a therapist, rather than projected into a piece of entertainment.
Granted, these people are all probably in therapy already, but likely because they’re having emotional breakdowns seeing people call them crap and that they should be blacklisted from the industry.

In fairness, I’d probably do something similar, if I didn’t have the self-awareness to realize that writing a petty story about something I have issue with makes for a very terrible story.

Last I checked, Orgrim Doomhammer was the Warchief at the time of the Second War, and the Horde and Alliance were at war with one another.
… I too am curious how that is considered bad exactly. To kill the leader of your opposing faction.

Yeah that is legitimately stupid. It sounds like a repeat of the Arathi storyline with Trollbane running infront of Faerun to prevent her from killing an enemy.

“Noooooo, you’re not supposed to kill Ted the cannibal grapefruiter! It’s bad to kill your enemies, when you can actually imprison them and redeem them!”

By this do you mean you didn’t read the book?

The game is rated 12+, so they have characters for everyone. The 12 year olds are no doubt thinking he’s amazing. Especially the emo ones blasting MCR at top volume to annoy their dad.

I’ve only played the first bit (until I could fly) they’ve definitely made him completely unlikeable. I’m mostly alliance and I’m guessing they’re setting him up to die, Arator will get kidnapped (we’ll rescue him in last titan) and Alleria will go mega void nuts and we’ll have to kill her too. Maybe in last titan. We’ll rescue Arator, try to stop her and as she dies she’ll be all tragic.

To be fair, I’m rooting for those two to go and leave liadrin and lor’themar alone!

Dude is a zealot, but completely likeable. He is really human like with deep and mixed emotions. He is not one dimensional like the rest of the “crew“. He was great so far.

Well, he is not a saint, but they are trying to do him like they did Garrosh.

Complex characters that have very serious flaws and are going to a dark place. Unfortunately they lack the maturity in their writting to manage that successfully.

You’re probably right, but this shouldn’t be a “weekend thread”. It’s only a “weekend thread” because Blizzard absolutely cannot tolerate this very piece of VERY valid criticism. They can tolerate all sorts of other ones (though rarely act) but this particular criticism is not permissable.

This is a genuine issue with the game now. The writers have a pathological hatred of old Warcraft and of men especially. It really is beyond the pale at this point. I’ve played about half of the story at this point and it’s outrageous how bad it is.

Every man in the story basically gets compared negatively to a woman, usually a daughter or a sister, and for those that don’t they all behave like they have major emotional insecurities about things that aren’t even their fault, and meanwhile I just spotted 2 old war heroes who loved wandering the wilds and adventuring being cooped up in a cozy inn drinking their life away. (haha old useless drunks haha funny funny)

I’m sorry, those two characters were NOT Chen and Rexxar. Absolutely not. And I don’t care if I just made a spoiler, the story is worthless anyway.

Historically, it’s not an unheard of concept. However, the fact that they keep the original name is totally nuts.

I would have understood, if we had a Questline about how the Sons of Lothar have grown and changed like everything else. And how they are no longer the Sons of Lothar of old, so they rename and start accepting in Orcs and other races. Keeping the name is just horrible story telling IMO.

More that he became a fanatic. Something that was already clear during Legion where he attacked Illidan despite Illidans justified self defense and even Velen saying that Illidan was right in what he did. But they are really really pushing the army of the light fanatism now (something that was only really shown on Draenor with Yrel prior. At least to this extent).

I’m more annoyed about Zul’jan currently. Started great and ended up meh. His sister is just generic slop and I couldn’t care less.

Harandir I flat out ignored the story.

As for the Windrunners: They are all insufferable. The family should have been sidelined long long ago, locked in a cage and the key thrown away instead of being part of the main cast. I rarely hear anybody talk positively about them unless its something else being involved.

Writing and lore was disregarded long ago.

Just think of it as yet another episode of “Mary Sue vs Jane Doe and husband is just in the way. Remove him.”

But never mind Turalyon.

WHAT ABOUT XALAPRAT!! PHWOAARRRRRRR

WHAT A GENIUS!!!

OMG I BEVER KNEW SHE WAS GOING TO DO THAT AT THE END OF TWW!!

OH LOOK! SHE BETRAYED ALLERIA’S TRUST!!

WHAT WILL HAPPEN NOW VIEWERS!!

DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNNN

Thats the standard of the writing team now.

I’ve seen more coherent plots in a Godfrey Ho ninja movie.

She wont die . In this franchise female leads have an immunity card , as not a single one of them has died since … Ever . Hell even most female villains have an escape card . If we exclude razagesh who showed up in 5 cutscenes for 1 patch the last large female character to die was what Onxia ? Synestra ? That was in Cataclysm And frankly Onixia died in Classic .

The last one I truly remember was Vasjz and they brought her back in the shadowlands along with Thralls mother .
Geee I wander where his father went . Probably soul ash or something .

No Allerya will not die . Neither will Liadrin .
For that matter Xal’athat will not die either . I’m sure they will have a redemption story .
Hell , they are already setting up Xal to be “likeable” with the whole but she was just a child you guyyys .

Jaina could have died like 2 times now , she didnt ,
Tyrande , nop
Azshara , floosh in the last second
Yesera , magic card brought to life for no reason

And than Sylvanas who just , whatever reasons … She just stays and that’s final .

More or less that has been going on since I was a child.

Most stuff is like The Simpsons. Homer is a moron but has a job and pays all the bills, Bart is a moron and gets bad grades and causes trouble. Marge (usually) has no job and is much more intelligent than Homer. Lisa is a transcendental genius. Maggie is a baby and is already smarter than Homer.

In Two and a Half Men: Alan’s wife divorces him and keeps the house. Yet he’s a loser because he lives with his brother. Despite having a job and giving all his earnings to his unemployed ex wife, who isn’t a loser.

I thought “alimony” was a contrived plot device for years.

Well, WoW isn’t a sitcom.

That being said, I do wonder why Blizzard seems to have such a seething hatred for the family man type of guy. In Shadowlands there was a quest where you send a man defending his family straight to the maw, because his sin was in his act of protecting his family he didn’t let them flourish and rely on themselves.

Almost like… there’s a bigger picture going on.

Then you realise half of the board of Activision worked for the CIA… :slightly_smiling_face:

If only people were able to actually act like normal human beings and present their arguments in well thought out ways based on actual evidence, facts and logic and not on feelings like hatred, annoyance and bias and then imbue it with egregious hyperbole.

Seriously; some interpretations of ingame events by some posters in this thread really makes me think where people’s heads are at.

Sure, while Wow is not a sitcom everyone who writes for it has likely seen and been influenced by them.

Although I didn’t think Turalyon was portrayed like a loser. He seemed like a raging berserker, which is cool to me.

There’s definitely a bigger picture going on though, and there always has been. Everything influences everything else in some way.
