Bard's and Poet's Corner (Azeroth's Songbook)

As I said in headcanon, I have no talent for writing song, but I like filking so here’s a few I believe can work in Azeroth (with the source for those who don’t have a vocal).

The Tyranny of the Sun
Sing we of rage,
In Tower and field
Of this dying age
That will not yield

Sing we of steel,
Forged in the east
As turns the wheel
And carrion feast

Sing we of empire,
For which we bled
Of flickering fire
Now all but dead

Sing we of foe,
Of victories won
And that first woe
Tyranny of the sun

Sing we of ruin,
As again we tread
West, ever pursuing
Fate writ in dread.

Chant of the Dead
We,
Broken spears,
Shattered shields,
Come to die.

We,
Remnant lost,
Forlorn hope,
Come to die.

We,
Carrion-feeders,
Grave-fillers,
Come to die.

We,
Ruin-children,
Stand ready,
Come to die.

Red the Flowers
Red the flowers, red the crown
Red this day of bleak renown
How soon they forgot Eleanor
Along every oath they swore

Red the flowers, red the wreath
Red the sword that left the sheath
Now a king lies dead on the grass
Taught the vows of princes pass

Red the flowers, red the grave
Red the biers of knights so brave
They who thrice rode and died
Under banners of olden pride

Red the flowers, red the right
Red the fires this day will light
For every slight there is a price
Ours will be long and paid twice.

Temper of Revenge
The story of two Knights, sworn to protect Quel’thalas against the Amani; one murdered in their sleep, and the other going on a quest for revenge despite the orders of their lord.

We were sworn to protect a timeless land,
Our steel pledged to greater goals,
Meant to serve what our lords deemed as good,
Part of a greater hold,

We swore lords of pledge,
With breath and tongue,
A pledge i now break with my heart,
Those beliefs now impede,
What I’m called now to do,
My allegiance is sundered apart,

My soul was torn from me this day,
Half of me lies and turn in his grave,
That shattered life I can never retrieve,
No well meaning wizard can save,

So find me a horse as red as the sun,
Find me a blade that will make their blood run,
I will ride out at dawn while the sun’s in the sky,
So the buzzards can see where the bodies will lie,

Bring me my lance, Bring my shield,
Strong as my sword is the vengeance i weild,
To seek vengeance is wrong, claims my merciful lords,
But vengeance has tempered my sword, vengeance has tempered my sword,

My companion was made to be half of me,
We were sealed with both body and soul,
What is life to a elven alone,
How can one unpartnered be whole,

He was slaughtered at night, not a warrior’s death,
All good seemed so useless and vile,
For good let my fragile world be destroyed,
My oaths by such lies were defiled,

Forgive me my lord for what I do,
Know that this sinner is suffering too,
But your virtue’s pure don’t allow what I plan,
And by Sun I’ll pay killers their due,

So find me a horse as red as the sun,
Find me a blade that will make their blood run,
I will ride out at dawn while the suns in the sky,
So the buzzards can see where the bodies will lie,

Bring me my lance, bring my shield,
Strong as my sword is the vengeance i wield,
To seek vengeance is wrong, claim my masterful lords,
But vengeance has tempered my sword, vengeance has tempered my sword.

Mourning song

I shall not mourn 'til war is done
I shall not weep while blood still runs
I’ll hold my tears when weeping comes
Who shall avenge you darling one?

I shall not mourn 'til war is done
I shall not weep while blood still runs
I’ll hold my tears when weeping comes
And I’ll avenge my darling one

This is a really cool idea! It’s great to see everyone’s songs.

I’m not much cop at songwriting myself but here’s an old 19th century protest song, very lightly adapted, that I think could work for some of the hard times in Stormwind’s recent history. I can imagine the Stonemasons or the poor of Westfall singing it around the fire as the wind howls outside.

You can find a version by Chumbawumba on Youtube from their album English Rebel Songs, but imo their cover is too much like a dirge - I have heard it sung with much more energy and life!

A Song on the Times

You working men of Azeroth, one moment now attend
While I unfold the treatment of the poor upon this land
For nowadays the noble lords have brought the labour low
And daily are contriving plans to prove our overthrow

CHORUS: So arouse you sons of freedom, the world seems upside-down
They scorn the poor man as a thief in country and in town

There’s different parts across the land, it’s true what I do say
There’s hundreds that are starving for they can’t get food today
And if they go unto the rich to ask them for relief
They slam their door all in their face as if they were a thief

CHORUS

Alas how altered are the times, rich men despise the poor
They pay them off without remorse quite scornful at their door
And if a man is out of work, his parish pay is small
Enough to starve himself and wife, his children and all

CHORUS

So to conclude and finish these few verses I have made
I hope to see before too long men for their labour paid
Then we’ll rejoice with heart and voice and banish all our woes
Before we do old Stormwind must pay us what she owes

CHORUS x 2

The Fall of Dalaran

For thousands of years
Magnificence stand
Incredible beauty
Created by hand

Containing such power, wisdom and wit
T’was swept away, bit by bit

Called forth by the prince
They crept from their tomb
With but one purpose
That to bring doom

Storm and thunder
Crackled above
Impending destruction
Unswayed by love

Many a’ brave
Were called to their graves
Only to be defiled
Forced to serve as their knaves

Carefully woven
By this nazrethim band
Archimonde brought
It all with his hand

T’may sound like a tale
But trust me you can
Such was the fall
Of Dalaran

Originating from northern Lordaeron, the song Tam’lin is one of the first recording about a half-breed childs between humans and elves.

  1. I forbid you maidens all
that wear gold in your hair
    To travel to Carterhaugh
    for young Tam’lin is there

  2. None that go by Carterhaugh
but they leave him a pledge
    Either their mantles of green
    or else their maidenheads.

  3. Janet tied her kirtle green
    a bit above her knee
    And she’s gone to Carterhaugh
as fast as go can she.

  4. She’d not pulled a double rose,
    a rose but only two
When up then came young Tam’lin
    says “Lady pull no more”

  5. “And why come you to Carterhaugh
    without command from me”
“I’ll come and go” young Janet said
“And ask no leave of thee”.

  6. Janet tied her kirtle green
    a bit above her knee
And she’s gone to her father
as fast as go can she.

  7. Well up then spoke her father clear
and he spoke meek and mild
"Oh and alas Janet" he said
"I think you go with child."

  8. “Well if that be so” Janet said
    "Myself shall bear the blame
There’s not a knight in all your hall
    shall get the baby’s name.

  9. For if my love were an human knight
as he is an elfin grey
I’d not change my own true love
    for any knight you have."

  10. So Janet tied her kirtle green
    a bit above her knee
    And she’s gone to Carterhaugh
as fast as go can she.

  11. "Oh tell to me Tam’lin" she said
"Why came you here to dwell?"
"The Queen of Elves caught me
when from my horse I fell

  12. And at the end of seven years
she pays a tithe to hell
I so fair and full of flesh
    and fear’ed be myself

  13. But tonight is Summer High
    and the elven folk ride,
Those that would their true love win
at mile’s cross they must hide.

  14. First let pass the horses black
and then let pass the brown
Quickly run to the white steed
    and pull the rider down,

  15. For I’ll ride on the white steed,
    the nearest to the town
For I was a southern knight,
    they give me that renown.

  16. Oh they will turn me in your arms
to a newt or a snake
But hold me tight and fear not,
    I am your baby’s father.

  17. And they will turn me in your arms
    into a lion bold
But hold me tight and fear not
and you will love your child,

  18. And they will turn me in your arms
    into a naked knight
But cloak me in your mantle
and keep me out of sight".

  19. In the middle of the night
    she heard the bridle ring
She heeded what he did say
    and young Tam’lin did win.

  20. Then up spoke the Elven Queen,
    an angry Queen was she
    "Woe betide her ill-farred face,
an ill death may she die

  21. Had I known Tam’lin" she said
    “This night I did see
I’d have looked him in the eyes
and turned him to a tree.”

Bertel’s most recent poem that he recited at the #100th anniversary meeting in Stormwind Poetry Appreciation Society last Friday:

Humming Joyful Down the Road
.

Letting in, letting out
that is what it’s all about
letting go, welcome though
seeds of aspirations, sow

Exchange the old for something new
enjoy the glittering morning dew
reflecting out the rising sun
shun all bad that’s ever done
rays of inspiration pure
make us able to injure
all the strife that life might hold
make us strong and make us bold
every day brings somthing special
each like colored flower petals

Go where no one’s been before
seek all the world it got in store
just for you, and me as well
everything got tales to tell
important lessons too to teach
all within our very reach

Change your viewpoint once a while
for fresh ideas in every style
all the knowledge to compile
different paths for different walks
learn them all and you’ll be taught
how to counter any problem
solve them all and don’t be subtle
every riddle holds an answer
given to the perfect dancer
concept artist of invention
all it takes is your attention

Shout your pride out wide and loud
be assure without a doubt
they who master their own mind
own the world in given time
never too late to discover
all it got for you to offer
give it all you got in store
payment will be even more

Progress’s made by those who dare
imagine more than what’s simply there
need invention’s favorite cousin
deed intention’s premium muffin
forward is the only way
yet still enjoy your every stay
all points on the winding path
improving what we previous had
even road blocks lead us further
even stuff that really hurt us
we are here to overcome
limits for what can be done

Things will just keep getting better
as we strive through stormy weather
perfection is the final goal
Titans’s blueprint in our soul
as their children we are Gods
nothing will defeat us but
our own doubt in what we do
keep that in mind, keep staying true
to the nature of creation
wonder, magic and sensation
we will shape reality
to who we are and who we’ll be
humming joyful down the road
to the fate we’ve been bestowed

Bump-arum.

Kegbelly, do you do poetry in game or as a strictly off screen thing?

If you’re inclined to do so in game and want an avenue, I’d love to have you as a guest speaker once the academy is up and running proper for one or more of our literature and poetry classes. Cross cultural exchange is always a golden thing.

Just something to think about if you wanted to check it out!

It’s more of an off-screen thing, but I have no issue of bringing what I come up with IC as well. Heck, that’s the whole point of this thread. For people to have more material to use in character.

Well once we have the regular avenue I may advertise such here if that’s alright? As it will essentially function as a place to discuss, study and share spoken and written arts.

Oh yes, of course! If there’s anything that involves creativity, songs or poetry you are very welcome to share it here!

A wolf so strong, it’s fangs so red,
Did howl one early morn’
A pack he had, a pack he led,
All others he did scorn

In autumn gloom, in dying light,
The restless shades did cry
With wolven heart, none would take flight
Yet graven chill grew nigh

From spell and fang, a bargain struck,
True rage forever freed
A wolf may howl of strength and luck,
The price; the pack did bleed

This Town was young, the leaves yet green,
No stain yet on the street was seen,
The windows bright, the light shined through
Yet unaware what i’d bump into.
His hair as dark as the night itself,
working the night’s, through by himself.

The world unfair, yet he stood tall,
but compared to horrors he was small
The mad Lich king, his power yet grows,
the way of death for us he chose.
The denizens had now passed away:
And with our lives we had to pay.

The smelter’s cold no fire lit,
His father’s throat next to it slit.
The hammer quiet, the tongs unused,
The whiskey still, noone to boozed.
No harp is wrung, no hammer falls,
The darkness dwells and slowly crawls.
There lies his corpse in blood so deep,
In hope he wakes again from sleep.

Is it based on Lotr Durins song?
Cant help but feel its melody flowing here.

It is yeah, couldn’t get it out of my head to be honest…
So I based pretty much all the Songs of my Bard character on existing songs…

Same as “The Age of Oppression” from Skyrim:

We drink to the Scourge,
for Death and Decay.
For the Age of the Lich King,
is almost at bay.

We’ll drive out the living,
from the land that they’d own.
With the might of the darkness,
They all are Alone.

All hail to Arthas,
You are the Lich King!
In your great name,
we will slay anything.

We’re puppets of power
and formed by your will.
we move by the threads,
no matter whom to kill.

Bertel’s latest poem:

Mind Vent

Nothing really disappears
something stays, remind it’s there
a vague and nagging ominous feeling
waiting like a crashing ceiling
sure you missed some vital point
a supporting ledge you failed to join
every point leads to another
unattached if you don’t bother
useless like a broken watch
missing pegs on each it’s cogs
humping like a flatten tire
getting nowhere, catching fire
make you trip on every wire
weakling, coward, fool and liar

Concealed in fears from hidden tears
stowed away where you can’t reach
in small black boxes you can’t see
building pressure there enclosed
ticking bombs that will explode

So vent your mind for all it’s dread
or someday you might end up dead
burdens aren’t worth storing down
sometimes it’s alright to frown
just when done with grumbling sad
turn your frown back upside down
life is worth it’s bile, be glad
rant is over, that was that
