Battle-pet PvP…
Would be awesome with a Rank/Rating system!
Best in pvp is to be nice ![]()
I can see it now… An endless sea of Anubisath Idols and Mechanical Pandaren Dragonlings
I have teed it up to the relevant time:
I could write…well, not a book, but a very long essay on this. It’s horribly complicated, all the incentives.
Let’s see how oversimplified I can make it:
Q: Can wemake a rating system work?
A: There aren’t enough players to make a rating system work,
Q: So make better rewards to entice players?
A: It would be a hellscape if it did work, because everybody competing for rating would be using the same 5 or 10 overpowered AND EASY-TO-PLAY pets over and over.
Q: So balance the pets for PvP?
A: 1) /faint
2) Change all the identities of 1500 pets people have come to learn over a decade, and the strats they have made? :BIGNOPE:
Q: So make a subset of pets that could be balanced?
A: So what about the existing Family Brawler achievement?
Q: So put rolling limits on subsets that could be selected in a given week?
A: Personally I think this could work, but then you would need two queues, and we still have the Brawler problem.
The thing which put me off of PVP Pet Battles in the early days was the incredibly overpowered Clock Work Gnome.
It was super hard to get and if the other guy had it, you had no chance of winning.
On top of that, there was a BiS combo and I just ended up using the same pets as everyone else (except the Clockwork gnome).
Ofcourse, that was in the early days of Pet Battles, but I learnt my lesson and never participated ever again.
Clockwork Gnome? That must have been very early. Earliest I remember is Idol and Direhorn, and the Idol’s Sandstorm counters the Gnome (and the Idol was nerfed very early, now inexplicably buffed again :incredulous_emoji:
I did a survey of 1000 battles in Warlords, during the Graves meta (without having Graves) and Leo and Rosqo did one in Legion. In both cases, 5 pets made up about 30% of all teams we faced, so essentially you are always facing at least one, usually more, of the 5 or so Meta pets. And then - oh Gawd! - there are the doubles and triples. Triple Bone Serpent, back in its day. Triple Anomalus. Triple Idol. ![]()
One thing you would get 100% agreement on from PvP pet battlers - and they’re generally not a very agreeing breed - would be to forbid using two of the same species in a team. Or even two of the same ability, spread across a team. No Double Darkness.
Pet battles are just ignored content sadly. They buffed weather abilities inexplicably and have not bothered to fix it.
To be fair i got all pet achivs in game + all pets at lvl 25, ofc i still need some expensive tcg for like 300 euro but i get em later ![]()
To be fair, Pet battles are far from ignored. The devs support pet battles pretty well. 200+ new pets, 16 regular WQ, Family achieves, and so on in Shadowlands.
Pet PvP is ignored. They have no satisfactory fix for it. But the actual number of people who genuinely like PvP is small - the World AGM of PvP Pet Battlers could be held in an old VW Beetle.
I truly have no idea what they were thinking with that. Neither does anybody else. Or changing Flurry (WHYYYYYY???) Or even the complicated mess of Shattered Defenses that did nothing for what they were targeting, but nerfed pets that shouldn’t have been nerfed. I have no explanation for any of these crazy, deranged decisions. It’s as if they fell into The Politicians’ Syllogism:
We Must Do Something!
This is Something
Therefore, we must do This.
Apparently, it afflicts devs as well as politiciane. ![]()
I think I tried Pet PvP once, it was awful. Never touched it again.
Even Blizz adding a load of incentives with achievements could not tempt me, weekly quests etc. Nothing.
I am indifferent to them adding a rating system to this. I have zero intention of ever taking part.
Yes, we’re talking when Pet Battles was first introduced in Mists.
Something I found really fun at the time, and I went around and collected every pet to get the Zoo Keeper title. Unfortunately, there was one that was Summer only, and I couldn’t play during Summer due to my work taking me abroad. So I only managed to finish that achievement in 2018.
But, yeh, the PVP aspect kill it for me. The CWGnome was just too OP.
I have never really gotten back into it. Not until last week when I decided I would earn enough Polished Tokens for the Flawless Amethyst Baubleworm. Im at about 2000 tokens so far earning about 300 a day (or more).
Yes, it’s the meta of having certain pets which kind of kills it. What has put me off of doing the Pet Dungeons, and even the Pet Dailies, was when I looked at WoWhead the descriptions would say, You need these 3 pets or fail. And I’m like Really, I have to level 3 particular pets that I don’t have.
But after finding out yesterday that I can do WQ’s with level 1 pets and the enemy one scales down, just changes everything. How I didn’t know that… ![]()
It can be fun. It could be fun. But facing the same small set of opponents all the time kills it.
First, don’t look at Wowhead. Look at Xu-Fu’s. Lots of strats, many by experienced setters, with comments and ratings. https://www.wow-petguide.com/Section/70/World_Quests
Next, you can complete all SL WQs with just the same three Blue 25 pets (though one or two will go better with a couple of extra ones.) I did that for all BfA battles, and Rosqo did it for all SL battles, e.g. https://www.wow-petguide.com/Strategy/11746/Micro_Defense_Force
And BTW, use Rematch addon if you don’t already. It recalls your teams automatically when you mouseover the tamer.

While we at it we need a scooter song ![]()
Thats a useful tip. I have 2 out of 3 of those pets, but both level 1.
But now I have found out you can use level 1 pets for the WQ’s, I can’t seen any reason to level up pets and make it harder for myself ![]()
I’ll check this out.
I remember my friend trying to do the weekly and just getting wiped out by one player repeatedly. That was an expansion or so ago, I have no idea if it’s still like that.
It is. To be fair, the Beginner Problem, as you might call it, is solvable.
That’s what my experience has been. You end up meeting a player with the Meta pets, and if you don’t have the Meta pets, then you don’t stand a chance.
Actually, I think this was one of the reasons I took a long break from WoW during MoP. I remember thinking at the time, that I was fed up with needing to use recommended settings all the time, Pets for Battles, and Talents for dungeons, raids, PVP etc.
Yeah that’s what I ment, sorry.
