Leather, plate etc. Is there a difference other than the cosmetic aspect?

Well not all classes can wear all types, but those who can should still preferably wear what is most suitable, which is usually Plate wearers who can wear all types of gear, but still highly suggested to wear Plate. No clue why they can really, easter egg?
