Feudal warfare, house guilds, and you

This concept would have to be pretty heavily shoe-horned as 1) There is a king of Gilneas, so even from an imaginary RP perspective this would feel weird, it’d essentially be a bunch of “pretender houses” fighting for ruined buildings and plagued pits!

I also don’t think a House Guild has to do as you describe, it really depends on what the goals of the people within it are. Lots of people just “stand around Stormwind doing nothing” I don’t think it’s exclusive to House Guilds.

I think a lot of the problem is people think power in RP actually means anything, and they RP the power more than the character. “Noble” should essentially be a trait, like “Solider” etc. It is essentially supposed to be a fundamental personality trait / defines to an extent the upbringing of the character. Personally I find the “I can buy myself out of any situation” thing boring.

Also, an absolute monarchy doesn’t mean the nobles have “No power” , They’re still nobility and have wealth / land / connections and possibly some role in the kingdoms affairs, obviously though the King reserves the right to pretty much overrule anything etc.

So does the Blizzard writing team, because WoW isn’t a grimdark low-fantasy game that you RP it as. This game has little green people that speak in a new jersey accent… deal with it

Yeah that’s the point. I like that.
Also the king is away in Stormwind so I don’t think he can effectively rule Gilneas right now.

Just because the game has something does not mean it can’t have something else. I like goblins.

There are dozens of (mostly nameless) Noble NPCs through out Kul Tiras to the point they have their own city district in Boralus, Upton Borough, in the upper tier around the Proudmoore Keep. House Norwington is another prominent noble family in Tiragarde Sound - they’re the dudes who breed the finest horses in all of Kul Tiras, lead by Lord Aldrius Norwington.

It’s more likely that each of the 4 major houses act as Lord Paramounts / Overlords / word of your choice of their respective region and the local nobility are all vassals one way or another to Waycrests, Stormsongs and Proudmoores - with Tiragarde previously being split between Ashvane and Proudmoores, and Ashvane being stated to have a lot of sway over the trade and industry while Proudmoores lead the Admiralty and controlled the Navy and Guard. I headcanon that Ashvane’s assets were absorbed in a mad rush by rival nobles after their treason was exposed, and Proudmoores reign as the top dogs in the Sound.

If we take Stormwind as an example, per Shadow of the Horde :nerd: even Stormwind nobles have their private armies. While Stormwind does have a volunteer army that’s supplemented by conscripts during man shortage, in Shadow of the Horde we saw that nobles often supplement Stormwind’s army with their own men in exchange for command over a specific theatre of war.

Lord Bolten Vanyst, one of the more powerful nobles in the Kingdom to the point his estate in Elwynn is described as being akin to a realm unto itself, had some level of command over the Jade Forest theatre because he volunteered his own men to the war effort to get away from his scheming wife.

Kul Tiran nobles do have their private men, and Lord Norwington’s wife implies that even she served the Admiralty once upon a time as a Captain, so it’s more likely that in times of great need (like BFA) the Admiralty takes command over their respective forces in defense of the nation but otherwise default to provincial guards. After all, the Proudmoores aren’t absolute monarchs - the nation is ruled by a council of the main houses which is headed by the hereditary Lord-Admiral, and that title belongs to House Proudmoore. The Navy works hand in hand with the Tidesages under Stormsong’s rule.

Kul Tiras is really just an Aristocracy LARPing as a naval junta

Yes, that’s the point I was making, a constant whine of his is “people RP WoW with a modern mindset” and it’s fundamentally flawed. However WoW is by definition not a Low Fantasy setting.

Also this seems like the most logical thing. There is also Lord Kennings as a named noble NPC.

Oh boy. Those guys. During my time in Wolves Silhouette (Yes, I was one of them) I had rather, aggressive feelings from them. Might has been just Venom but others were affected by it too. I am not saying that it had a rotten apple in the tree, I would not say the tree is rotten. Except it was. I did nothing wrong, other than just be in the guild everybody (Some or most) hated.

Good find!

WoW definitely focuses more on the “eccentric noble” character type, then the actual like deep politics etc. behind how they’re linked to the Kingdom / Admiralty.

An unfortunate truth, yes. Helping an eccentric noble on his hunts makes for a more engaging quest experience for the average player than a deep dive into the politics and life of running a kingdom, but the latter is more important for world building.

Role players do find a way to fill gaps though. One of my personal headcanons since I do RP a Kul Tiran noble character is that the Drustvar nobility’s descended from the original Inquisitors and Generals of Lord Arom Waycrest during the Drust Wars, with his inner circle and officers becoming the vassal lords when he became the ruler of Drustvar.

One way or another, Drustvar-born nobles trace their lineage to one of the original Inquisitors and Generals of the colonial Drust War era.

Yeah, basically these 4 noble houses serve as the Wardens in Game of Thrones.

Pretty much!

That’s the main tripping point for people, they like the implied power “Noble” brings and roleplay that, without the other criteria. Being a nobleman is more than just being fancy and rich with a stick stuck up the cuckoos nest.
There’s the concept of Noblesse oblige basically “power entails responsibility”. If you want to be a noble, one must act in a noble manner to their peers, betters and inferiors.
Which means… no weird remarks about “first night”, no shanking peasants for sport, no holy ghosts aggravating maidens at night, no tying elven prisoners to trees for nefarious purposes, no visible connection to forces of disorder i.e rioters/stonemasons/defias brotherhood, and the most obvious one - don’t speak like a yob with an incomprehensible accent (that amounts to just cutting random letters off words)

You should be charitable, honourable, chivalrous, ready to defend your land and peoples and from a player perspective, know how to socialise with people properly.

Horsegate? What’s that?

Believe me, you do not want to know.

Lets just say, it involves human, horse and well…love

It involved some northern/noble guilds, a horse, someone of questionably dubious age and the collapse of at least two guilds, all because someone couldn’t keep their odd fetishes to themselves.

Least to say, we were all riding it out at the time.
