FOMO and Fun

Right, so I just want to ask the community for some advice or opinions on what i should do,

I enjoy playing classic era, I also enjoy playing SoD, and retail, however as someone with a pretty normal level of adult responsibilities, I find it can be difficult to enjoy each version of this game to the fullest and often fall behind with certain patches.

I often see streamers playing each and every versions with max characters, going into the newest content straight away with the best gear and what seems like all the time in the world to play.

So, i was wondering is there anyone who has a similar situation to me and what is their way of dealing with it, ive tried to just main one version but then something comes out like a patch or an expansion and i get massive FOMO, so, yeah any advice?

I can relate! I play SoD and Retail, have lots of alts, also like to put som time into other games like Diablo 3/4.
When I play, I am very inefficient, and put a lot of time into collecting transmog, pet battling, dabbling in professions, and general lollygagging. I don’t have a single max character, and am always lagging behind on expansions. I haven’t even done all areas in Shadowlands yet. I’m still building on my Garrison. End game? That is some mysterious creature that I have never seen. But I’m playing the way I love. I have characters playing in all expansions!
I could never play a single “Main”, or do the kind of expansion race that many seem to do, and always being up to date with the latest of everything. But I don’t care about that at all. Instead, I feel it’s wonderful that there is always so much left for me to do. There is always something I have never seen or done before, even in some of the old expansions. This suits me very well.
I guess however, that this playstyle could be a bit of a hindrance if you wanted to do the latest dungeons, and heroics and all that. I don’t do much of that, so it doesn’t really matter much what kind of gear I have. I mostly solo old dungeons, to experience them and collect transmog.
It also depends on how competitive you wish to be, and if it’s important to do the hardest group content. If so, you might need to focus more on one single Main and try to keep them up to speed. Otherwise, just do what you find fun, and forget about FOMO, that will only cause you stress.

You just have to accept that you are never going to collect everything, you are never going to have the best gear. When you accept this, you will enjoy the game a lot more or in my case, I plateaud from the gear I can obtain, so only log in occasionally to run some old contet.

Nobody cares what gear you have or what mounts or achievements you own. Once you realise that the better it will be.

Do you have to play the game to it’s fullest, would it make you any happier?

Swap watching steamers with more game play. will help.

Playing WoW Retail myself, FF14 with family, Genshin Impact myself and other Co-Op Games like Deep Rock Galactic and V Rising with family, and “all the other” games I play for myself, like Horizon Zero Dawn, which I still haven’t finnished and games on Nintendo consoles with WoW from all of them having the highest priority for me, followed by FF14, with “adult responsibilities” like you, I can only strongly advise you to priorize your games.
You and I, and all the otheres here and everywhere, we simply are no streamers who’s job it is to do what we do in our free time.
You will never be able to accomplish the same amount of “completionism”, or however one wants to call it. It sucks, it sucks really badly, I know, but to keep having fun at games you will need to prioritize.
Otherwise you will be just overwhelmed and exhausted from doing what is supposed to making you have fun (“supposed to making you have fun”…that…looks and sounds…wrong… :dracthyr_hehe_animated: ). And you will have a very hard time getting out of that hole again once you’ve dropped there.
There are so many events in Genshin and due to that they overlap with WoW and FF14 events, and DRG has events, too, and family would like to complete FF14 and DRG events, so I either have time and energy to rush through Genshin or I bin them.
Now, for example, FF14 has this Mogry Tomb Stone farming event, which takes ages, plus WoWs 20th anniversay which I enjoy and take my sweet time ingame doing all I can, which then takes a long time, too.
I am prioritizing WoW over FF14, although I would really, really like more of the rewards you can buy with those tomb stones than I am willing to spend time farming.
This is just simply the sad reality of us “regular” people not having the same amount of time streamers have.
But, if I could choose between becoming a known and therefore wealthy streamer and having to work at my work with the limited free time I have, I would still choose the situation I am in now, solely to the fact that you can drop into depression and social/mental exhaustion really fast being an online influencer.

Long story short: Prioritize your gaming before you get too exhausted from pushing yourself too hard trying to do too much at a time and loosing the fun in gaming due to that.

In terms on games I only play a hand full off games occasionally/rarely and just playing wow sod for a nostalgia hit (returning players back for a few months after many years away) so I’m not such of a “gamer” tbh

Maybe try and find a hobby that’s not so FOMO driven / chilled out /non gaming. Miniture painting is fun hobby /good for kids if they are “arty”.

I guess you could argue in this capitalist driven world any hobby has FOMO to some extent even if minor

Like golf clubs, there’s new ones out every year, new technology, new materials, new shape, made by aliens from the future…yeah…they are the same as last year, does the same old thing, hits a little ball…same distance as your last clubs, they are just new and shiny and maybe a cool new color /gasp

I have a built in racial ability that makes me suspicious of anything/anyone trying to sell me something.

That sweet little kid selling candy for charity /suspicous :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I just play the game without worrying about the gear .i just do the keys that i get at the end of the mythic dungeon and if it bricks i try it again with a different group .i also do pvp with solo queue arena and blitz bg for a change .as long as you dont let the game dictate you ,you will have fun .

Just try to see what fun means to you .dont care what others are doing or what they have . Comparing yourself to others will only bring despair and depression.

Also as other poster said stop looking at streamers . It is like watching a youtube video about richest person in the world and then trying to feel good about your own life

You should know established streamers make a living streaming so can afford playing 24/7…

I personally have zero interest with other versions of WoW to get attached to nor do I have the time to do so…

You can think different. I am still looking for a girlfriend. You should be more happy with your real life tasks then some virtual items.

Imagine dont have your real life tasks and you sitting there all day playing games and have everything.

There is so much stuff in game that youcan’t collect it all even if you spent 12 hours a day, 365 days a year, trying to.

And why would you want to anyhow? Most mounts are either a recolour of something else or just meh in any case.
Similar with mogs. How many items in your wardrobe will you ever actually use? Probably a tiny percentage.

The Trading Post is a good example of how to treat this. You get 1000 Tender each month and the value of everything in there is 5,000 or more. So you have to be selective in what you get.
Pick the things that are unique or stand out. Something you might actually use.

I don’t try to fill the Trading Post log in a day. I just play the game doing the things I want to do. Usually this fills it up anyhow. But sometimes I need to find some activities I don’t normally do to fill it.
When it comes to this Anniversary Event, I’m not farming the prizes. I’m playing the game. Mid December I’ll see how many I have and I’ll buy a toy or pet or mount or whatever I can afford. I’m not playing the FOMO game.
With FOMO, you aren’t playing the game - the game is playing you.

Thanks everyone for your input, it’s actually made me come to a decision that im going to make smaller goals for example my SoD character i never got round to getting it to max its only lvl 51, so i might start by getting that max level and then once ill do that ill see where the game takes me

Just play whatever you find fun, that’s what it’s all about. I focused on different areas in retail, dungeons / delves / professions etc, when it got old I stopped doing it. Then started a new character and levelled in a chromie time for an expansion I had not played before, and set myself the rule to level questing and only use ground mount. Enjoyed that a lot, until something else came along. Currently unsubbed as there’s other stuff that’s more fun. Might return, might not. Chill and have fun, the real life grind can be pretty intense, avoid the rat race in game.

Do what you like.

I returned in S3 of Dragonflight and did a lot of old content I missed.

With the start of TWW I decided to mainly farm gold gathering before the mats prices plummeted.
And now I’m gonna do the main content.

There’s no Fomo.

Good luck with your new decision but the last I heard, to get into the latest raid, you need certain gear etc, so getting max level still wont make you get into that content and you’ll miss out unless you put the work in.

Oddly enough, I was playing with a friend yesterday (Retail) and that rare mount dropped from a Timewalking boss. Usually I’d be pleased, learn it and never end up using it as I have my main mounts and I don’t rotate away from them. So, knowing they love collecting mounts, I just give it to them and that brought me more joy.

The same with gear too, I grinded Plunderstorm for all the transmogs as I had FOMO, yet, I never use anything I got from that. Also the same with MoP Remix, I collected pretty much everything from the vendors and I never use any of it. I guess my point is that FOMO is a state of mind. When you think you’ll miss out on something, think a little bit more about what you’re actually missing out on and is it something you really want to do/get.

I got the Headless Horseman mount recently only because the dungeon takes about 3mins to complete and I only do it on one character too, if it took more effort then I wouldn’t have bothered because as you could probably guess by now, I’d never use it.

There will always be too much stuff to do than time you are able to devote to it. Unless you have very limited goals.

As it is every tier since the game started.

Yes i agree. Wow is a game to play your own way, you might have a few leetists freinds who always get the best gear etc.
Or one that collects all the rare mounts or one that has high arena rating.

Then theres you who has maybe some or none of the above.

Best advice is play your game your own way its only a competition if you compete :))

Just enjoy your experiances and focus on what makes you happy in game.

Peace out.
