Hi i’m levelling one of every class like I try to do every expac and I am levelling my frost mage why is the damage so bad?
Frostbolt may as well just be a cosmetic spell and does npc damage and literally everything I do is just to get icicles for glacial spike. Is this seriously how the devs have designed frost mages? I mean this is must be a literal joke spec right?
Any veteran frost or just general mage players that main a mage know what I am doing wrong? Because seriously I can kill 20-30 times the mobs at triple the speed on literally every other class but mage.
Frostbolt isn’t used much levelling. You have frozen orb, comet storm, ray of frost. Mainly just shatter ice lances with freeze abilities and your fine
Most classes do not have problems levelling, the closest to being bad i would say is shadow priest because of the ramp up time, any class that has that kind of ramp up is not very good for levelling, frost doesn’t have that problem.
Doesn’t mean it’s a perfect spec, i much preferred nh frost mage, but it’s not bad.
Frost, thanks to it’s insane slows, good damage, insane proc chance with big pulls, is actually one of the best for leveling.
Also i personally do not use glacial spike, it’s just not very good in my opinion for gameplay.
That is why I play Fire Mage, Any one that has played Frost Mage over the years will notice how lame frostbold and many other spells have become. Fire Mage currently gives me the rotation I want. I have not idea what the thinking was with BFA class design. A lot of class are just plain boring! MM and BM hunters are just boring to me compared to what they had in Legion. Frost Mages if you think way back we had alter time we could trigger ice lance crits with our pet freeze etc. AND deep freeze would take away at least halve a targets health. Now its just like peeling potatoes? My destro Warlock is utterly boring compared to Legion!
As with each expansion they take away spells and talents we loved and normally they give us something back in return but I don’t see that with BFA?? My sub runs out in 6 days and I have 0 motivation to renew as I think it is better to put everything on ice till things are improved but I don’t have any hopes as it seems the Devs just don’t care and do what they want regardless of players telling them otherwise.
For all classes dps drops like a stone at 115… Frostmage, furywarrior, shadowpriest and feral druid is the worst. Gear that drops with quests and in dungeons arent really good compared with what you got at 110 and common for all new drops is lack of haste. Developers hates us.
I mean I’m no pro and I don’t know how my dps would be on other classes as mage is the only class I’ve done more than dabble with this xpac. Also I don’t remember how it was levelling, but what I can say is that I’m reasonably happy with my dps in m+, sometimes. Actually the ones I do better in are the ones with larger numbers of bigger mobs. In Motherlode for example, my dps seems to compete fairly well with others.
I just use the rotation on Icy Veins (apparently it’s not necessarily the best rotation and you should read the Altered Time discord to keep up to date with the best rotations), but anyway with 3+ targets I’m going something like Icy veins, Frozen Orb (using Frost Nova, Cone of Cold and Pet Freeze to keep the mobs near the orb if necessary), Ice Lance whenever I get a Finger of Frost proc (you should also use Ice Lance whenever FoF procs outside of Frozen Orb, unless maybe you want to hold it for an upcoming point where you are going to need to move). Outside of this, with 2+ targets always keep Blizzard up so as to do AoE dmg and reduce the cd on Orb. Use Ebonbolt and shatter it with Flurry if you have 2 or less Icicles. If you have 3 or more save it for when you have 5 so you can Shatter a Glacial Spike.
Then it’s Frostbolt spam and if you get a Brain Freeze proc, again, use it to Shatter a Frostbolt if you’re at 2 or less Icicles, or save it for shattering a Glacial Spike if you’re at 3 or more. Frostbolt is not intended to be a spell you use to do damage. It’s a spell you use to get the Brain Freeze procs that you can then use to Shatter Frostbolts and Glacial Spikes which is where the damage comes from.
I find it important to have Weak Auras set up, especially for Blizzard actually, as it comes off cd quickly and needs to be kept up in m+ where there are often more 2 or more targets at any one time.
All this said though, I really don’t know how Frost mage compares to other classes right now.
Drop pet, get lonely winter, get 3x flash freeze, stack mastery, focus on glacial as your primary dmg ability, the rest is just filler, except orb maybe.
Learn dungeons to the extent that you can use veins and azerite guardian on regular intervals when they’re off cd and have them off cd for boss fights.
Frostbolt has hit like a wet lettuce for a long time now.
It’s just a filler spell when you’re not lancing or flurrying.
I’m quite happy with the damage output of the Frost Mage, plus they have an amazing ability to kite. Play it right and you can do some massive burst while the enemy can’t can’t get anywhere near you.
The power drop off at level 115 hurts like hell. For levelling Try using comet storm with frost nova to shatter and that does a lot of damage. Also take shimmer and ray of frost so you can keep your enemies far from you.
Ebonbolt can help with the flurries and if all fails take mirror image as they will distract enemies if you are in a sticky spot and need to escape.
Frost is trash. IMHO. You live and die on procs from your frostbolt, meaning - without haste, every mob is a roulette. You “Raw” dps is lowest among all classes, so Maybe you will get 2 procs in row and kill mob flawlessly, or maybe you will stuck for something like 40 sec, desperately spamming frostbolt. For leveling Arcane>fire>frost. Arcane has huge dps, majority of mobs will be dead in 3 cast with 4 AP. Fire is fun, but needs haste and crit, and have, probably, the most useless mastery in the game. Which, probably, could come on top of all other specs only in verryyy late game, in mythic/raid dungeons.
You realise you replied to me here rather than the OP? I mean I guess the OP is still notified, but yeah just thought I’d say since I’m not sure if you actually meant to direct this reply towards me.
