There is a pretty simple answer.
The cheaper one is newer. Older materials are not gathered as much. They’re therefor rarer.
9k is just someone being silly though.
It’s the same with drums I think, older expansion ones are way more expensive or cheaper, one of the two.
I corrected it to say newer, just a type fix there.
But that is why. It doesn’t matter if the item is useful or not.
It’s like collectibles or antiques. An antique car from 1960 would be far more expensive than some car from 2010, even if the car from 2010 is ultimately superior.
It is not only with gems. It is that for older items (gems, enchants) there is no longer market for and so the price is not competitive any longer. People who list those old gems, they list just in hope that maybe someone with twink char buys it and so other don’t bother figuring out real price and just follow the price.
ye thousands for a gem is silly, regardless how old it is.
old materials are quite expensive though. If you want to cap your professions in all brackets you will spend a CRAP TON of gold on AH.
It actually is profitable to fly around Outland and Northrend to mine stuff. These zones are not overran by multiboxers and a single piece of cobalt or fel iron ore could sell for like 30g on high pop realm. And those are raw mats, they always sell. Sometimes an auction will expire but this is not transmog (that needs to be relisted over and over).
Because twinks need gems too? I agree the price is absurd but practically no one is buying or selling so basically hoping the next buyer will be desperate enough to buy it.
Nobody is going to be selling those for less than 1000 I believe. You need to buy/gather old materials and craft them. You also won’t be selling quantities so don’t expect people selling the one gem they manage to sell per week for cheap.
