Hypocracy by the nightelves, does anyone feel the same way?

Something about the lore of the Night Elves and Blood Elves has always felt a bit contradictory to me.

Night Elves often criticize the Sunwell and argue that such a powerful arcane source is dangerous and could threaten the world. From their perspective that makes sense because the original Well of Eternity played a huge role in attracting the Burning Legion and triggering the War of the Ancients. The trauma from that event shaped their entire culture and their distrust of large concentrations of arcane magic.

But when you look at it from another angle the argument starts to feel inconsistent.

The Sunwell is treated as this massive risk that should potentially be shut down, yet the Emerald Dream continues to exist and has caused repeated disasters throughout history. The Dream has been corrupted multiple times, the Emerald Nightmare nearly consumed parts of Azeroth, and threats coming from the Dream have appeared again and again. If we were simply counting the number of times a magical realm posed a threat to the world, the Emerald Dream would probably rank higher than the Sunwell.

Yet the Night Elves never argue that the Emerald Dream should be sealed away or destroyed. Instead they dedicate entire orders of druids to protecting and maintaining it.

The difference seems less about actual risk and more about ideology. To the Night Elves arcane magic represents the arrogance that nearly destroyed their civilization, while nature magic represents balance and the natural order of the world. Because of that they view the Emerald Dream as something sacred that must be protected, while they view the Sunwell as a dangerous reminder of the past.

From a lore perspective this actually makes the conflict between Night Elves and Blood Elves more interesting. It is not purely about what is objectively safer for the world. It is about history, trauma, and two cultures that chose very different paths after the same catastrophe.

Still, when you look at the number of crises tied to the Emerald Dream, you can understand why Blood Elves might raise an eyebrow when Night Elves start lecturing them about the dangers of magical wells.

Dude you don’t know the half of it, let’s compare notes aye?

-Sin’dorei-

Lost Sunwell to Scourge, and now to the Void, twice, I do not count the OC Horde assault as it was laughable, they couldn’t even pass the barrier.

Sunwell in turn empowers the land (much like the 2nd Well of Eternity as they are made from the same waters) and sustains the sin’dorei.

That’s it.

Now let’s look at:

-Kaldorei-

Created VARIOUS great trees without permission of the archdruid, one of which led to the creation of the Emerald Nightmare, which almost destroyed the world twice.

Their world trees keep getting corrupted.

Their second Well of Eternity much like Sunwell was also attacked twice, once by Archimonde (warcraft 3), and once during the Legion expansion.

Whenever they try to terraform a region to make it more lush they bring down issues, like the literal War of the Shifting Sands.

And lastly, THEY STILL HAVE THEIR WELL OF ETERNITY, which they used to create the Moonwells.

Also their Well of Eternity is what keeps them as kaldorei, original highborne devolved into high elves due to being cut off from the 2nd Well of Eternity as stated by the lore:

“n 7,300 BDP, after they refused to not meddle with arcane magic, Dath’Ramer Sunstrider and his Highborne were barred from setting foot on Hyjal ever again. Exiled and cut off from the Well of Eternity’s energies, the Highborne began to feel the effects of aging and disease; their skin had even lost its violet hue while they shrank in stature.”

So it is so DUMB for maieve in the questline to go: BUT THEY KEEP INSISTING ON HAVING A FONT OF POWER. Ge I wonder why x’D

Also unlike Shal’dorei, Sin’dorei are still afflicted with magic addiction Sunwell wasn’t a cure, it merely kept them sated.

Long Story , short …
All magic is evil !
I mean look at all the world ending catastrophes it’s use brought in the span of what 20 years ?

We need a group ( maybe a whole country/player faction ! ) of purists that want to purge all magic from the world and seal it away . They can use cool weapons and technology that is tailored to fight magic and seal it , with classes like tinkers , spell breakers and medicine man.

I’d imagine such a group would garner huge support , as average Joe from Westfall has had his life ruined multiple times by magic nonsense that he CANT USE in the first place , while he and his children are constantly called to serve on the front line as human fodder , verses huge fire-breathing dragons or demons .

I’d say it could make for a nice plot there .

Not to defend the Night Elves, but timetables should be taken into account here. The known threats since the great sundering were the Legion and the Old Gods, and the Legion as (not incorrectly) assumed to be drawn by arcane magic. There was no threat from the Nightmare until WoW invented it some 20 years ago. So was their rejection of the arcane above other magics proven wrong? Sure, but not until recently. And as much as I dislike how quickly it went, the Night Elf lore actually didn’t let them remain hypocrites on that, but instead made them welcome Night Elf mages back into their fold, and embrace an Alliance that was quite heavily into the use of arcane magic. They seem improbably reasonable in that, if you ask me. I’d really have liked them to have doubled down irrationally, since 10k years of tradition shouldn’t be so easy to discard without reserve, but that’s just not how it went.

The Blood Elves seem to be the ones that are holding the grudge for their ancient banishment.

Because of the big trees ,the ignorant haranir exist.

I’ve seen the trees mess up the world more than the Sunwell ever did. Not counting the Well of Eternity, most of other wells have done is superficial (word intended) damage.

Meanwhile, the trees with their roots, have really done come close to doing irreversible damage to the world soul itself. Least when the Sunwell got corrupted the first time, it just blew up, but it didn’t threatened the world soul directly.

I hate this direction it’s taking, that we won’t have a Sunwell anymore, and I really liked that identity to be related to the Blood Elves. It’s like saying “lets remove all trees from the kaldorei” even when we know it causes problems.

Yeah this stuff causes conflict.

But it’s entertaining conflict, don’t turn races into the Neutral Planet from Futurama where their existence “does not put the planet in jeopardy one way or another”

It’s boring then.
