In-Game Combat Log Range Decreased

And even if it was in Vanilla, Addons are much more mainstream today, and used by a lot more players than would have used them back in Vanilla. So its more game breaking today than it was 15 years ago

I know that was the biggest argument against it, but I’ve had many people say there was an addon exactly the same when they’re arguing for it

I agree with everything you say !

Funny thing they just made spy more accurate and more functional with combat log changes

To be fair, I did hear the argument that Spy was always around in Vanilla in a state similar to how it was yesterday (of course without proof)

Then again I never saw proof of the contrary, although someone once said it was created in 2009 but I don’t know the accuracy of that (I never knew about it until classic launch lol)

I think Spy itself (or at least the name) is from around 2009. But other addons (Paranoia, VanaKoS, etc) did the same thing.
The difference is that they were working on Vanilla combat logs, and apparently Classic combat logs are way more detailed.
So yeah, with this change Spy should be pretty much exactly like similar addons were in Vanilla.

Sure.

Aah thanks, well someone linked the reddit post before saying that it is broken now, and I think it’s true I didn’t notice it, the only time Spy has grabbed someone is when they’ve come within 50 yards of my view distance so seems to be better

fine by me, if it becomes the meta then it’s up to the community to sort it out, not blizzard

knowing how much more lenient the vanilla API was, i suspect it would be more limited than e.g paranoia

I was using a separate combat log window at the beginning of vanilla. If i remember right, like 6 months after release Paranoia (or other one forgot its name) was created. It had a big visual warning in the middle of screen without a sound and targeting option.

do you find ‘50 yds max’ to be reasonably close to what you remember

I watched dozens if not hundrets of vanilla pvp videos over the years, i have never seen anyone using and addon even remotely with the functionality spy had.
Also, over 5 years of vanilla private server play I have never heard of an addon with that functionality either. This would have been wildly populat on nost and other mega private servers.

This means that if noone can proof the existence of such an addon back in the days, we have to assume it did not exist.

I lean towards ‘no way did something like that exist’ too, but proof either way would be nice and put our minds at rest

On the contrary, the only thing I don’t like about spy is that it doesn’t give you an instantly clear picture as to where the enemy is…

If anything, I believe that this is a buff to the addon as now you just need to run around and as soon as you hear that ding… It’s go time (for those inclined)

For me the add-on is more to help watch my back so I welcome the change.

I was cruising through Arathi last night on my mage and was jumped by high level mounted horde on 3 occasions. Wondered each time why I hadn’t known they were there sooner but this explains it :joy::ok_hand:

I used an addon like Spy in vanilla, can’t for the life of me recall the name ( something along the line of enemy radar/alerter/spy )

Thats the reason I found spy because I was looking for replacements for my old addons - found replacement for most of them, the one I miss the most was the custom target frames tho. ( think focus frame, etc )

There was no focus target in Vanilla I don’t think. Are you sure you are not remembering some other expansion?

There were several, none provided by blizzard;
most of the old addons have vanished from the web though, but you can still find various recreations/refinements that work on the 1.12 client with very little google fu.

https://github.com/wardz/FocusFrame

It no longer works because several of the API calls are limited in the 1.13 client.

Yeah that seems legit.

Personally I’m not that concerned with what addons were made or were popular. What interests me is what was possible, and I am sure that something like Spy was possible. That doesn’t mean that it could have had the same functionality as the Classic version did before this change, and it seems likely that it couldn’t.

No the classic client did send a lot more combat data than at any point in vanilla, so to me at least this is a welcome change.

If a rogue is going to stealth up to me from behind they should get to surprise me and not be betrayed by buffs.
Conversely if the stealth within 50y or me/uses sprint/apply poisons in stealth/etc they have betrayed them selves.

I honestly dont think anyone has a problem with this change, except for a few trolls with notting better to do

But no one points its name.

Not exactly reading closely, are you?
