Is the Shadow Priest dead?

My favorite class, with interesting mechanics and visuals, is now simply at the bottom of the game. It was never in the meta, but now it’s been completely demoted. It’s destroyed for M+, no one wants to include it in groups… It’s a real shame. Its damage and utility have been significantly reduced with this change: Soul Link now causes direct-cast spells to deal 20% of their damage to other targets with Vampiric Touch (previously 60%). Priests, what do you think about this and how do you feel about the game now?:smiling_face_with_tear:

Can I maybe rock the boat here a bit? Everything wrong with Shadow Priest is directly due to the good ppl at Blizz mistakenly listening, and taking feedback, from the clowns like (begins with P) in the Discords. There, I said it because it needs to be said. Blizz should, in my opinion, take everything those lunatics suggests on Discord and their YouTube videos and simply ignore it. These “theory crafters” base everything off their spreadsheets and not how the class actually plays in the real world. The “top players” in the DK Discord nearly killed Unholy before Blizz went “Wait a minute…” and reverted the changes. I hope they do same with SP.

I think there’s some truth to what you’re saying. And they should pay attention to the reactions of real players who love this class and have been playing it for several seasons.

shadowpriests are currently topping the dps list in almost every raid and dungeon ive been in with them.
I logged my 242 healer alt that has no enchants and tried it as shadow with the single button rotation to see how it was doing and its almost keeping up with my fully enchanted 257 rogue so im not sure how people can say its bottom tier. Imo it seems overtuned atm.

The only thing wrong with SP is that its no longer a shadowpriest. it suddenly became a Void Mage.

We’re currently pretty good for single target, all we really need to function for dungeons is like 10% higher PL, and a CD reduction on TS so we can keep up with the large/fast pulls

  • Remove Void Form cast time and give it a CD reduction mechanic, either through apparitions or something else.
  • Buff Mind Flay slow to 70% (it’s slowing aspect hasn’t been noteworthy for a while now). Interruptable, has to be channeled, single target - more balanced than most slows in the game. Will hardly be impactful vs the current melee mobility in PvP, but it will help catching targets or keeping people at bay during the short gap windows.
  • Add Psychic Horror back, or give them a new cool CC tool.
  • Buff Mind Flay damage by 20%
  • Lower Halo CD to 45 secs with a slight dmg nerf. Archon feels boring for too long while waiting inbetween Halos
  • Make Invoked Nightmare baseline, nerf it to 75%, and make SW:P deal the full 150% dmg to targets with Madness. Feels really bad having to constantly swap between Invoked Nightmare and Misery all the time.
  • Fix tentacle slam dot application (ofc)
  • Fix tentacle slam Madness so it doesn’t override main madness

Boom, class is fixed.

While Shadow is currently OK dps wise, it’s damage can be a bit misleading, with great differences between Archon and Voidweaver. Halo does a good job at padding the dmg meters and boosting up the DPS. There’s a big difference between Archon and Voidweaver in that regard. When taken in a vacuum in a pure 1 target fight they fall behind most classes - even against classes like mage that are designed with cleave in mind. In a perfect AoE scenario as Frost I can outdmg within a shorter timeframe. Only times when I can’t, is when mobs are too spread out or get moved out of blizzard/comet and Halo ends up damaging everything anyway.

You are 100% right. It’s a disgrace. Blizzard keeps forcing us to play ‘their’ meta instead of letting us enjoy the classes we actually like. We pay a monthly subscription to have fun, not to be gatekept from M+ groups because of a massive 40% nerf to Soul Link.

Instead of balancing the game, they just pick favorites. Reducing direct-cast splash damage from 60% to 20% basically deleted Shadow Priests from high-end content. It feels like discrimination against players who don’t want to play the ‘flavor of the month’ class. We aren’t paying customers just to be ignored or forced into a reroll. Microsoft needs to look at how Blizzard is killing the diversity of their own game.

Has it ever? They could’ve removed it many years ago and non would’ve been the wiser

I did notice this, but I think it’s just a visual bug, otherwise it wouldn’t be as far ahead as it is in single target

Yeah a minute is a bit excessive

They honestly just need to buff it by 10%. The main pain point for aoe is the fact that TS is 15 sec recharge, if they reduced the recharge by 5-7 secs and made it hasted, our aoe wouldn’t suffer as much as it is. And maybe only maybe, if the recharge reduction doesn’t do it, increase the to count to 8

Psychic Link has to be removed, no spell has ever been changed more in the history of the game

Mind flay’s slow was relevant when mobility wasn’t as prevalent. Vanilla-tbc-wotlk mind Flay was more impactful. Now, with the passive movement speed increases ontop of more mobility tools it has lost its purpose. Mind flay: Insanity feels good to press, but the 70% slow loses its purpose as well for how short you channel it. Mind Flay should just become a 70% slow. It will give Spriest a “soft” CC to disrupt people trying to get away from one of the most immobile classes, or give Spriests a tool to keep the burstier melee at bay for a while longer. It would also be a decent way for them to peel.

And nah, tentacle madness overriding madness is not a visual bug. Madness simply does good damage overall. From my testing haphazardly spamming slam without regard if it’s going to override madness resulted in lower DPS

  1. bring back Dark ascension as an option in the middle again
  2. invoked nightmare make it baseline
  3. Halo CD is way to much and needs a reduction
  4. Make Psychic Link baseline
  5. Bring back devouring plague as another dot talent option

Better just revert the class back to TWW shadow priest

That is so unture it hurts to read that.

Also the comments on discord community are a bit harsh imho. They very very rarely post any suggestions how the class should work and how they should rework how it plays. Its just feedback, be it numerical or on the end of how it feels to play how its viable etc. They kinda do great work providing us with guides and helping when you ask there.

Are they right with everything, ofc not, but saying that their feedback destroyed the spec is a bit harsh imho.

Biggest issue when you dont have cds for next pack, other classes can do keep doing aoe while sp doing much lower! Mind flay needs buff or smt like that who can give us more competition. The question is why Blizzard still dont understand this priest class??? They dont!!!

well we aren’t ret paladins with instant wings of a dps cd and to top it of 4 dungeons we are useless in because our scream cant fear undead.

bring up that credit card for something you can’t mention on forums but blizzard suppourts.

starts with B and ends with T

dead burred finito.

Shadow Priest is dead if you try to pug at least +12, it is really hopeless. I play with ppl I know, but unfortunately not always. Blizzard really need do something about shadow priest, it is extremtly frustrating.

I do enjoy SPriest, but not on Retail.
To be fair Cata/MoP was my favourite itteration of it. Shadow Orbs!

I know we shall never get that back sadly, but the rose tinted goggles are real with this one!

I agree, I was doing keys with my tank friend, and I’m not feeling completely off, but when I trying to pug solo, I can feel it, nobody wants SP in thier grp. Warlock, Devourer or Aug - top 3 wanted classes.
