Is Wow Really an mmo anymore?

One can argue its a hack n slash dungeon simulator with MMO features , rather than an mmo.

‘One’ would be quite wrong.

Define what a MMO is to you, then we compare it to the offical terminology AND THEN we can talk.

It’s an MMO, it just feels less of an MMORPG these days.

Love your guild name, one does wonder if theres a Gaelic version called ‘Pog Ma Thoin’

On topic, yeas it’s still an MMO

i think it is what you make of it tho.

Persistent world, server with other players connecting, you may argue its rpg elements are lacking or developed poorly, but overall it is MMORPG for sure.

I treat it like a single player game myself.

it is as much an mmo as you want it to be.

So. MMO just means massively multiplayer, which it is. And this is an MMORPG, and it fits the RPG part too. So maybe what you mean is that it’s a limited RPG MMO where there is a concerted effort to appeal and appease the people who play it as a single player game.

From the 1 button assit, the chat restrictons and the ever vague but easy to enforce social contract you can easily argue the social aspect of the game can only exist with a toxic positivity infecting everyone, which means, no one.

The game is on rails with 5 seat belts moving at 5KPH all the while screaming todays politics at you in a smug tone.
Games cooked mate. Only way to enjoy is brain off, chat blocked and with friends over discord.

Having options to enjoy the game in different way doesn’t make it ‘not an MMORPG’.
Having stories that don’t interest you, doesn’t make it a ‘not an MMORPG’.

If you only enjoy dungeons and consider that ‘the game’, then that’s on you.

So… Yes, it’s an MMORPG. And no, one can not argue about that.

Yes, it is a MMORPG, it simply went overboard with ensuring that going entirely solo is way too optimal for the majority of it. I am not saying that playing solo should not be viable, I am simply stating that the incentives given to solo players have hurt the group aspect too much outside of the extreme end of difficult content.

Why has it hurt it?
If you like multiplayer content, then do multiplayer content.

its a Light version of an MMORPG

it leans more towards an ARPG

I am doing multiplayer content. My issue is that I play a multiplayer game where I hurt my actual progress because I want to play multiplayer with my friends and guildmates instead of going entirely solo and only typing “hi” once in guild chat.

Again, I never said that playing solo should not be viable or it should not let a player outright complete the game. My issue is that it is optimal, and not just by a little.

i dont mind it being an ARPG

but i do think esports of the game has ruined it.

they have made the huge WoW world pretty empty and a que simulator ,
there is literally no point in World quests or exploratioin, it has become a side gig with no player power

thats why people generally consider the game an ARPG and not a MMORPG

World of Warcraft is no longer an MMORPG.

It’s hanging onto RPG by a thread simply through character progression. The game does almost nothing to foster roleplay choices, in fact it will often try to hurt your ability to deselect a piece of content.

But where things really break down is the MMO part and the intersection between RPG and MMO.

It’s not an MMO because it no longer features massive amounts of players in a single world space, or shard. That’s it. It’s not an MMO because of phasing.

And you might think that’s a small detail, but I strongly disagree. Having thousands of players on a single persistent map is the whole point of the genre altogether. That’s what birthed it. That’s what it is, and they ripped it out.

This also means they killed the sense of MMO community, and they killed the sense of self as a character in a multiplayer context - ie fame and infamy as someone else in a virtual space.

World of Warcraft has been completely destroyed and replaced by a different game. If you like that game, that’s cool - but it wasn’t a very nice thing for Blizzard to do.

There’s a reason the Classic+ crowd is going off. They’re seeking something WoW no longer offers because it is not an MMO; we’re hoping Blizzard will turn a new leaf and spend some WoW money making an MMORPG again. That’s what this is about.

Facts :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: You see more people driving around Tokyo in Forza 6 than in wows open world. I legit log to the game, refresh lfg, do a key or two a day and log off. :joy:

I do. If you care about m+ progression you have to pretty much reroll to s+ spec or you’ll be stuck in lfg. I think changing mains so easily has no place in retail. Unless blizzard are really gonna double down on accessability and they’ll add solo queue etc to the game
