It’s just when people try a new game they do not know what to expect… and what they jump into next. With WoW retail right now you literally know that every patch is the same but differently scaled. Ofcourse people will not bother anymore if FF14 is hyped right now and clearly a solution to get into for now. Atleast I enjoy TBC as it’s not as corrupt as retail is today… disagree with many changes and that “mount” but still like it 
Ff14 cash shop isn’t comparable to WoW’s cash shop.
WoW attempt to funnel you into theirs where as SE dont really center their game around theirs.

What if people don’t care about endgame in FF14? It’s a story driven game and it does not focuses on end game hard content. There is some, but it’s not the core aspect.
In WoW Classic I loved leveling, not really the raids unless a healer. In TBC I liked leveling and early progression. In FF14 I like the story and I’m curious to do crafting/gathering, do some harder modes.
Still uncertain if I will buy and play but one things is certain - I will not return to 9.2 or any expansion if only thing they will offer is a raid tier, crippled M+ and then some bland always-win world quest alike systems designed to force you to log in constantly or fall behind.

There is a photo on reddit of an FF14 account that is only free to play - the guy spent over a year and still didn’t finished every job 
And don’t expect New World, Ashes of Creation and alike to not have expensive sub and cash shop. New World already wanted to put boosts/skips just after launch.
i’ve seen their monetization. No thanks. Maybe Ashes is going to change their direction, but looking at the “alpha” prices. Its insane and a joke at least.

MMOs cost many hundred of millions to make, maybe even billions during a whole year of active development. No good MMO will be cheaper than this. They have to make 100ds of millions of profit per year.
And those alpha prices are explicitly that -funding the game.
Most overhyped game everythanks to streamers. Tried it and it really wasn’t to my tastes, i’m probably too casual for it.

MMO? It will always be expensive. The costs are just to high. If you look at say Hearthstone - there costs are minuscule compared to WoW.
