Kael'thas says void rights? šŸ¤”

By retcon i mean the fact that belfs, suddenly acted as scared of arcane nelfs savages, while belfs entire arc at the start of BC is ā€œstop act as arrogant fools/smell our own farts, and embrace whatever will save the remains of 1/10 of initial belf population, surviving > all, even joining the Hordeā€. So their sudden distaste to void is reallllyyy weird and out character. Belf still at larger feeding of demon crystals and using the ā€œtabboā€ arcane/fire spells, and even fel, so why to make void exception? Even more so, since in Legion we have literal fel-fueled belf DH.

But that was when they scraped any little magic they could find as beggers to sate their hunger. Now its not the same conditions.

They might be pragmatic race but also prideful - would not stand some small batch sabotage what they have worked so hard for.

Its not about just needs for energy to feed on. Their entire mindset in TBC was forward-thinking, progressive, ā€œwe smelled out own farts for 10 000 year believing in our superiority as a race and superiority of ours ways, but Arthas teach us otherwise/maybe we arenā€™t as great and powerful as we think ourselfs to be, since there was 10 000 or peace. To survive we need to changeā€. Almost all (if not all) belfs npc in wow was their gossip writed around those ideas. So ofc, when the race which would literally dare to made powerful demons into duracells, made manaboms, etc, starts acting iffy around void, it seems really really weird.

But havenā€™t Blood Elves were focred to do so because of that lesson and will to survive and adept. That was the only way they were offered, which in turn led to a dangerous road of corruption and deception. The hunt for power came with consequences (Kaelā€™thas). The returning nation started to step away from that path and gifted Light source became their way of life. The second chance to rise from the ashes. Their approach to magic has changed from being magic vampire suckers from siphoning it from Sunwell once again. To which as shown Void does not work and in fear of sabotaging the Sunwell, it is understandable why they exiled those who practied said magic.

Now which depiction was better is questionable at the best, but right now as it stands the Blood Elves are no longer in that same mindset as in TBC and that change has been slowly been told over the expansions.

They retconed Kael into being a villain yes, alongside with Illidan, only to retcon Illidan into be a good guy later in Legion. So who cares, Kael is already in Revendeth, Illidan is second Jesus, apparantly, so the point about ā€œcorruptionā€ and such do not stands at all. Also as far as we can read in npc texts, nothing has changes since restoring the Sunwell. Light has failed belfs once, and they would never forget it, for crying out loud they literally calling them self belf so not to forget who they are and what they are. Your point would be valid if they renamed themselfs into ā€œligh elfsā€ or something. But as it is in lore, they are still the same TBC forward thinking inventors, who not let dumb superstition to deny their progress. Even in belf intro it stated that most belfs doesnā€™t buy into the kuck light ways, and still doing their own thing. As far as i can remember in entire belf lore there was only one belf, the mageā€™s companion in Legion campaign, which openly stand aginst using fel. Which doesnā€™t prevented her from using arcane and fire, which by lore is pretty much as ā€œbadā€ and ā€œcorruptingā€ as fel or void. Especially in the eyes of backwards savages like nelfs.

I would not call Illidans or Kaels stories retcon (Maybe 2nd coming back was trying to amend the TBC mess ups ) but rather then taking down their paths into rather unfortunate direction - which almost all races suffered over the times.

If you mean that whatā€™s the point of morality if nothing really matters in the end, then I will say that Illidanā€™s current arc (as cheesy as it is) ended with him never losing track of his mission and was aware that that path would leave him alone and so dmwas it.

As for Elves after destruction of Sunwell their mission was to set out to rebuild their society and find the cure. Not to Forget the fallen and the lesson learned from Arthas that their nation is not invincible. Life might punch you so hard and humble you that you might not want to come back to fight with same weapons. Which is what Kael doubled down on. In the search of great power he brought no less splintering and destruction to the nation then before. Those Elves coming back were offered the stability of Sunwell once more, even if it took getting rid of mad remnant of their past (Kael). Which doesnā€™t really mean they have stopped being ā€œprogressiveā€ they are just more aware of the destructive nature of abusing magic. And they would have been right about the void users if not Alleriaā€™s precise arrival.

To which by the way Night Elves have learned that lesson centuries ago and kept vigil to defend the world against any reckless moves their kin once brought to Azeroth.
