Laptop Advice, Big Screen or Better GPU?

So, I am planning to upgrade my current laptop, an Antique 7700hq, 1050ti Asus, which struggles to mantain 35+ fps in Oribos/Raids/BGs.
On my 1100-1200 Euros Budget i found 2 laptops. Both have SSD, i7 or ryzen 7, 16gb ddr4, but the single difference is diplays and GPU:

  1. 1660Ti + 17.2 inch 120hz display.
  2. 3060 + 15.6 inch 120hz display.

So, is it worth it to go for a bigger display, or a newer GPU. Is the difference between 15 and 17 inches bigger then 1660ti vs 3060?
Cheers.

1660 Ti is way weaker than RTX 3060 so getting the new one looks better.

Also check which i7 and which Ryzen 7 the laptop has.

  • Some Intels i7 are quad core - that’s barely worth it, especially if you want to play other games.
  • Old laptops may have Ryzen 3000 and not 4000/5000 - avoid any 3000 series Ryzen

From the benchmarks and reviews I saw, 2060 is barely 5% faster then 1660ti in Laptops, and 3060 mobile is sometimes WEAKER then 2060, depending on CPU. So I think a Ryzen 4800 + 1660ti would be close to a 4 core i7 and 3060. Not to mention the bigger screen, and the price difference of 900 euros vs 1200. Think I’ll go with an Asus TUF A17. The 3060 option was Asus TUF Dash f15, but seems like the CPU really bottlenecks that one, and the perormance may be actually WORSE at 1080p.

3060 performance depends on which wattage it’s set to (there is a wide range of config options). One of reasons why gaming laptops aren’t that “fun” right now.

Operate on facts and not on wild guesses. Check reviews of specific laptop models. You can get widely different results for same hardware based on cooling solution or TDPs set in given model.

i7-10750H will be really good for games while 11350H as a quad core will start to struggle in some games. Asus TUF Dash with this CPU comes with RTX 3070 or 3060 and a lot of games is CPU limited already, especially for 3070. Asus TUF A15/A17 no-dash with Ryzen 5800H is dramatically better (and bit bigger than the Dash).

Also old Asus TUF A15/17 (Ryzen 4000 series) had bad cooling and really bad screens. Right now Lenovo Legion 5 seems to be really nicely priced while having good reviews (especially with the 144 Hz screen over 120Hz one).

After searching the local E-shops I found a re-packed HP Omen, at 1.200 Euros, from being 1700+ originally. It has been used for like 2 months, and still has a full warranty.

  • i7 10750
  • 2070 Super 8Gb, full wattage model not Max Q
  • 17.3" 144hz display, 100% rgb
    Ordered it right now.
My current laptop served me for the last almost 4 years, so I tought i spend a few extra money on something really good, that will serve me for at least as much. Cheers for the help mate.

Just double check the laptop when it arrives so that so if there is something hidden you already notice and return it.

The specs look really nice and the price is reasonable

My advice would be to get a desktop for gaming, but too many people just fail to get that, despite the “horrific aesthetic” of any incarnation of a desktop case, they will ALWAYS be the better machine for gaming.

Despite technological advances within laptop components, those levels of machine are realistically intended for work tasks; gaming laptops are largely a marketing ploy.

EDIT:
Bigkeg-twisting-nether covered it perfectly - plus, the recent $h!t-show over Max-Q et al variants for 30-series mobile GPU’s hasn’t made matters any better when it comes to laptop for intense graphical workloads.

I had a desktop with an RTX 3070, sold it a month ago after using it for 3 weeks. I don’t really like playing video games in my room, in a upright chair. With the laptop I can sit in the garden or outside, or just lay in bed. I managed to sell my rig for exactly the price I bought it for, because of the GPU shortage, and now I’m using that cash to get a laptop instead.
I am willing to give 3070 vs 2070 Super perfomance difference any day for the versatility and mobility of a laptop.
