Long-term Dissatisfied Players, When Did It Go Downhill For You?

We’re all familiar with the “I’m quitting/have quit” and possible list of reason(s) why. So allow me to try a slightly different take on that theme and instead invite players both current and ex to think back on where the game began to lose your passion and why.

Disclaimer as well while I’m at it - I’m no hardcore raider, I’m not a high end M+ spammer nor ever have been. My time with WoW has been as casual as can be, with mostly jumping into random BGs at end game throughout the years and expansions. Stated for when someone inevitably posts “you didn’t do X raid or hit Y key at the time.” or similar.

Back to the topic and thinking on this a good bit myself, my own opinion might be somewhat controversial as the expansion was far from the worst, but for me, my passion in the game began a downhill with the content started in Legion.

Why? I feel like Legion started too many trends which diminished the progression, longevity and story of the game. Legion added:

- The last Warchief. Legion’s story overall was fine here, my gripe with “Legion’s” story is solely based on it being the gateway for Sylvanas’ Warchief arc and the absolutely horrendus plot that is still suffered of her existence to this day. Sad to blame this on Legion, but this was where she was promoted to begin it all and make Horde identity a joke.

  • Artifact traits. Very cool in themselves at the time, but super grindy if you had alts to consider, whereas before as an alt addict I could just hit max level and progress, artifact power was a new barrier you had to re-visit if you wanted to be competitive, regardless of gear. It also opened the way to giving players borrowed power, which could be very fun, but would then get stripped and redundant next expansion (azerite traits, covenants). Having to re-do the same quests and scenarios for same class alts to get their weapons was particularly unfun as well.

-Mission board gated class hall progression. Absolutely awful. Being locked out of your class hall chapters until you run enough chores to then have to wait hours for a mission before you can move on. Sure, WoD started this, but add the fact that you are now doomed to suffer this for every character you have if you wish to continue, or at least those of a unique class and it’s terrible.

  • Allied races. At the time, I daresay I speak for most of us on being immensely hyped for the potential of what allied races could offer us. I still love Highmountain and Lightforged to this day, and held out high hopes for awesome, long-term established Warcraft races to be given their chance to join factions, Ogres, Murlocs, Naga? Instead what we ended up getting years later was lazily re-skeleton’d additional Elves, Vulpera who had no existing lore outside of BFA, yet another type of Dwarf and the Hara-who? Shoehorned in allied ‘races’ that have the bare-minimum for animations, lore and fleshing out. Allied races eroded whatever identity each faction had left in terms of races as Alliance got Belves, Horde got Night Elves and even a skin of Dwarf. By far my biggest disappointment with what could have been one of the best additions to WoW.

Again, most of these aren’t really blamed on Legion itself; the lamer allied races came later. The story was a million times better than BfA and beyond, artifact power was okay as an initial thing, but set the precedent for just repeatedly adding and removing new, borrowed powers. It’s a harsh view of saying this is where my dissatisfaction originated, at the time it certainly didn’t; with hindsight and reflection though, these additions and their increasingly watered-down, lamely implemented future versions all began here.

But enough about my rant, fellow dissatisfied players both old and new, what expansion and its features began your own dissatisfaction? At what point did you think “this was fine for one expansion/season.” only for it to be recycled?

I’m not dissatisfied with the game, overal.
There’s particular little things that I find annoying/dumb, but on the whole I’m still enjoying the game.

Sorry to not be a downer. :face_blowing_a_kiss:

That’s fine, it’s a free forum (well I guess not technically as you need a WoW account to post but you get me).

Feel free to share if you like, I remain doubtful the forums are ever really considered for feedback being taken into account, but it could still be something meaningful to add to the topic. =)

Edit: Sorry to be a downer myself I mean.

I am as well, I’ve played since late TBC (never hit end game) and stuck with the game until around a few weeks ago, with Midnight being the only expansion never purchased. So it’s not with any glee I write this, just a disappointment and a hope that the game might be able to spark the passion I once had for it.

Even so, thanks for the reply!

Reasons I stopped subscriptions in the past:

1: Inconsistency in class balance.
When your main constant getting pruned to the point it is unplayable in competitive Situations anymore (Like Preservation Evoker was fine in DF until they nerfed its identity into oblivion)
Made me stop playing in DF S2

2: Heavy RNG dependency
I farmed that legendary Weapon for Evoker back then for 21 IDs and never saw it drop, that led in combination with #1 to quit.

3: Tanking isn’t fun anymore.
Before I mained Prevoker, I mained Bear for more than a decade. Tanking always was manageable but especially in midnight where you get one hit in higher keys through mitigation well then that’s ruining the tank experience entirely.
This didn’t led me to stop playing this time but I stopped tanking and became healer instead

  • The start-up of getting into delves in this new expansion felt especially bothersome for me. It wasn’t fun, it was slow, it was just a bit too involved for my taste. Now that I’m geared a bit and my companion is leveled a bit more, I find them more enjoyable again.
  • Valeera; utterly hate her. I wish they would add a choice between 3 different delve companions: Their powers can be the same, just with different skins/animations/flavour. There should, imo, be 1 horde companion, 1 alliance companion and 1 neutral companion.
  • Lack of character customization on several races, especially allied races.

At the moment those are my main irritations with the game.
So, yeah… No serious issues if you look at the big picture, I guess.

Thank you for yours. Everyone’s feedback is equally important. In a perfect world we’d all be happy with the game. Unfortunately some things directly oppose one another and so we’ll likely never have a situation where everyone’s happy.

I have had my ups and downs with WoW. I did not buy WoD due to the lack of interest in its concept. I skipped that expansion pack altogether. I did not agree with Blizzard’s earlier no flying approach. I cancelled my subscription over the planned original implementation of the RealID. I did not like the live feed of character activities either on the armory. Currently, I do not like the poor quality of the game and the lack of useful customer service.

I’m at this weird state where what has kept me playing for longer than 10 years now is real-life friends. When the last of them goes (and there is no sight of that happening within the next 20 years either), I go to.

Every expansion has brought things that I would design different as an armchair developer.

I decided in this expansion to focus on my tank at the start.

I maxed out Valeera and now it’s great for all alts. I will do this every expansion from now on.

WoW started going downhill for me after it became obvious they have no idea or indeed no interest in writing masculine or morally grey characters so decided to kill them all off or ruin them usually to either push a female character into the spotlight or more effeminate males.

This has culminated into the deaths of interesting and awesome characters like Garrosh, Varian, Vuljin and even Sylvanas who has been horrifically written for years now and seems to be now on the brink of some kind of redemption arc because you know friendship, family, love blah blah blah.

Things like the trading post have some horrific additions which to me make a complete mockery of the warcraft IP and what it used to stand for. Powerful and aggressive male and female characters have been replaced with lets all stand holding hands and bask in the power of friendship. I get WoW has always had a kind of camp and tongue in cheek tone but they have completely moved the slider off the scale these days. I miss a more serious and gritty side to WoW. Hopefully Classic plus will deliver that but we shall see…

Despite people overall liking it and putting it very high, I feel like it started with Legion and was never “old way” ever since. I was not satisfied with gameplay dynamic shift and how they reworked classes I used to play at the time (Mage and Rogue specifically) and it was the first time I felt the overload of content and obligatory grind (remember artifact knowledge?) so I took my first patch gap when 7.2 landed and came back only to get some artifact skins at the end of 7.3.

Then I took a break during 8.2. Nazjatar and neck/azerite traits grind was too much for me. Went back at 8.3 for corruption funsies. Then I took a break after the start of SL. Anima and covenant farm was too much and Korthia felt insanely terrible since its very announcement. This was breaking point for me - I questioned myself “why do I waste so much time in game I don’t even like” couple of times and then blasted my first account.

I came back eventually somewhere at the very end of SL and DF pre-patch, but my perception of the game was never same as it was once. I’m still dissatisfied with some ongoing things (overload of content and weird class design decisions two addons in a row at this point) but I now consider this game more like a giant sandbox with 20 years of content that is not relying on current state in game and it helps a lot.

The writing has fallen in quality significantly.

In the past, the story was a huge part of why I played, today it’s something that gets in the way before I can raid / run keys.

World of Warcraft went downhill for me when Mythic+ and the WoW Token were introduced.

It was mainly BFA.

Azerite gear to farm and grind the azerite for. When they rebalanced them you had to grind out a new set for some.

Paladin starting out in a horrible state on two specs out of the three.

If you wanted to reroll you had to start the azerite grind again. There was catch up, but if you were raiding mythic you had to grind more to get the 4th ring on your armor.

Benthic pieces with sockets being sidegrades to mythic gear meant a lot of grinding to gamble for them.

When we got heart of azeroth we had to grind out each power on every single character. That meant doing mechagon on multiple characters for the healer power, or pvp for the versatility buff one.

Corruptions last season being completely RNG drop which for some classes caused wildly different performance results. If you as Fire mage had 2-3 masterful corruptions you could solo a section of Carapace of N’zoth in P1 that a mage without those corruptiobs could not.

I usually maintained 3-4 characters for mythic raiding, and the amount of time needed to keep them somewhat in level was very tiring, and it felt every patch was just adding another layer to grind. That was partially on me wanting to be useful to my raid group, but it was a big contributor in pushing BFA below Shadowlands in terms of expansion quality.

And Shadowlands is already an extremely low bar.

I am still playing and still raiding, but I cannot stomach having an alt anymore outside of crafter alts. Even just the thought of having to do atleast 4 m+ on them makes me feel nauseous.

Oh Azerite gear was a mess, I remember not being able to use upgrades, because I didn’t have the azerite to unlock all of the options yet.

WoD was my first ‘rage quit’ unsub, where the absolutely terrible phasing all over the place launch, combined with Garrison instance not found had me unsub for..Two, three months? I can’t quite recall before resubbing to actually start a playable levelling experience lmao. So I hear this for sure.

I actually forgot about this one! I would reason it as having rarely been a forum user, though certainly if this did come into effect I would have been gone. Kinda crazy how the internet is going now into the digital ID wannabe stages huh? Scary..

I wish I could feel this :frowning: The few I had left playing understandably burned out in Shadowlands.

100% agree. I loved the tension and Horde identity Garrosh contributed in his Cata-Early MoP time. Pre ‘power at all costs/corruption’, you could actually relate to what he wanted to accomplish and he at least had some plausibility to what he did.

Made me so mad when the Horde players were forced to put up with Sylvanas blighting, burning, raising dead as long as we did and Garrosh’s line was drawn at Theramore/Vol’jin which paled in comparison to her BS.

I’ve found the trading post not too bad personally; yes it sorta FOMOS to a degree a monthly sub or at least check for the items and possible progression to get the tender, but the tasks were very achievable. While my listed ‘origins’ go back as far as Legion, the nails in the coffin sub-wise for me were the additions of Hearthsteel and yet another ‘early access’ expansion premium. Too egregious for my liking personally.

The writing has played a huge part since as a roleplayer, the overall plot and story previously worked wonders to keep me engaged.

To avoid quoting every other post in here I’ll take a break but thank you all for the replies here, enlightening to see the varying points in time or what reason(s) had people feel similar to me. Here’s hoping WoW might appeal to us more in the future.

The mythical + is the most played feature today

I dont dislike the training post itself its the things they offer in the trading post. Id prefer they were more themed in line with races, classes and customisation

I’d love that, tanking side by side with my bear.

Survival should of been exactly that when they changed it to melee.
