M+ PUG from healer perspective (and how to change it)

Healer shortage for PUG groups does not surprise me. Trying this with my paly alt and all I see is…

Player Issues

  1. Not interrupting, not cc-ing (needs massive over-healing to counter it → blame healer)

  2. Standing in stuff they should not stand in (gets one-two shot → blame healer)

  3. Not standing in stuff they need to stand in (group wipe → blame healer)

XXX → Blame healer…

It makes +2 with PUG way harder than +10 with organized group.

Possible Solution - Reward good players

  1. Successful interrupt - boost DPS/heal/tank for that particular player for 10s by xy%

  2. Standing in bad stuff - dampen your DPS for 10s by xy% (stacking! :D)

  3. Standing in important stuff you need to stand in - boost your DPS/tank/heal for 10s by xy%

  4. Group contribution table at the end of the dungeon. Bad players will get lower ranks/rewards/rating. Good players will get a way better stuff (for example vault bonus). Basically PvP model for PvE.

What are your ideas how to change it?

No. Blizzard can’t fix stupid.

What needs to change are they things at the top. Where no matter how well the DDs kick people still die to combo-wombos.

You have done like 15 keys with this alt. Be specific… In ALL 15 keys you got blamed for everything, or just one?

And then… Ignore the trolls. But a word of advice. Trolls might say things with bad manners but you should still take their feedback regardless. Try to think of ways you can save even the most moronic of players.

Because in a 2+ its possible. Swirlies dont 1-shot and you definitely can heal them.

And that us practice for what comes later. When no matter how well DDs kick they still risk dying and you can save thrm.

Anything is easier with an organized group. New players with no experience normally dont know people to organize themselves in. The group you did that 9+ PSF are all veterans of the game. That 2+ would have also been easy with them.

If you pug a 10+ your in for a world of hurt as well. But that is normal. You are not skilled. You need to practice more.

None of the veteran healers were born knowing how to heal. They learned to do so by failing. A lot. So fail. Learn. And see you in a couple of seasons. You will be doing +18s in no time.

As for what changes I would do? Two. Specifically.

  • Smart targeting of mobs. For example: no “XYZ bolt” casts while a major AoE mechanic is going on. Or, mobs cant target a player with more than 1 bolt. Or, cant be hit by a major mechanic 2 times in a row.
  • Make a default VohDo ir Healbot UI. And make it active the moment you change to healer. With default click-on-party frames keybinds by default. Basically, an opt-out UI instead if an opt-in UI which is what we got now.

No, of course not. Some runs are really nice, when people know what to do, I do not even have to focus on healing much then, rather trying to help with “DPS”. And it is even relaxing then. It is like 50/50 for me, or something around.

Thanks for your reply.

And yes, of course I am learning to play my paly after many many years on druid…It is very different…

As Uda said, you can’t fix Stupid. You can’t change someone/something that will do its damnest not to. In this game, you have your sub and your sub is the strongest thing you can use.

I fix this mess with pugs by not… pugging at all. Instead I join guilds and communities with a likeminded attitude. The latter isn’t even that different from a pug. It’s just the organising of people/players that took the initiative of taking an extra step by simply being able to talk to each other.

I’ve noticed that majority doesn’t even have dbm/bw. (My WA tracks everyone’s interrupts only when it’s installed.)

None of those ideas work sadly.

Reward people for interupting and they kick the little bolt to get the buff and then all die to the giga aoe doombolt 5 seconds later because they are all on cd.

Stacking ‘do less damage’. Grats now the healer has to heal a pack for 5 min instead of 2 and so on.

Just get past the baddies asap and youll ne in groups of people with comparable skill.

Yeah, the “do less damage” debuff is not the great idea. As complete group would be punished for this.

But as Blizzard is changing so many things for future expansion (the API for addons seems to be the biggest one) they could come up with something (not deserter debuff…).

Was doing one HoA yesterday, at the start I really need people to help out. I need to dispell, save big CDs for Thrash. Tank also pulled double Houndmaster on top of multiple casters, fine with BL, but when we wipe, don’t retry the pull 2 times without  . I believe the Mark of Obl. circle also caused people to add AoE dmg, since they don’t seem to know it does that.

And I always try to interrupt, usually focussing on Houndmasters, I hope DPS at least interrupt the bolts, and assuming tank also interrupts that other caster ( Sin Eater etc ).

I felt bad afterwards, since I felt I was partly to blame, but people should also use their interrupts, I mean, we had a hunter, and I didn’t see frost trap once, Stun Arrow, ST stun or Tar Trap.

I spoke to someone on a discord, he didn’t have that Mark of Obl. hit that hard, in my group I saw it ticking hard. Does it tick harder if it adds AoE dmg ?

it was a community run, and not that I am perfect, and I can carry people through some things with shaman heals, but that opening is really difficult, and I didn’t get why he had to add the 2nd Houndmaster that comes from the right at start.

When I pull that one on my tank, I move forward, not left. Some Pro pulls are not meant for some groups.

Don’t know, I play BDK in keys and I find most healers mostly useless anyway. Low hps, damage and they are the ones constantly dropping dead first somehow. Maybe just my opinion but they actually need to step up.

This is only a problem if ppl have no idea what they are doing. There are many Players not only avoiding damage (anybody can fail), but mitigating incoming damage while interrupting casts and doing dmg - even pug only. I‘ve seen this myself now many addons.

Had a group this morning where healer went afk mid fights every few minutes because of baby. It was hell. Easiest alt+f4 ever.

Well… i mean… I could say the same about Tanks… Some tanks… OMG… It’s horrible to have to baby sit them all the time. I do it anyways because its practice for harder keys IMO.

DDs its harder to identify specifically. But I really notice the difference between gigachad DDs and… more modest DDs… Not just on kicks and stuff, but on raw DPS. I mean… if a boss lasts 2min instead of 4min… its a HUGE difference.

Healers I dont know. I have been playing healer for so long I forgot what it’s like to have someone else heal…

But in the keys I am doing I wish I could participate in the DD a bit more. Even when optimizing all my DPS rotation to the max, I still can barely manage 1/2 of tank DPS… :frowning:
