New Player - needing some advice

Hi,
Im a complete 2019 new player to world of warcraft, i didn’t play retail or the original classic version.

I am currently playing on “Dreadmist” realm as a Human Paladin on the alliance side. I have recently reached level 21 and completed all quests for the deadmines dungeon.

Before creating my character I knew nothing about roles for dungeons/raids/pvp. After some time playing I have been doing some research on what my role would be and people say healer. People are also saying Paladins are not the best for the vanilla version and are only used for buffs and a secondary heal if things are not going great.

  • Have I chosen a character bewt suited to a experienced player

  • Will I have trouble finding groups/raids/dungeons in the later game.

-Shall I just finish this character up to level 60 and learn the game properly?

Finally, i have already reset my talents at level 20 for 1gold because i was told about needing to be a healer and my talents i have nothing on the holy section. Shall i fill the holy section since late game im used for a healer only?
I would like to state i enjoy playing a DPS role, but I have only ever done 1 dungeon and thats deadmines.

Cheers

Support classes are considered harder than pure dps classes. If it’s your first contact with wow i would recommend picking one of the dps specs, like warlock, rogue, warrior.

Hello Cooper,

As long as you enjoy playing paladin, I don’t think there is any reason for you to stop. Of course you are welcome to test other character classes available in game. There are quite a few that could fill a DPS spot. Paladin can do that too. Simply in the 60 level content of the game, he was seen in the past as a healer and character keeping the buffs running on everyone in the raid. That being said, it doesn’t mean that you must play this way. It was simply considered the most suitable role for that class in the old raids. It totally doesn’t mean that there were no other paladin specialisations during that time. For example pretty well known Leeroy Jenkins was clearly not on a healing duty during his infamous pre-pull years ago

If you are planning to stay with your guild, it may be best to ask them what they expect from you in the future. If it would healing and you are not interested in it, it is still perfectly good time to test some other classes and start a new character. In the end the choice is really yours. There is no class in World of Warcraft that doesn’t have a DPS specialisation option. Simply some of them are a bit more suited for it then the other.

Hope you will find the best option that you will love to play soon enough.

Hi, and welcome to WoW!

I don’t know what to tell you. I never played Classic myself, so I have no experience.

The best known Ret Paladin in the Classic world is Esfand, and he has made a two-part guide on how to be viable as a a Ret Paladin in Classic. I watched it a while ago, and, much though I like Paladin, decided it looked like far too much work for me:

My Paladin in retail switches between Ret and Prot all the time, but like you, I have no interest in healing, and I know that’s what most people would expect of me in Classic.

One thing I can say is that not everyone guesses their ideal class on the first try.

Another thing I can say is that you can enjoy more than one class, perhaps in different ways. You can make another character without abandoning your Paladin, and switch between when you feel like a change.

There is a mass of infomation about classes in Classic. This YouTube search will get you some very good information:
