Newbie Questions

You can go to any inn in the game. You can set your Heathstone at any of them by talking to the Innkeeper.

While levelling, it is usually most useful to set tour Hearthstone to an inn in the zone where you are questing, and move it to the new one when you move on.

Logging out in an inn means you (almost certainly) won’t be killed while logged out, which can happen if you log out just as a mob crosses you outside an inn. More importantly, you get extra experience - “rested XP” - when you log in again after you had a good rest at the inn. And of course, the Inn is handy to vendor all the trash you picked up while questing!

Dottie - I found a mailbox with crates Thank you so much for being so friendly. I tried to send a message back but I couldn’t search you name.

I’m going to try and level to quick so I can use my new things!

Grainne - Thank you

I didn’t realise I could change my stone to the inn for each quest or that if I log off in the wrong place?

I’ve always just logged off without thinking about it!!

Should this be the time I find a profession? I read online about it but wasn’t sure where to go

If you unsure about proffetions then - mining and herbs I will suggest for lvling. Once u get familiar with all proffetions u can choose what suits you best. I prefer mining and engineering on rouge for fun.

About HS most people set to ogrimaar inn. Most portals are there so it’s THE place to travel anywhere in the world. Just keep exploring flight masters so if u need to go back then u can just take flight path. At lvl 60 u can have flying mount so have fun. No more stick to ground.

Where you log off you always log in at same place so you can start doing whatever you upto.

Professions are not necessary by any means during leveling.
If anything, they are in my opinion time well wasted.

You can focus on professions later on when you are more comfortable with the rest of the game. The professions got a huge overhaul when the newest expansion, Battle for Azeroth launched and now the professions are split in between the classic (vanilla) and other expansions from the past instead of being one big deal. Even as max level the only professions I find any way useful are fishing & cooking. Rest is just expensive and not profitable in most cases.

At max level, alchemy would have a word with you about being worth or not
Even just for double duration flask
And engineering is also great, for the extra brez, glider, jeeves/reaves and all the other gadgets.

Ppl can get lots of gold if they want with herbalism aswell atleast start of xpac.

Debatable in raiding environment where the guild provides the flasks anyway, but I see your point if you have to get your flasks by yourself.
However profitable is questionable when the herbs are more valuable than the flasks or potions themselves considering how much of the herbs they need.

There was a time when professions made a difference to your character, and a way to develop it, and another interest in the game, but sadly that’s all gone now.

However, I’m on board with Herbalism, at least, while levelling. And for a new player with no resources, Mining as well. Both give XP, and while Blizzard have almost destroyed their value while levelling, you may get lucky and sell something - and you will surely make a LOT of gold (for a new player) auctioning your herbs and ores in BfA content, above level 110.

Debatable? I am the one providing the flasks for my guild. :joy:
And having 2 hour flask duration is amazing when you raid and do m+ daily, you save a hell a lot of gold and other resources.

Great to see you’re progressing nicely, Gemzee!

Kudos to Dottie for sending some gear over as well, and everyone else for helping point Gemzee in the right direction with some play hints and tips! :).

Hi guys

So I am slowly but surely levelling up.

I have some really basic questions:

  1. everyone seems to have mounts I haven’t found a way for the game to explain how to obtain them or learn - currently walking everywhere takes a long time?

  2. My characters clothing - should I keep replacing it whenever I get something at a higher level? Like a 32 cloak is better than a 31 cloak or do I need to look at other stats?

  3. I’ve learned apparently I need daggers for abilities but I don’t seem to have any? Where can these be purchased?

  4. I feel like I’m wondering a lot without any quests or the quests I do have I can’t find on the map? Sometimes I get quests that require more than one person but I don’t know anyone else that plays. I tried to make a quest group but no one responded. Some quests when there’s a big mob I have no idea how my character is meant to find the item/slay the target when so many others attack me? I die alot I cant seem to heal myself much.

I have so much more to ask but that will do for now lol !

Gemzee

Are you logged in now? I could log in and give you a hand with some stuff.

OK.

  1. You should have got a quest Learn to Ride at level 20.

You need to go back to Silvermoon, pay him to train you to ride, and then buy a mount. As a Blood Elf, your first mount will be a Hawkstrider. Mount collecting is one of the things you will get into later, but for now, Hawkstriders are your race’s mount. You can pick any colour, or every colour if you have the gold; they all do the same thing.

Since you’re level 40 now, you can also buy

while you’re there. This allows you to ride faster than at level 20.

Your next Riding increase will be at level 60, when you learn to fly - which is one of the greatest experiences in WoW!

  1. This gets really complicated later. To do a full analysis for a specific character, talent spec, build, rotation, you need a computer program to run thousands of simulations. I tell you this just because you should never believe that the answer is simple or definite.

Most commonly, the one with the highest Item Level will be better, but you can be more specific than that.

For now, as I said before: as Assassination Rogue, follow Agility. If you have two possible Cloaks you can use, use the one with more Agility, and sell the other to a vendor. Don’t agonise too much about it; you change gear quickly when levelling, and in those few cases where the one with Agility is not the better choice, it won’t be for long and won’t make much difference anyhow. After Agility, if it’s close, look for Haste and Critical Strike, which are both very good for you.

  1. Yes, Assassination uses Daggers. You can buy daggers at the Auction House, but they will be far too expensive for you. I could organise some for you, but you’re not online. You have two options:

a) Carry on until you find a quest that rewards a dagger. And then another quest that rewards a dagger.

b) Switch spec to Outlaw. You can switch spec by pressing N to get your Specialisation and Talents screen up, and choosing Outlaw. In Outlaw, you will be able to use swords. Outlaw has somewhat different attacks, but it will make life easier for you at least until you find some daggers.

  1. I’m not exactly sure what’s going wrong here. What zone are you trying to quest in? It can happen that if you don’t start a zone at the start, that you are not led to the main quests.

On the button bar right hand side bottom there is a reddish button that I think is suppose to represent a book, called Adventure Guide. You can pick up the starting quests for zones from that.

I didn’t think there were any more quests for more than one person left below level 60. There used to be, but they were nerfed or removed. What specific quests name?

Dying a lot may well be from using the wrong type of weapon. Rogues rely a lot on their weapons, and if you are not using the right type for your spec, you will not attack nearly as well as you should have.

It’s a pity you’re not online now. I’d like to help with the problem, but I’m not quite sure what it is from your description. Post again when you’re next in-game and if I’m around I’ll come and meet you.

I’m online!
The quest was for Dar’Khans head?

I’m now back on Silvermoon but I can’t find any available quests so I’m now searching for the riding guy.
Update finally found him! No idea why that quest disappeared thank you!

Thanks for explaining about agility being more important. When I get new items for now I’ll check than first before I swap based on level

I now need daggers so trying to find where my quests have went as I feel like no one is offering them so I’ll check the adventure guide recommendation thank you!

Ok, following up on some of the things I promised to explain in more depth.

What should you keep vs. what should you sell, and where and how to sell it?

Honestly, at low levels, below 100, it doesn’t matter all that much.

  • If you are trying to skill up a profession, then keeping materials you are going to use for that profession is good, but skilling up professions while levelling is sadly almost gone from the game.
  • If it’s a piece or armour or weapon you have outlevelled, and it’s Soulbound, then just vendor it.
  • If it’s grey quality, vendor it.
  • If it’s a Crafting Material, you might get more for it by selling it on the AH. But the AH takes a Listing Fee, which applies if it is not sold, and a commission that applies if it is, so if you list it for sale and it doesn’t sell, you lose the Listing Fee.
  • If it’s a Green or Blue piece of armour or weapon that dropped for you, and you don’t want to use it because it isn’t good for you or you have outlevelled it, you might get more for it by selling it on the AH. Or, again, it might not sell, abd you lose your deposit. If it does sell, it will likely sell for good gold. You can check typical prices for your realm on The Undermine Journal web site:
    https://theunderminejournal.com/#eu/chamber-of-aspects
  • If it’s a potion or something like that, and you don’t intend to use it, I would vendor it. Potions sometimes sell, but usually not, at low levels.

So the usual answer is: vendor everything you don’t have a use for, but sometimes you can make more for it on the AH, and if you can make more, that will usually be a lot more - like 10 times more to 1000 times more.

So you need to know what will sell on the AH. That comes with experience.

This is a three part video series showing the functions of the Auction House from the very very basics. It is 6 years old, but it is still excellent except that the opportunity for selling low level materials is almost gone now - but the mechanics and basic logic is still the same, and the main addons Auctionator, Postal are still working almost exactly the same. TradeSkillMaster has changed a lot, so those instructions are out of date, but that’s in the Advanced bit anyhow.

.

Heirlooms are gear and weapons that level with you. The armour also gives you extra XP to level faster. Here is a guide about them:

You can buy your main heirlooms from this vendor (prepare to get lost in Undercity again!)

and there are other heirlooms you can get as well.

Thanks for much.

For anyone reading Gràinne was helpful enough to meet me in game and help explain a few things a bit clearer plus I have a mount now!!

For a totally new player I feel I’ve gotten a bit lost on the game with quests, I’m still being offered quests which require 2/3 people but I also have so many scattered around the world I can’t seem to find my way back and complete them?

Also what’s the deal with chapters? Should I have done all the quests in one area first? Do i go back and start again? When i go to Silvermoon there doesn’t seem to be anything available so ant advice would be great.

I’ve also been watching videos on combo points as I say as a total beginner when on combat I’ve just been pressing buttons so now I’m learning certain moves first and what a finishing move is etc. Is there a way to get out of being stunned etc? Some players and NPC’s move around so fast I struggle to keep up and lose my target! It’s easier when they aren’t moving lol but that’s not going to happen in a pvp environment.

Is the best way to upgrade my daggers to keep questing? From what I understand my character is better to have two daggers and not other weapons?

Thanks guys!

Hi  I haven’t see you online since. We just haven’t been logged at the same time.

I’m online now if you want to meet up and chat.

I think we all find ourselves with a straggle of quests following us, that we never got around to completing. The best policy is to finish off everything you can find in the zone you’re in, and ignore or Abandon the quests in the zones you left behind, unless there is some specific reason you want to do a specific quest.

Chapters are not relevant. They are just for record-keeping purposes towards earning the achievement for completing the zone.

Getting out of being stunned … some classes have an ability that helps with that, but not rogues - you rogues are supposed to be the stunners, not the stunned. :stuck_out_tongue:

You can buy a PvP or heirloom trinket that has that ability:

As for daggers, I thought you had decided to do the Token thing and buy heirlooms? Did that not go ok?

Log on to BettleNet if you’re still around an we can chat.

Hi!

I should be playing later today and definitely tomorrow.

I didnt know that about being stunned! I guess I need to keep practising!!!

The tokens worked and I found a mailbox and they came through  yay! Bit lost about heirlooms though and how they help and where to go to buy them. I’m reading a guide now and your help looks like I have to go to undercity but still figuring out how they equip and what’s best etc.

Another query is getting about still - if I’m in Silvermoon I’ll travel to undercity, then do I start looking for quests there? I can’t seem to find any in my current areas expect the ones that require more players!

though if you’re doing PvP, you might want to equip the stun-breaking trinket in one slot instead.

Also don’t worry too much about the enchants. Elemental Force on your weapons is nice at low levels, and usually quite cheap at the AH. The rest matter a lot less.

What quest did you run into in Un’goro that requires more players? I’m still a bit baffled about that. Also, if a quest says it required 3 players, it usually doesn’t; you can probably solo it, though it might be harder than average.

Let me check about the quest. There was one where I have a spirit guide with me but the boss seems impossible to beat!!

I’ve been reading up and trying to get to grips with the heirlooms so I’ll see what I can purchase, these can be rings etc so do I keep those on and don’t use any new items I acquire through quests?

Thanks!

That was a lot to take in!

I said I’d write something about finding space for your keybindings.

The first thing you need to do is enable all your action bars.

Hit Esc to get the Menu up, then choose Interface, and tick all your Action Bars on as in this screenshot

https://imgur.com/8yc3RtQ

You now have more places to put things.

https://imgur.com/YrWs0fo

links to an image of my rogue’s basic keys in Assassination, which doesn’t display well on this page. Now, I need to emphasise that I barely play Rogue, and only tried Assassination for about two days, when I was inspired by a great scenario for Assassination Rogues at level 100, so if you want to see what a real rogue does, you want to look somewhere else, but it gives you an idea.

My Shadowstep, which is not shown there, is bound to the ` key, which is to the left of the 1 key, and I have placed that on one of my right hand bars.

My basic method is to bind my abilities to 1-0, and then I assign Ctrl-1 through Ctrl-0 for the upper bar. It seems more people prefer Alt rather than Ctrl as a modifier for this bar, but use whatever is most comfortable for you.

My interrupt (Kick for rogues) is on 8, which is a terrible place to put it, too far out,. but that’s where I put it when I started, and I’m used to it now. I did a lot of hours in music training when I was young ago, so I am used to long stretches.

I then put my mounts, potions, food or item uses on the upper bar to the right of that, and I use Shift modifiers for those, like Shift-1 to Shift-0

I mostly use my far-right-hand bars for things I won’t use in combat, (Shadowstep is an exception in this case), like buffs, poisons, lesser used mounts, hearthstone, and so things I click rather than keybind, because I’m never in a hurry to use them.

As you see, I have my main attacks near 1

  1. Mutilate
  2. Garrote
  3. Rupture
  4. Envenom
  5. Kidney Shot
  6. Fan of Knives

and then my interrupts

  1. Blind
  2. Kick

and on the upper level, on what I use as Ctrl keys I have avoidance and healing

Ctrl-1. Stealth
Ctrl-2. Crimson Vial
Ctrl-3. Feint
Ctrl-4. Vanish
Ctrl-5. Evasion
Ctrl-6. Tricks of the Trade

Ctrl-7. is my Big Cooldown - Vendetta

You will see that in Stealth your bars change. On my Stealth bar I have

  1. Mutilate
  2. Garotte
  3. Pick Pocket
  4. Cheap Shot
  5. Sap
  6. Distract
  7. Kick

The way I have organised these may not work for you. That’s fine. Everyone develops their own preferred keys and methods. This is just a start for you to get the idea.
