PTR Spoiler/Discussion Thread (Part 1)

i think the whole argument re: Sylvanas being hated because she’s a woman breaks down when you compare her to Nathanos who despite having done far less dodgy things than sylvanas was fervently wanted dead and people were jumping up and down, banging the drums and screaming poggers when a woman (tyrande) killed him

people don’t hate the recent story development of sylvanas because she’s a woman, people hate it because the story is bad. simple as

Personally I would be more fine with this.

Sylvanas has never been a particularly nice/good character in terms of alignment, and while they flipped flopped all over the place with her, they did pretty firmly settle on her being a villain during BfA, and the character did do alot of crimes/bad deeds.

What doesn’t sit right with me is the various ways they seemingly want to redeem her by making it out to be not a big deal.

I’ve never liked characters doing bad stuff and getting away without consequences, and it sends a really bad message when the narrative is “do bad things, be forgiven bcs reasons” (Prime reason now being “because it wasn’t really me”.

And as I said before, it’s a very bad look that they are pushing HARD on this narrative that the night elves/Tyrande are bad for wanting justice or revenge. Ever since the lawsuit, they have trippled down on this and it looks sketchy.

Utterly wrong. For the most part, Nathanos hate gets expressed in conjunction with Sylvanas hate. He gets called a simp and beta male by the same people who hate Sylvanas. He’s the worst counterexample you could bring.

It’s a situation where alot of people have actual grievances with the character/writing, but it gets piled over by angry Gamers™ who use it as an excuse to be really misogynistic.

I don’t hate Nathanos because he’s a “simp” or “beta male”. I hate him because he’s a jerk and acts like he’s my new step dad and I’m too old to be calling a new man daddy outside of a consensual relationship.

Glad he’s gone.

It’s hard to pin down someone as a genuine misogynist when the internet lets you say anything with very little repercussions for the most part. With that said, I err on the side of most of it being people living way too vicariously through the game’s tribalism and taking - what is essentially, a pulpy western fantasy - seriously to an unhealthy degree.

Then again, it all just reminds me of that meme with the little chihouhua smiling and then looking angry as hell. [Insert character/race] for the smiling one and [insert opposing character/race] for the angry, teeth bared one.

If you feverishly despise something in a fictional setting to the point you get militant about it? Take a break my dudes. :peace_symbol:

no its actually the perfect example to use because the argument was that “ahh but some people hate her because she’s a woman rather than her actions” but then you literally point out that actually that happens to every character, regardless of their sex- Sometimes even because simply their association to other characters

I hate Nathanos because he acts like he’s top dog on everything but he mostly just yells a lot and freaks out. Or like that time the player tells him they have acquired the Heart of Azeroth and he says “yeah watever” and tells you to go to Zuldazar.

Like, my guy, if we strap this thing into a tank it can probably cleave the Eastern Kingdoms in half. What are you doing?

what an absolutely based man

His job, obvs. Warchief says ‘send the champion to Zandalar’, honourable Nathanos follows the Warchief’s commands.

I now choose to believe the Horde lost the war because Nathanos followed his orders too well.

Good soldiers follow orders.

They can throw in some story points about him and Mayla growing as high chiefs here and there easy enough. It doesn’t need to be sudden.
With that said, he does act… its just a tad slow.

No, the argument was that hate against gets expressed in a blatantly misogynistic manner. Sylvanas fans criticize her story arch. You would be surprised how many are unhappy with the new cinematic.

He… he really didn’t pat you on your back and tell you what a good boy you are? How cruel.

Never liked Nathanos because I loathe boasting/characters like him in general. Also gave me big Kai Leng vibes in that he couldn’t back it up at any point unless the storywriter for that part decided so(by just having him suddenly just be able to be be fine).

A braggy/douchebag character can be fine, but I personally atleast want to see them whine and sulk when they do get knocked to their feet. It becomes infuriating when they still act like nothing happened.

Nathanos is basically Monty Python’s Black Knight, but played completely straight-faced. Only that he shows up more than once. And some of the times after he suddenly lost all limbs, he gets magic powers for no reasons and succeeds at whatever he was doing anyway because the director said so.

Tbh, I would be too proud to whine in front of a gnome as well.

I think the most frustrating part of the Exploring Azeroth books (not that I’ve ranted about them enough already). Is Blizzard have essentially spat on any form of world building outside of their monorail story. Everything is static and the same to support this rather insipid tripe.

Sean Copeland had very little room to write anything that wasn’t curated, according to his wife.

“Anyone who doesn’t know how game books are written that there is a certain amount of misplaced vitriol here. Sean’s title at work now holds the responsibility of writing books where in previous years it did not. However, he still doesn’t create lore. He and and other writers work closely with producers and editors in their department as well as the game team leads and writers. Game teams are where worlds, races, and histories are created. Any writer from quest text to manga to books must work closely with these teams who have the final say in the project.”

He was a more obnoxious Mutley, fairly indifferent on him. Would rather have had him develop into something more than that like Dark Mirror hinted at but eh. Danuser’s insert lmao.

When it looked like he was a bit hesitant with Sylvanas’s orders, I thought “hey, he may be a turd, but he has a small bit of moral left.” but it turned out he was all for it.

We hear you
and we’re listening.

There’s no point buying the book. It’s just a repeat of the status-quo of the Cataclysm world map. Even the Northwatch are still in Durotar lmao. They did the exact same nonsense in the BFA mission tables. You can feel corporates wormy little tendrils seeping into the writing.

Also I will never stop liking Nathanos and only the bullied fear him.
