Sexism, ANTI-LGBTQ+ and Skin-Based Racism has no place in RP in 2021

Exactly. This is how you do it. You have an idea and build on it! Black gay tailorer? Absolutly fine. From there on you can keep on expaning on what is his tailoring stile, what does he like, what does he dislike.

All i say is a charakter should not end at “Hi i’m John,i’m black and gay.”

But this doesnt happen outside of these discussions.

Well lucky for you I’m pretty sure like 100% of the characters don’t. It’s what you perceive the character as what does.

The black and gay tailorer may have a ton more to them, but for many (bigots especially) they stop seeing past sexuality and race.

The thing is that 99.9% of LGBTQ+ characters roleplayed on the server are far more than just their orientation or gender identity – but however much or little their queerness plays into their characterisation it will ALWAYS be described as ‘defining their character’ by 'phobes because it’s all they see and all they want to target.

But do you put it in your TRP “currently” or one of your “at first glance”?

TL/DR the main character is a mary sue / characterless avatar but a lot of critique is deflected with the comment “you are just picking on a female lead”.

Scrap that. Rey doesn’t get close to female leads like Ripley, Connor or the Bride.

Urgh. I hate it so much. Granted, there are instances I’ve seen of characters pretty much just being somebody representing a gender or sexuality and I think it’d be pretty difficult to argue otherwise (I’ve found void elves tend to attract these sorts of players from time to time)

But even then it’s biggest crime is being perhaps a little tone-deaf to the setting, especially when you consider that somebody might be engaging with a character who’s primary focus is to explore a queer identity because they feel they can’t explore such IRL.

There are many ‘online critics’ who hate her precisely because she’s a woman though - in ways they’d never bother to raise if she had been a male character.

It’s a common nerd culture trope; take legitimate feedback on a story / character and turn it into something with a gross agenda (something they like to accuse the ‘liberals’ of - projection much?)

I know that well, but the mary sue critique is 100% legitimate. I grew up with Star Wars; i watched Luke train with the lightsaber, fail, train more, leave Dagobah early, fail miserably, then train even more to finally be able to match Darth Vader.

Whether it’s a man, woman, Hutt, Stormtrooper, Jar-jar, droid, Mandalorian or armchair I’d be pissed at any character that picks up a lightsaber and randomly beats a trained Sith. And that’s basically the bulk of the legitimate critique against Rey.

TLOU2 turned its actual criticism into just trans and gay bashing in the same way.

I’m sure you would be, don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to make accusations about your personal response to the movies.

But the amount of people who loathe her precisely for her gender, with the mary sue criticism an after-thought to justify a feminine presence intruding on their space opera nostalgia, it starts to shift my general perception.

To be fair. Rey never fought an actual sith and only managed to hold her own against an injured Kylo Ren in the first movie. That changed in the later movies of course but that was after her training.

Yes, the smiling part has become a character trait so it’s in his first glances. So are his version of a wedding ring, but that’s not explicitly told. My first glances are very concise to be conversation starters.

I should add a LGBTQ+ friendly flag, though!

maybe she rolled a nat20 / the Sith a nat 1 heh :smirk:

I don’t really agree with that much. Contrast the critique she receives compared to Finn. Finn’s character is nice, likeable and develops. Boyega did a wonderful job as an actor; the back of his palm conveys more emotions than rey’s whole character arc.

For Finn, it is usually obvious that the critique is there because of racism. And it is far less prominent than the critique against Rey.

I have run into those charakters trust me. On the other hand i have played with charakters i didnt know the sexuality of because they don’t bother to put it in there flags and all cause its something personal and they don’t have a sign over there head that marks them as gay/lesbian/Bi/what ever else.

What i try to say if your Druid is gay thats totally cool with me and good for you. I definetly won’t shame you for that and i still would definetly love to RP with you. All i want is to not get reminded every 2 seconds about it. Hell if you post any charakter traits every 2 seconds i would be anoyed by it. I have a group of friends where we make fun of one of us cause his charakter keept constantly winking at everybody to the point where we would be sitting in voice chat and when a new customer came up to him we would say “Ouh ouh here it comes he is gonna wink again!”

“Who are you?”

“Ray…”

“Ray who?”

“Ray’d Shadow Legends”

Question; have you seen any such roleplayers on Horde side?

I generally have a better experience there due to the lack of Stormwind RPers. Who shouldn’t be taken as representative of anything.

Well no but thats mainly because i come from a german realm where Horde is pretty mutch dead.

Also while we’re on diversity in media and Star Wars, let’s talk about why Emperor Palpatine is a body positive icon and a hero - after all, the man looks like a shaved ball, but that never stopped him from achieving his dreams.

Don’t let your appearance hold you back folks; it’s what’s on the inside that counts.

Whats inside your undead?

The twisting nether itself.
