Thinking about trying to get back into Vanilla WoW but not sure how active it is.
Would SOM or Classic Era be a better choice? What would be the best servers to pick and how active is the game? I’ve just both a few times during TBC and they seemed quiet then but not sure if there’s been an increase since then?
Neither is a good choice at the moment.
Blizzard not interested in a no changes vanilla fresh either, so it’s back to square one for the vanilla fans.
There is a new private server on the way (a google search will get you the discord for it).
Sad state of affairs when we have to go unofficial again.
I have never and I won’t ever play on a private servers. I want to keep my characters like forever - that’s exactly why I play on the Era servers.
Era servers are the best choice now. But it’s not for everyone.
I understand, I played on the era server recently, have my classic toons cloned there. Fine if you want to raid when you need nothing.
I levelled a warrior and can’t get a dungeon group anywhere, not one. Cant even get attuned on it.
So I have 3 characters that need nothing and one that needs everything with no means to even attune it to the raids.
To be succesful the server/s need to be progressive.
Blizzard don’t want to do it, so private servers are now the only way to get that experience.
Wow instead I joined a guild and people helped me attune, socializing what a mistery.
I have joined a guild there, they still do attunement runs for alts.
It’s hard to socialise solo. Perhaps you are in the pvp cluster, I hear it’s slightly more populated.

Playing horde on mirage raceway. I’m to old to waste time on world pvp.
ERA Firemaw cluster has enough pop to do low level dungeons and attunement runs…
There are leveling guilds specifically tailored for that → e.g.: Dungeon Delvers (Alliance) or Warpath (horde) among others…
Give it a try. I find SoM to exacerbate the rat race that MMOs inherently create → Shorter timeframe and higher difficulty attract a very hardcore type of player. If you have tons of time to invest it may be for you. Additionally, SoM chars will eventually be migrated to ERA so maybe you can level up there with more people and then join ERA for later raiding/pvping.
ERA is devoid of the rat race. Theres no interest in it outside of a few pvp rankers who have to do it because of how the system works. The rest is basically do it at your own tempo. Log in today, maybe log in 3 days later. Characters will permanently stay as well as content, so thats that.
Most people seem to be attracted by the hype of the moment type of server. Today is TBC, tomorrow will be WOTLK. TBC will then die, guaranteed.
Again it depends on what you do want. ERA pop is low but steadily growing. It is for the most part though, a different type of community. We love it, others will not even consider it.
I’m pretty sure, that you can move your characters to classic era after SoM is over.
Yes you can - actually will because this is where all SoM characters go - Era or delete is the choice.
But the experience before SoM ends is what we’re discussing here 
This would change nothing. Era will not become more popular untill whole Classic trinity (Classic-TBC-Wrath) will be complete. From there on only we can talk about if Blizzard will be able to keep Classic audience at all, unless they go free 2 play on Era realms.
Era is dog and making a character there is a waste of time. Hopefully SoM characters can go wrath rather than they graveyard.
Currently playing on som and it’s slowly dying or is it just summer. I would suggest joining one of the wotlk new servers once they are launched. Can’t beat the feeling of a fresh server.
Yeah, being on a realm that dies after 100 days, I’ll pass.
Noticed the same. Summertime sadness hitting hard on the SoM. Doesnt affect me tho, i play casually anyways and waiting eagerly for FRESH Wotlk. Got plans allready for rest of the year WoW. 
Wotlk Fresh up to as far as its fun → Main chars from TBC 70-80 → Some SoM and Classic checking if there comes changes and end of the year hits the Retail, which i think will be fun for 2 month and then im back to WOTLK.

Era is well and alive. You will be positively surprised by giving it a chance. If its not for you all good. We will continue being there in case you see its worth. As I said earlier, if SoM is better now, chars will be transfered later to Era so that may also be a good option for you.
As for the cockroach, Ill show up whenever you “contribute” to a discussion. I can’t help it. I know you share the feeling, hence why you are here every time.
