Yesterday night i came back home and decided to level my third character before season hits on wednesday. I usually level my mage up second in row but this time i decided to level a devourer DH first and then my dear mage. I was always a huge frost fan, since Cataclysm and what actually made me love frost is the unique shatter playstyle, which once you figure out how it works and the endless possibilities behind it, both in PvP and PvE you just can’t let go. To my disappointment, frost became a basic b#@tch, like it came out of an MMO like lost arc or some s@$t. An once really thought out to the last detail spec, to something completely basic and disgusting. There is no coherence between the spell combination and the “freezing” debuff which is applied with frostbolt (Aka Glacial Spike lmao and WHY??) and flurry is tedious af. The fingers of frost procs are simply useless because you actually never need them and they don’t provide a damage boost. The freezing stacks on the enemy target are almost always capped to 20, unless you haven’t casted a single spell of the above. On top of that i was trying to find the offensive cooldown, commonly known as icy veins… Yeah nah. What the actual f….. A level 90 frost mage does not have an offensive cooldown. I guess ray of frost is pretty much an all rounder now, which also changes, after casting it to glacial storm or whatever it’s called. I just want to say i am sorry for mage mains. Hope you do love arcane or fire as much as frost, because you are gonna need something to keep you going in the game. Personally I cannot understand, how and why you take something perfect and turn it into garbage that nobody asked for. If I personally mained mage, i would already be looking for another game to play for the next few years.
Edit: I am still extremely disappointed as i am gonna miss one of my favorite specs in the game forever. Unless they rollback the talents and passives back to what they were in TWW, i am afraid this is the end of frost mage.

That said, the rest of the post is correct; freezing is a fundamentally flawed system they’ve just removed from another spec and ruined what was already a very fun spec - which frost was before these changes
All we can do is keep complaining until they realise that whoever proposed freezing is just wrong and revert all the midnight frost mage changes back to how it was at the end of war within
I was hyped going into Midnight on my Frost Mage that I’ve loved since at least Legion expansion. Only to be gutted in Pre-Patch when I got to play the pruned and ruined spec and class I used to love. I benched my mage and mained Evoker TWW Frost Mage was fun and the old Shatter system made a lot more sense and the rotation hade choices. Now it’s incredibly spammy and repeatable (which was said about the previous rotation, I guess now we know it could be worse). Comet Storm behind RoF was also an extremely bad decision.
I dont do dungeons, only pvp. Frostmage in pvp is very fun and dynamic with the spec as it is now with 2 ray of frost, cometstrom is garbage in pvp in 2 ways, 1: is its hard too hit the target and 2: you have to dump it to use ray of frost again (2e charge). Maby if you wanna do random teamfights for nothing its good too dump in the middle of the pack.. I can see it being good in pve.
ray of frost is the worst pvp spell ever, everytime insta interrupt so is like a 0.1 sec ray ¨it supost to be our best spell´´ also they increase shimmer cd and prune displacement, blast wave, block healing, sifting power, icy veins… now you have to play mele as a mage and hardcast when every class have perma interrupts, cc, stuns, gameplay really suck on pvp, is the worst mage design ever was overnerfed and they gonna remove our second charge of ray of frost and iceicles don´t generate out of combat so we can´t open with glacial spike…
Don’t care about the dps and you are obviously talking about PvE, since dps is irrelevant in PvP. The utility frost mages used to have with shatter and all types of freezes, ice nova, freeze after glacial spike, freeze from the water elemental and OG shatter ofc, gave players a wide range of choices in gameplay. Now it’s just like playing a cheap frost mage version in another MMO. Meta and DPS vary from patch to patch so it’s a dumb arguement. Something great had died here today
The new version of frost mage is great in pve in my opinion. It’s cooldown is ray of frost, for spellslinger it activates splinterstorm and for frostfire you use it to build up shatter then burst them all with a powerful comet storm. Icy viens was just a haste buff, it was a terrible cooldown. Ray isn’t a tradional cooldown but its interesting.
Old frost had a problem in pve where it’s shatter mechanic was great in open world and pvp but in dungeons and raids frost nova and ice nova couldn’t freeze luitenant mobs and bosses.
You can’t complain about it being basic now, old frost in end game pve was just hit the glowy button but press frostbolt first. There’s a lot of depth to it now, a lot of decision making for minor gains which allows skill expression.
They could add some pvp talents to bring back the feel of the old frost mage I suppose. Add in a ‘frozen’ mechanic while rooted by your spells.
