Is arcane a lot harder than frost in dungeons with mana managment, certain skills for burn phase and the need for being in melee range for their aoe taken in account if you wnat to play them decently enough or you think arcane in this case is still simpler/not that much harder than frost?
Like I said, I doubt we can tell you much more that is actually useful. There isn’t a huge difference in difficulties between specs in lower content, and different people relate better to different things. With Arcane, some people grok mana management instinctively, and barely have to think about it. To others, it’s as arcane (boom boom) as partial differential equations (then again, some people find PDEs intuitive).
At this stage, you’re just grinding metal by asking more questions in text. We’ve weeded it down to a shortlist. Go check out YouTube, or try out the specs. If you have bought a version of the game with a boost, you can make a Class Trial character at high level to see how it performs when near max.
I know I’m a little late to this, but I’ve just levelled an arcane mage (arcane is the only mage spec I’ve found myself enjoying) and I can answer your mana question.
For most of the levelling process, I did need to watch my mana during dungeons. Arcane has a 6 second channel that refills the mana bar (I think it’s on a 2.5 minute CD) and I was using that on CD as well as using mana gems. I don’t think I ever had to stop to drink, though.
At some point while levelling through Shadowlands (50 - 60), the mana ‘problem’ just… went away. I stopped paying it any attention, and I pretty much stopped needing to. I had initially taken the ‘Enlightened’ talent at 50, which helps with mana regen, and I thought it was due to that, however I still didn’t have any problems with mana when I switched talents.
As for needing to be in melee range… that’s a difficult question for me to answer because I’m usually a melee player, so I tend to naturally get in melee range. I do like to use Arcane Explosion on AOE (it feels good to press), and that has a 10 yard range, so requires close to melee range. But I think that’s the only spell that needs you to be in close.
Personally, I find arcane mage easier than ele shaman (which I’ve also just levelled to 60). My experience was that arcane suffered less from being forced to move during burst windows than ele, but that may have been because my playstyle puts me in close enough that I could use Arcane Explosion to generate an Arcane Charge if I wasn’t able to stand and cast.
