I thought DF was going to be great, I can do random BGs whenever I want and get geared that way. However instead I need to spend all my time in solo shuffle queues on all my alts in order to get a reasonable amount of conquest and cap vault. I spend more time waiting than actually playing the game because of the severe healer shortage. This is awful.

Have u tried lvl up healer instead this post ? It solves alittle bit problem u described.

I don’t enjoy healer. If the answer is I need to play something I don’t enjoy to play the game then that’s not good design.

Which is why they should just either
(A) allow us to spend honor to buy conquest at say 10-1
OR
(B) only have one pvp currency, and reward it differentially e.g. rated win>rated loss> unrated win> unrated loss or some such, allowing all players to gear doing what they like

That is how I geared both of my mains for the most part. You don’t “have to” play rated PvP to get the best gear. You might get an advantage on Tier Sets from the weekly, which depending on your class might be really good. But in the end, you will get the best gear for PvP without having to play rated PvP at all 
Caping conquest cap is really easy with all the WPvP Quests/Weeklies and stuff.
I’d rather go:
Farm chests and get the pieces from World PvP set and do some random or epic bg until you are equipped if you don’t like solo shuffle.
I never did solo shuffle because I can’t stand the concept.

You have to do Random BGs to get better conq gear to be competive in Solo Shuffle and get the Rated PvP rewards.
u r not forced to soloshuffle at all.
maybe if you only have one char, log in every day and win your dailies without trying 10 bgs before you actually win.
no capping is not easy like this because it is not in your own hands to win bgs. especially epic bgs you are at the mercy of the group. sometimes you can easy waste 5h rpics and still did not get a win
The way Blizz gives out conquest makes no sense at all, The absolute hardest content you can do in wow which is random BG give s the least amount of Conquest.
If you dissagree that randmon BG is the absolute hardest content to get conquest, please put up a timer and watch hours played from 0-5000 conquest in random BG and then try solo shuffle or 2v2.
jsut because one says “RATED” it gives more conquest, but it does not matter at all, because everyone is caped at the same conquest 
IMHO with WPvP alone you can cap easily (at least if you play every week).
Does the Horde also get the “kill 25 enemy-faction players”-weekly?
That quest + sparks weekly quest + the WPvP WQ in that sparks zone.
Pretty sure you have more than half of the weekly conquest alone through that + you get an epic WPvP item (sparks) which has also itemlvl 421 in PvP. Add the Air-Supply boxes and Bounty kill rewards that you may get (or not) while you do the WPvP WQs during the week…
To be honest, it has never been this easy to get BiS-gear for PvP (unless you liked Ashran in WoD).
At least the statement “Why are we forced to do solo shuffle” is utterly exaggerated. If you don’t want to do rated content anyway, you don’t need to have the BiS gear as fast as possible (The only reason why you would need the weekly vault, to get gear faster).
We are able to get the BiS gear for PvP (including Tierset) without doing a single rated PvP game, you know how much better the gearing system for “casual” players has become?

If you want to equip a new Twink, and do that in a single week, then yes, you need to spam random BGs or rated content (which would suck because of no gear) and you are “at the mercy of the group”. But that is ok IMHO, since it is you who wants to progress fast, there must be some work on your side too 
If you get good groups (you can make it easier by joining BG communities and/or play with friends that bring their geared characters) you can be fully honor geared within a day
well I don’t do world pvp because it always was too stupid for me to hunt players with a raid.
but aside from getting conquest points, you still need to cap your vault because that alone is worth 525 - 1800 points per week. And this is a biggie. Conquest points isnt that bad because you can cap later as it will be added but the vault… once missed, you are behind
For the sake of quests: you can do that only in 5 man groups, not in raids.
WPvP is besides gearing one of the best improvements in WoW for PvPers^^ to just discard this possibility is not a good idea…
yeah, but that only means you are fully conquest equipped faster. Which is not so important IMHO, as far as you are full honor geared in the meanwhile (I played like this since the start of the xPac and never felt behind just because of that couple of itemlevels). Also the gem slots or extra stats, I don’t think that those 1-2% bonus in stats is that meaningful, if you view yourself as casual player anyway

You’re not forced into anything you crybaby. You can farm conquest in any rated game mode. Since you enjoy BGs so much, queue up for a rated BG group or make one yourself, since you’re probably one of those guys who never want to be targeted and just do random things, spam their pve rotation on players and win anyway.
