I’ve been playing through Midnight because you get voidlight marl instead of rep for your second playthrough and I noticed.
The Ogre’s are like… maybe the size of a Tauren? I remember one of the main reasons people say Ogre’s can’t be a playable race is they’re too big, but right here i’m seeing ogre’s that are a similar height to my Dracthyr.
This does also bring up one question for me, what the hell is with the heights on Ogres? In Midnight there’s Ogre’s that are Tauren sized, and I go to Exiles reach they’re about the height of a building, but also on Exile’s Reach there’s an Ogre the size of a Tauren during the Rogue special quest.
That’s crazy that they’re that varied in size, gotta have Ogre’s getting real self conscious about their heights when they’re trying to look tough and they’ve got Crunk over there who’s 15ft tall
As got mentioned they are in fact around tauren and male Draenai size. Its just enemies and NPCs in content usually are depicted larger. Hence the “too large” impression. The Zandalari in the throne if Thunder are also huge in comparison to what we play as now.
I mean they did change it to “Body 1” and “Body 2” seems like a good enough excuse to just have Body 1 be a 1 headed Ogre and Body 2 be a 2 headed Ogre.
I think the only “real” reasson why they are not palyable could be the lack of female Ogre models?
I mean we never seen or heard them
And maybe because the common Ogres never were portrayed as… bright
Dumber than a Peon so to speak (wich is strange, since the had an Empire and strong magic and quite a navy made out stone)
Mostly in a loincloth or a toga
I guess it was easier to make new (and unecesarry - well except the Vulpera, basically the first non-variant race since god knows when) race than make the Ogre 'workable"
The mysterious island of Ogrezonia is said to be inhabited by giant female ogres who are rumored to perform horrible rituals on men who happen upon their island
Not to mention, accoring to the Bash Ale: “No self-respecting ogre goes into battle sober”
Immagine the backlash…
The funny thing is… with the Titanic and Arcane heritage, Ogres would be ideal members of the Alliance
They not really joined the Horde out of sheer joy you now!
On the main universe, the Gorian Empire wasn’t the best of friends of the orcs, after the little incident with the Throne of Elements ignited a great war between the ogres and the orcs, and the Red Pox, basically a biological/magical weapon designed by the Ogres wiped out countless Orcs, but they ultemately lost Goria, their capital to the Orcs… but from the Orcs part, that was more of a pyrrhic victory.
The empire was eventually destroyed during the rise of the Old Horde. During the orcs’ war against the draenei, most ogres joined the Horde. That is, except for the ogres of their capital Highmaul, and Blackhand wanted the last holdouts dead. After the orcs destroyed Shattrath, the Warsong clan and Twilight’s Hammer clan went to Highmaul, with their chieftains Grommash Hellscream and Cho’gall (the latter an ogre himself, exiled from Highmaul) also part of the siege. Eager to exact vengeance, Cho’gall personally killed Imperator Mar’gok. With the powers of fel and the Void, he bound Mar’gok to his throne and burned him alive
On AU Draenor, Imperator Mar’gok to aligned himself with the orcs to ensure the Gorion Empire’s continued survival when the Iron Horde made its debut…
Either version, the Ogres who remained, had no choice, but join or die.
They are survivors of the wars of the Orcs and tho’ they have a certain worldview (like Coliseum fights, slavery, etc, Roman Empire style) they have more in common with the Draenei and the Humans of Azeroth (both suffered from the hands of the Orcs and were almost destroyed) than the Horde races.
We just got used to think Ogre = Horde
I have to admit I’ve never heard anyone say the height is an issue. However…
Appearance and culture
A typical ogre.
Ogres are large, heavily built humanoids with round ears and a single horn on their forehead. Their skin tones range in color from shades of peach to red, to deep blues and ashen black. Male ogre heights range from 6’ to 12’[44] with an average of 8’[6] while the females stand at anywhere between 6’ and 10’.[8][45] The smallest of ogre children tend to stand at around 5 feet tall.[8]
Over 20 years back they were bigger, way bigger. When vanilla launched and was simply “world of warcraft” there were only big ogres, and they were big cos in previous games they were big. It would be hard to scale everything and make them fit everywhere like rest of the races.
True, nowdays they are a bit smaller (some at least) but it wasn’t the case backdays.
Mind you - people were also into Demon Hunter(We got them ion Legion), Necromancers (We got DKs instead), playable High Elvs (we got BE in TBC) and so on.
Another thing was that devs though that players won’t be interested in playing as ogres as mentioned above.
It’s probably also because Ogres would be a right pain to fit armour on, male Pandaren stretch textures past the breaking point at times, imagine having to stretch item models and textures to fit Ogres…
And brother, I have gotten stuck on some doorways on the Alliance housing isle as my Lightforged Draenei here.
If I can’t get into a cellar with a vendor because my Draenei is too tall to fit through the stairway down to it, your Ogre won’t fit in many more places as well.
Besides that… People like you may want Ogres. Doesn’t mean others want to see you as an Ogre running around because it would mess with their experience of the game as well.
Don’t misunderstand me, I don’t care personally. Problem is, playable races need to appeal not just to those that play them but also to those that see them while not playing them.
And we all know people are incredibly looks-driven in games.
To be the most clear here… If it looks ugly, people don’t want it usually.
Ogres’s and Ogre Mages were playable as part of the Horde in the TTRPG…which is non canon but they were playable.
Of course printing a few words and rules is a tiny bit easier and faster done then making a new mesh, skeleton and a metric tone of armor for the new body xD
Game has tauren rogues sneaking trying pick pocket our valuables. Regards immersion, high mountain tauren is still one of the most durable race, I see a lot of tauren mages, warlocks and the like constantly in PvP, this breaks my immersion of wizards as much as I hate tauren rogues
All I see is high mountain tauren mages and warlocks all day in shuffle, my immersion could not be more gone. Ogre mage or lock would actually fit the game Imo better than high mountain taurens.
