Im starting to think there either issue with gpu drivers or chipset drivers or both, i am just waiting to see if some one also has this with Intel cpu and AMD gpu or with AMD chipset and cpu but Nvidia gpu

edit: at a 3 hour session system freezes / tdr happen for me at 2 or 4 hour mark usually but never after 6 hours i stopped running wallpaper engine and keep my web browser closed and at minimal tabs and keep an eye out on my pagefile usage cos so far if seen it at 32 gb usage or near it when it freezes and if set my page file limit to 32 gb max, i can only speculate so far on whats wrong.
But if i managed to play for 15 hours before non stop no freezes then there something i am running now that causes it that i was not running at the time when i did not freeze i suspect so far.

For those having it as well how frequently does it happen every 2 4 hours 6 hours or only once a day multiple times a day etc ? i keep timer running like stopwatch just to see how frequently it happens.
I may be imagining things but it happens when pagefile is nearly 32 gb if set a 32 gb pagefile limit im not sure if this is coincidence.
I stopped running wallpaper engine as well keep discord closed in background and close firefox before tabbing back to game, as well as keeping steam closed cos it almost feels like its a memory leak, i wonder how game behaves without a page file setup in windows probably not adviceable but i wonder if i see my ram usage go up with time instead without pagefile instead of seeing pagefile increase bigger and bigger, because my guess is once pagefile is full it eventually dumps a lot of data in memory and when my system memory can’t handle it freezes, but i can only speculate so far even if so why does this so far only look like its happening to AMD users.

i wish i could pin this to a hardware issue already so i can replace the bad part and just be done, but if others have the issue its unlikely to be one, i just want a easy fix.

My brother has the same problem right now, it started with WoW right after a cutscene started yesterday it crashed once (or freezing), today it did again in WOW just as he logged and turned in a quest, but to the point everything just kept crashing his PC. Sadly I don’t believe in coincidences and believe it’s related with WoW as well. Just trying to reinstall Windows or rather reset pc and pray it works…

What hardware he has also full AMD rig with AMD cpu and GPU or just AMD gpu with intel cpu or AMD cpu with Nvidia gpu or Intel with Nvidia gpu ?

Im trying to figure out if its driver related i think its because AMD gpu drivers.
Especially when having apps active in background that use hardware acceleration like browsers or apps like steam or discord.

I dont have issues in other games, but other games i play i dont alt tab at all, while in wow its really luxery i abuse a lot checking forum while being in game etc.

If its not a driver issue then it can only be memory leak and then pagefile ramping up to be bigger and bigger is clear indicator then of when it can freeze, anyway its annoying if something causes it there should be reason why it happens, maybe happens more when going thru many loading screens or when pagefile gets full etc anyway just speculation at this point on what could be causing these problems.

Its worth doing bug report in radeon software if having AMD gpu just to be sure and link this thread and many other threads of people having same issue.

I believe Intel with a Nvidia (?) graphics card, Rog strix rtx 3080. After I posted that and he tried resetting the PC, it crashed in the midst of reinstalling, afterwards it didn’t give any screen anymore, only a black screen of death, couldn’t even open up Windows Repair etc etc. Looks like the graphics card also gave an error code so it looks like something fried the graphics card somehow, presumably because of WoW since EVERYTHING started with WoW. He even updated the drivers and Windows yesterday after the first initial crash.

Luckily still 2 years of warranty on the graphics card, but holy moly…

I remember quite bunch of times when i did not realize MPO being broken i would install gpu driver i get blackscreen in a really rare case those blackscreens persist after reboot, perhaps something was blocking the display from getting display cos it came back every time.
MPO is currently heavily broken for AMD users, and its almost as if Microsoft broke MP perhaps Nvidia is suffering from it as well.

That may mean the gpu did not die either if my story adds up to yours, usually by the time it got into windows it recovered or after another reset.

Now i always disable MPO unless i hear AMD acknowledge issues with MPO and are getting close to fixing it.

MPO = multi-plane overlays it bassicly renders everything via an overlay Nvidia has support for 4 planes AMD 3 currently.

I created a ticket, but i cant say i have much faith of having a solution in the midst of the expansion launch :frowning:
Issue ID: #86093709

Im narrowing down on what causes my system to freeze either bugged c states or gpu driver being more broken then originally thought meaning hardware acceleration being enabled in other apps breaking it and some apps impacting it, i am leaning more towards bugged c states cos the game uses a lot more cpu now then before so old c states that may be programmed no longer work which could be done at driver level least for AMD cpu’s.

If just bombarded my system with tabs in firefox with hardware acceleration turned off anywhere i need to test with hardware acceleration at some point.

Also could be vram memory leak still c state bug does exist and is technically possible before anyone else, its gonna take a long time i suspect to be 100% sure to avoid placebo’s perhaps it could be a windows bug as well, i am sitting idle now on 22% cpu usage on my 5950x 20% is surely wow

Anyway i got a 7 hour run so far the longer i can mange to run wow without freezes before end of the day the more likely i am closer to narrowing down real cause.

Hardware acceleration being cause is also very likely since most so far that reported issues like this have AMD systems.

edit: if wanna try control freezes aka try testing with c states off and hardware acceleration off in any app discord battle.net launcher steam any app usually has it and as well as in chrome or firefox, im thinking either hardware acceleration is causing this or c state bug currently less likely is vram memory leak but that would explain issues Nvidia users are having broken c state can cause system freezes i am just not sure if it can also freeze gpu driver and cause it to crash.

Interesting thing i just discovered, i hoped it was only wow retail that freezes the computer, that is not the case as wow classic wotlk also freezes it…

Those are still wow clients tho, question is any other game freezing like non Blizzard games cos all the blizzard games have deadlock issue right now if you analyze process which can also cause system freezes i believe.

Anyway either wallpaper engine was causing my system freezes or c states cos i disabled c states right now i wonder if AMD broke C states cos i know c states with curve optimiser is not stable on newer firmware but is on older firmware altho seems that c states is also not stable on older firmwares it just wont give errors while new firmwares do give errors.

Started freezing again in wow almost as if there is a shader cache issue causing gpu to freeze the entire system as result, where does wow store its shader cache cos im gonna clear it each startup now cos clearly something wrong with the game probably not my system this is way to random… and way to annoying.

Time of the freeze i had high fps reported in game but i have fps counter on 2e display that reported lower fps so there was a fps spike causing this, i wonder if its shader cache problem causing fps to go up higher then it should causing instability or something.

If blizzard plans to ignore this any longer im gonna open a ticket and demand refund to the game this clearly only happening with wow i cant figure it out i cant fix a computer that has zero errors ffs im losing my mind, im not even alone with this issue clearly shader cache builds up after couple of days playing new expansion content and when its hits a certain time limit it starts to freeze the entire system every couple of hours probably until shader cache is invalidated due new driver or cleared…

Please investigate.

Im going so crazy i connected bare minimum hardware to the PSU only essential and put my old evga 1300 g2 on my PC rest unplugged open case agressive fan profile im confident if its shader cache issue i wont crash for least 2 or 3 days, since i installed new gpu driver and cleared shader cache everywhere including wow cache folder.

Running as usual but all hardware acceleration turned back on everything so if its a driver issue or wow issue it should happen now within 2 hours unless if it shader cache issue it take bit longer.

Read online that deadlocks can cause system freezes so this is defiantly a world of warcraft issue, why is blizzard ignoring me ?

rare gpu driver crash system freeze i guess we can rule it out to be power supply issue then, the game keeps running when gpu driver crashes please patch this cos this is probably when it freezes cos of gpu driver crashing on the same place.

Im highly suspecting something like shader cache causing this im gonna put back old psu and start clearing shader cache every time i start the game just like i used to in the past on my Nvidia gpu.

gx log i think the errors may have been around time gpu driver crashed.
Im gonna clear shader cache data for until i have gpu driver or system freeze for now see if it has any impact cos this used to fix my flickering on my old gpu

anyway maybe useful logs.

A small note i have to run with MPO disabled in wow or i get blackscreens many users have reported this fixes their blackscreens, AMD drivers are currently broken, but system should not freeze on a gpu driver crash, i wish the game would just exit as soon gpu driver crashed to avoid more annoying problems.

2 google searches highly suggest rtss is culprit if always suspected it but never been sure until now, i hope nightmares stop now else im gonna lose my mind
Sorry for repeatly bumping thread but im also trying to figure out on my own whats going on, i don’t wanna leave people without clues what could be causing this cos some one else may be more lucky then me.

edit: getting more tdr’s instead now

Im starting to figure out if system freezes are related to rtss, however still get tdr’s so if turned back on MPO hoping its more stable now, and uninstalled rtss, im starting to suspect that rtss is also playing a role in the blackscreens im suffering from with MPO being broken on AMD radeon drivers since 22.7.1

Thank god I’m not going crazy then! More people have this!

Yesterday it started for me. It all went dark, as if my screen had turned off, but I could still hear the sound. Then the PC started trying to reboot to no avail, until it finally succeeded, but my screen was now filled with horizontal green lines.

I did some digging and it looked as if the WoW crash had caused my Windows 11 to somehow reject my GPU driver.

I updated the nVidia driver and another crash.
I updated Windows and another crash.
I then double checked my GPU was properly inserted (obviously it was) and I also did a power reset, and another crash.
Today I logged in and right when I loaded into a BG (a couple of minutes after I had logged in), crash.

I tried playing another game and no more crashes. Not even 1.

So, this is definitely a WoW issue.

Now I’m trying to Scan and Repair the game. Let’s see if that works!
