Auto scaling is broken

Been playing Wow since vanilla. Played in every expansion bar BFA. Came back a few months ago and noticed my Warlock was massevily under powered compared to my friends warrior. Heard BFA was melee centric so thought no more of it as we levelled together and everything died just the same.

Now levelling a Belf mage. Was fine all the way up to level 17/18, then my spells started taking much more hits to down mobs. At first thought it was my imagination but then tested it by killing an elite mob I killed 5 levels lower with relative ease and this time it wiped the floor with me. Took much more hits and had to kite the git for 10 minutes. WTF is going on?

Is this an example of auto scaling? Because if so it is totally broken.

Do I require an active subscription to post on the WoW forums? I have prepaid for the next three months but not not maintain active subs in case I stop playing and forget to stop payment.
