D2 on Windows XP? What works what does not?

Hi all,

I would really like to buy D2 but unfortunately I am getting mixed information on how to go on with it.

The premise is easy: I don’t have money to buy a new gaming PC, so ideally I would like to stick with the cheapest way of running it (ideally Windows XP).

According to the shop, Windows XP is supported: euDOTshopDOTbattleDOTnet/en-us/product/diablo-ii

But according to this forum article, Windows XP support was dropped: euDOTbattleDOTnet/forums/en/bnet/topic/17625552451

Questions:

  • if I buy D2 today from battlenet (e.g. online), can I install & run it (incl. downloading patches?) on Windows XP?
  • Is battlenet only important for online gaming? Or is it like steam, so important to install and run the game as well?
  • If I am not able to use battlenet, and I play offline all the time, can I at some point (when I have money for PC) transfer my character to online? Or do I need to restart from scratch?
  • Is it even worthwhile thinking of online?

Much appreciated to receive some comments

Hello Freakazoo,

Thanks a million for your question. Indeed, the information on the shop page is not correct and I have requested an update there. The information on the support article, stating that the minimum requirement is Windows 7.

To your Questions:

  1. It can work on Windows XP but that is not guaranteed as the minimum requirement is Windows 7 now.
  2. For Diablo 2 only you wouldn’t need the app as Diablo 2 is not part of the app being a classic game. For all the other games on the app, the app is required for installation, patching and social features.

Kind regards

Kiemmaki
