I think this command should be added to online play since this is one of the things we lost in the online version when the split between online and offline occurred.
How did we lose it you might ask? Well it’s simple, if you had let’s say druid Bob and you wanted to level quickly you’d join online with others and get the benefit of playing with others but get barely any loot probably, if you didn’t know the people you were playing with.
Once you were high enough level, or tired of only being a spirit of the oak buffbot getting loot scraps, you could play solo, and fine tune the difficulty to suit your capabilities to boot.
Let’s say the current system is really… toxic, you make a lobby for let’s say chaos sanctuary and you have 4 people clearing chaos sanctuary and a constant shifting stream of 4 other people joining to do keybosses/lower kuras/travincal and leaving right after they got their goal or discovering someone got there ahead of them… this is just not good.
Solution: make the current Play button support /players command and leave the Lobby button for trading/leveling/playing with friends. Please make this or something like this happen.

The /Player command has ALWAYS ONLY been possible for SINGLE Player (non battlenet)/“offline” play. It has been this way forever even in legacy D2.
Please explain what you mean by “Since this is one of the things we lost in the online version”?, Do you mean the online version from like 20 years ago lol?
What you have said is correct but you are missing a point I might have not explained that well.
With the old D2 you had a choice to play your characters on battlenet and you didn’t have a /players command OR let’s say if you were bored of playing with others or had no internet connection you could play the SAME character offline and you could use the /players command.
This is something you cannot do anymore, I want to be able, just like before, to take my online character and decide: am I joining a lobby where I play with others? or am I playing solo and I want to farm on players 5 let’s say…
As of D2 LoD… circa 2004 I can tell you this was NOT possible… Honestly i dont think this was EVER possible since the intro of battlenet. Someone please correct me if i am wrong… Perhaps I am wrong prior to LoD released?
You couldn’t play a B-Net-Chracter offline. (they were also NOT stored local on your hard-drive. You had to log in at least once in a quarter-year to not loose them…) BUT:
Non-B-Net characters were possible to play as well offline as they were to play onlne (probably on the risk to get in a cheater-game, if you didn’t start the game, and even then mods of other players could work, even if you didn’t had any of your own.) You also could join mod-games, and the did work for you. (I did join mass-monster or mass-drop games several times with my non-b-net characters.)
Now, only online-characters are able to play with other players. And you need to have mods installed for your offline-characters without the possibility to just joining a mod-game. And there is no non-b-net-lobby anymore.
Oh I get it now… You (and I am assuming the original poster) are talking about TCP/IP…
Yeah, I guess I never heard that referred to as “online play” before. When someone says “online play” I assume battlenet.
Original poster dude… You could have said TCP/IP lol…
There was the open bnet too. I guess thats what he is speaking of.
Well, yes, officially “open battle-net”. But if someone talks about B-Net, (including me) he/she means “CLOSED”, normally.
TCP/IP refers to LAN nowadays, doesn’t it? Well, as said, there also where online-play via “OPEN” B-net. That’s not possible anymore. So, a “players 8”-command for your online-characters is something to consider, I think. But only for non-ladder, when that comes eventually.
Pure LAN-Games where also possible, of course.
I’m sorry for the confusion I’m a dinosaur when it comes to tech. I was seven when I played old d2 on my brother’s bowazon around 2001 and I 100% remember he could play that character solo(which I did mostly and the /players command worked) or with others but I wasn’t allowed to do that without him watching(so I played this rarely).
Now was that TCP/IP? Was it open bnet? I don’t know, It was a very long time ago and I didn’t even know to navigate the menus that well as I was just starting to learn English.
I just find it sad that the current online version of D2 doesn’t allow the option to form a solo online game where the command works.
I’m not asking for the character to switch to offline for this or anything like that as I understand that there are security complications, just implement something similar to what was possible before.
