Game crashes often when entering towns

In about 50-90 % of cases when a character enters a town by joining/creating a new game or using a town portal, at the end of the loading screen, the game starts to show the mouse pointer and play sounds from the area, but then crashes immediately to the desktop.

So far, I’ve played to act3 in classic (pre-expansion) mode on bnet and the problem occurs with all three towns.

In the successful cases, where a town has been entered normally, with my video settings the game runs at (for me acceptable) 25-35 fps and from then on, I can keep playing and walk between various areas without problems. Only entering towns causes the crashes.

The problem occurs in both windowed and fullscreen mode, and with various resolutions. I have tried changing the desktop resolution and disabling scaling and running the “Scan and Repair” tool – it makes no difference. The in-game resolution scaling setting is set to 50 % and all other video settings are set as low as possible.

My computer is a Microsoft Surface Laptop with the following specs:

OS: 64-bit Windows 10 Pro, build 19043.1237, the system and all drivers are up to date
CPU: Intel Core i5-7200U
GPU: Intel HD Graphics 620
RAM: 8 GB

Switching to legacy mode before using town portals or waypoints reliably helps to avoid the crashing.

Unfortunately, when first entering a game, loading a town with the new graphics cannot be avoided. Because of this it often takes me 10-20 attempts to enter a game. Once I’m in, I can keep playing by using this workaround when needing to go back to town. Any kind of runs where you have to enter new games very often are pretty much impossible though.

I have completely reinstalled the game and still get the same behaviour.

I experience exactly the same as above. I’ve tried several things to prevent crashes. Is the crash a problem with the server? Please fix asap

I have the same issue according to the log you posted:
same error with Mesh vertex format is invalid. Filename: ‘data/hd/objects/shrines_other/deer_shrine/model/fx_cloth_lod3.model’, Mesh: ‘deer_shrine_tarpShape’

I’m guessing that it’s a problem with Intel GPUs because other people in similar threads have also reported that they use Intel cards.
