I know I’ve complained a million times before but now it’s taking the piss. I’ve got a maxed out holy bolt paladin (I don’t use FOH due to how little dmg it does without being fully geared for it) with fair gear (enough to clear hell with), max res, max block chance and my dmg is good enough to kill things with few hits.
However, everytime I play in hell difficulty on P1 settings, the Council in act 3 wipe the floor with me, chaos sanctuary do the same even though I keep my distance and let my merc take the hits, 1 hit from anything drains my health bar to 0 instantly. Seriously this should not be happening. A few hits to kill me, yes. However, 1 hit, not a chance especially for a paladin.
I’ve seen loads of youtubers using absolute garbage, have - on some resistances with none maxed at all, no max block and just tank everything and kill things like they’re on nightmare difficulty, wtf??? I can admit when my characters shouldn’t be able to do content that’s out of their depth with the crap they have on but this is BS seeing how these other people face tank all of hell with crap on and hardly have any dmg dealt to them and when they do, they survive it. Has anyone noticed this, honestly?
I’ve tried hammerdin, he gets 1 hit killed as well. My attributes is 110 strength, 135 dex (max block) and the rest into vitality. My health is at 2500 (including CTA). Is there a bug or a glitch that’s causing me to die so quickly?
I have also got a sorc with Crescent Moon PB and Tals set pieces on. She has max res and 2300 health and she does great in almost every level (except the council due to immunities) hardly a scratch on her. I try to up it to P3 and she to gets slaughtered immediately. I really am trying to understand this game compared to how it was back in it’s D2 LOD early days. I just cannot seem to farm anywhere efficiently to get better items and I’ve been trying LK runs and am nearing 1000 runs in total with my sorc and the highest rune I’ve had is a Lum rune. I’ve also got 290% mf, can’t get any higher with out leaving my sorc wide open.
I play offline solo due to my connection going off and on a lot. Is the loot a lot better online than offline or is there no difference?
Please understand, I’ve been playing this game since it’s release and have struggled to farm for better gear and still struggle with certain area’s content which at this stage shouldn’t be happening. I should at least have 1 character able to slaughter everything on hell P1 by now and not have to worry about it. It’s been nearly 1 year and I still don’t have a 100% farmable character. I’m not saying I should have it all on a silver plate but my plate shouldn’t be empty for all that hard work and effort I’ve done within the 1 year of this game’s release, if you know what I’m saying.
There shouldn’t be many monsters that can oneshot you from 3k hp to 0. In every HacknSlay there are combinations of abilities that get dangerous. Here are some modifiers you should be worried about: [Amplify Damage Curse], [Lower Resist Curse], [Lower Resist Aura], [Corpse Explosion].
Most council members have affixes like Added Fire Damage, or Frost Damage. So a dangerous combination can be Amplify Damage Curse + Lower Resist Aura + getting hit by a Council member with said Affix. It will multiply the damage and you can get oneshot by it. Also keep in mind the damage difference from 75% resistance to 50 resistance is twice as much. So a lowered resistance is highly dangerous. In Travincal there is nearly always a well or a shrine where you can disspell the curse before you reengage. Also Max Block is good but it doesn’t protect you from death. I highly advice you to stack more 20life small charms in your inventory and overcap resistance to protect yourself from lower resist curses / auras.
And the other tipp would be avoid getting hit. Reposition yourself when enemies get close and cast your holy bolts from range.

Thanks for the reply. I do try and keep my distance and let my merc distract the mobs but if they’re ranged, they do randomly attack me instead, which is weird cause my merc is closest. I have played this game long enough to know about elite packs abilities which, is why I’m finding my deaths annoying because I’m not cursed with amp dmg or slowed and if lower resist cursed my res are a minimum of +65% on all my reses except for fire which is maxed at all times. This is why I’m confused about being 1 hit killed.
I’m not sure if my defence has any reason behind this. All monsters according to my defence rating has a 38% chance to hit me, except for act bosses which is then a 84% chance to hit me. Does this have anything to do with my deaths do you think?
In Travincal, I got lucky with my map as there is always a well next to the swamp next to the council. Also my inventory except for 5 squares, are charms full of +life besides the +9 cold res and 15% mf charm.
I do have one question as I’ve tried the web and it keeps giving me BIS endgame builds, do you know any pure budget builds for summon druid and Bowazon? I only ask as I enjoy playing as them but do not want to progress into hell with my builds yet as they will imo get slaughtered. My bowazon has an Insight bow and is a hybrid fire/ice build but the dmg is falling off in act 5 Nightmare. My druid is a summon druid and has an Edge bow on as the thorns have been amazing up until act 3, now it’s dropping off and my summons kill quite slow as well.
Defence is like Block. You avoid the damage completely but it doesn’t mitigate damage when it fails. There are items like Harlequin_Crest or String Of Ears( Unique Demonhide Sash) or Enigma that reduce damage by a % value.
Most physical based builds require a strong weapon and crushing blow, so instead i would focus on elemental damage, which is based on Skilllevel of the ability. Freezing Arrow is usually the skill to focus on early. You can swap over to a phys build when you have a Windforce bow or Faith runeword.
I don’t know a hole lot about summon druid. But i would guess you need a lot of +Skills to make it viable. Check out the website rankedboost for build tipps or just check out the items and make your own that’s usually the way i do it.
Both Bowazon and Summoner druid arent builds btw, that work that well in general with budget gear.
Frost-Bowazon or Fire/Frost Hybrid might be your best bet here, but it still isnt something which can be safely called a cookie cutter build.
Summoner Druid, even with strong gear, is D Tier at best. You will not have an easy time through hell with that one for sure.
Good playthrough builds, that dont need much gear and can solo hell, and can be fun - depending on your preferences are
FO/Fire Sorc, either +Hydra or Fireball
Wind Druid
Trapsin
Javazon
Summoner Necro
Bonemancer
FoHdin (though for solo playthrough you might have to charge through some areas and skip things)
Frenzybarb (requires at least a good weapon, but from my experience, you’ll usually get something playable in NM if you dont rush and farm a bit)
You can do off-meta things, sure, and it can be a lot of fun to do so. But most of them are offmeta for a reason (well except TS/DT Assassin, which is crazy good and no one play it), so you have to work through more obstacles than with S/A Tier builds
e: If you want a build that can farm everything nearly naked, try Wind Druid. He is extremely sturdy due to cyclone armor, heart of the oak and double tank in merc and grizzly and he has a mix of cold and physical dmg from his skills. You can farm any area with him and he rarely dies due to absorbing elemental dmg and large life.
First of you should confirm what exactly is doing so much damage to you. One hit kill with 2,5k life is strange. That said elemental damage (hydras, cold ench with light ench, all accompanied with conviction aura ench can be very deadly) For example you loose res from 75 to 00 (not exact numbers just to illustrate) and the damage goes up 4x. Overstacking fire res helps and some forms of magic damage reduced against hydras in general.
A true death sentence are fanatics. If a boss mob with a fanatic aura is there, run. Especially if it’s also cold-enchanted and you don’t have “cannot be frozen”.
I struggle with melee-assassins especiially in the beginning, and especially with cold-enchanted mobs, even in normal… The combination, which almos alsways kills me before I reach level 10 is a cold-enchanted mini-boss with ranged minions… At that time, you rarely have a belt with more than 8 slots… and those healing-potions melt down like snow in the desert…
As for hell: There has just the PTR 2.5 gone online. (last Thursday, I believe) There are several hell-characters, including several Paladins. Perhaps you just try one of them and look at their gear… (but the hell-characters have quite good gear. I think this is quite difficult to achieve in SP…)
BTW: the NM-characters are starting hell-characters. (the difficulty mentions the FINISHED one, not the starting one.) So Characters, with an H or “Hell” in their name, have FINISHED hell and are very good gear-wise. I would try the “NM” characters to test hell. (Although, you won’t get to act V hell with those, I suppose. I Didn’t try that, however.)
