Is there any point going ladder as a casual?

Hey there,

Wanted to go play a bit of D2 again, and I was planning build a new char. And I was wondering : is it worth it to wait for the ladder coming on 29th April ? Is there any rewards to grab, as during the D3 seaons (some cool stuff or anything) ?

I’m not a big try-harder of Diablo games : I love them, but I only run accros the story mode with a new char from times to times, and once I beat the final boss I’m done. So I was wondering : should I wait for the ladder, or should I not care about it ?

Thanks guys, see ya in hell

yes. its active.

I forgot to say I only play D2 solo tho

No, it’s not worth to play the official D2 ladder.
No, there are no rewards.

It’s mostly a playground for botters that try to get some real life pennies out of a 20 year old game, either way or another. Or JSP users that will sell stuff for huge amounts of their forum gold to desperate show-offs in the first week to later spend it on other games.

The ladder is gonna be corrupted 3 days in. Add to that the typical D2 micro lag when playing online, no matter your connection or hardware and you got yourself an easy answer.

That’s the prime reason most D2 streamers play SP exclusively. If you want something halfway fresh go and play Project Diablo 2. It’s the superior game anyway. And the solo dev, who isn’t hired by a multi-billion dollar company actually got rid of bots and hacks.

I agree with kandrax, as long as the game is in the state its in, then its completely waste of time. I only play offline to get rid of all the online problems.
There you can also play with great mods, wich can make the game more fun and better.
I play without immunes, and thats a hole other game where i can farm with all builds. This alone have made the game 100 times more fun for me.

If you want to play self-found solo, ladder is as good as non-ladder probably, except you get access to a few more runewords and recipes this time. So in fact it actually might be better to do ladder play. This is additionally true if you enjoy a fresh start and an empty stash and do like the challenge, and want to leave yourself the option to play together with other people, even if not regularly.
If you experienced major connection issues in the past from playing online and can absolutely exclude yourself from group play, offline play is probably the best option.

The often applied downsides of major botting, class imbalance and broken economy are tbh only relevant if you are trying to run for a ladder position or want to trade a lot for value, for pure casual gamers those are usually non-issues.

So its a matter of personal preference and needs if ladder play is something for you or not.
I would consider myself casual as well, I have quite a deep insight in the game mechanics but not much time those days, so diving to deep into the ranking and economy thing would be hard for me to do anyway. But I enjoy the fresh start and toying around with the new options, while preferring online play over offline all day, even if there might be connection issues on very rare occasions. So I’m probably in for the ladder this season.

Not in a D3 way. But there are ladder-only runewords that can be taken to non-ladder after end of season.

the only thing i like in ladder is doing the reset with a bunch of people and having fun together for a while.

so I guess if you don’t play in groups, there’s definitely no reason why should play ladder.

There is: the ladder-only-runewords that may give gameplay advantage for some avatar styles

Btw. you can play non-ladder AND ladder in exchange. It’s nearly essential to play and try different char/skill combinations. This is what people made play D2 for years.

Well Ladder is full of bots so remember that you can clear the whole chat with “N” !
But I see no reason why you shouldn’t play Ladder as casual, after ladder your character is a normal character so you won`t loose anything, aside from that there are some runewords like insight that can only be crafted in Ladder and become very expensive in normal later on.

Insight? All runewords are no ladder makeable except the new ones from patch 2.4

Nice if it is so it was a good change.
