Since there is no feedback forum for different language versions of the game i thought i’d post this here.
I’d like to start by saying original D2, apart from few translation errors was translated very good. Unfortunately the bugs in translation were never fixed despite many requests from polish community.
Most infamous bug was making poison damage over time into lightning damage over time.
Some of the things i post here I also submitted in beta however they were not yet fixed.
Dwarf Star was translated into Niebieski Karzel which stands for Blue Midget - original D2 translation was Krasnoludzka Gwiaza which was correct.
Voulge was not translated at all. It should be Spisa and Colossal Voulge as Kolosalna Spisa. Currently Translation says Kolosalna Voulge which is really weird.
Trang-Oul’s name was changed to Trag-Oul - poor fella.
Frostburn had perfect translation which was Ognisty Mróz - someone in D2R translated it into Odmrożenie which means Frostbite. Close enough.
Tal’Rasha’s Lidless Eye was translated into Tal’Rasha’s Open Eye. It should be Bezpowiekie Oko Tal’Rashy rather than Otwarte Oko Tal’Rashy.
All the armor, boots, belts items of higher level as in: Wyrmhide, Demonhide, Sharkskin has lost their meaning.
They were all translated into for example: Demonic Gloves, Shark belt and so on.
They no longer indicate their origin.
Khutar was changed into Katar and while both of the names are correct in polish version Katar also means Runny nose.
Unfortunately there are many more translation errors that made it to the game. I havent found all the items to verify either but i’ll keep an eye out.
Hopefully someone can read it and pass to the translation team and we get some fixes going on.
It would be really shame if D2R shared original D2 fate where translation bugs were never fixed.
Also when you press G for legacy mode most of those items are translated correctly as it was in old D2.
+1
For someone who has played a lot of D2 back in the days, those changes to item names with new graphics mode are heartbreaking.
I’d like to add some other examples to list above:
Archon Plate originally called ‘Archońska Zbroja Plytowa’ is now ‘Archoncka Zbroja Płytowa’
Flamberge was ‘Koncerz’. Now it’s ‘Flamberg’
And probably as said previously this is not a full list of ‘normal’ or ‘uniq’ items which names were changed.
Just don’t change what was not broken. Please use names of items from legacy mode
You “polished” (pun intended) ancient names Talic, Madawc and Korlic and replaced “c” in their name with a “k”. Talik, Madawk, Korlik. That looks silly.
I wonder if Blizzard translate their company name across the world… In that case i’d like Zamieć to change it back.
There was also change to Bartuc weapon now it’s Bartuk.
Why was it done in the first place?
As poster above said there is no need to change things that aren’t broken.
Old translation was really good it just had few nasty errors in it.
There are some weird ones, but I don’t agree with all criticism.
There are no Dwarves in Diablo, so “Niebieski Karzeł” for Dwarf Star is a scientificially accurate translation (it’s a type of a dying star).
Frostburn seems to be an old synonym for frostbite.
I don’t see a problem with Katar, it’s also a name of a country in Polish.
Voulge and Spisa, Flamberge and Koncerz are different weapons, so the old translation was more of a substitution.
Lidless in English is also a metaphor for “watchful, as with unblinking eyes; vigilant”, so you don’t have to translate it one-to-one, “Otwarte Oko” is more accurate, like in phrase “mieć oczy szeroko otwarte”.
Alright, I respect your opinion, but we would like to know why this change even happen?
It’s been there for 20 years now and still is with legacy mode, why change it now?
As far as I know same ‘translation’ issues are in other languages for example Italian or Spanish and probably Russian too.
Why didn’t Blizzard change any item name in English version?
I have a good idea - ‘Waterwalk’ silly name for boots, why not change it to ‘Sandals of Jesus Christ’. ‘Harlequin Crest’? It’s just a green hat, ‘Shrek’s skin’ would be more appropriate.
Imagine hundreds or even thousands of topics ‘BUT WHY?’.
Unnecessary change.
Hey and thanks for the input. I gotta admit i haven’t given much thoughts about some of the items.
If that’s what they meant then i’d agree.
It is indeed
I didn’t say there’s a problem. Both of the names are correct but Khutar does seem better imo.
Koncerz was actually wrong used name in original D2 that’s correct.
“Bezpowiekie Oko” sounds much better in games like D2.
But thanks for explaining it was really insightful.
I still can’t get past TRAG-OUL instead of TRANG-OUL as well as the armors, belts, boots, gloves that are missing their origin of making.
I wonder if they going to fix some things.
I also read a lot about replacing voices of bosses - it was done because some of them have new lines added but Diablo saying “Dochodzisz tak daleko” it makes me chuckle. He’s right though.
Most of them has voices like in disney movies now. Too bad, we really had decent scary voices before (apart from Baal, hes a joker!)
