I have problem with Lowering the Requirements on the item Ogre Axe in order my Merq to be able to equip it. In fact it is really working and my Merq can equip it.
However, the stats from the weapon did not apply on my Merq e.g. the damage stats show value like the Merq do not have any weapon equipped.
Is this a bugg or it is normal mechanic for the Merq

Does this Ogre Axe give your merc additional strength? If yes, is he able to wield this axe without that bonus?
I experienced similar issue with my merc recently. I gave him a weapon with +X to str. He also had +X to str from another item, so everything was fine. Then I removed that other item. My merc still had enought strength to hold his weapon, howewer, he didn’t use it in combat.

It is not only with mercs. I wanted to use the Ali Baba (which is a unique version of a tulwar I think) which has some dex requirement, and my sorc naturally didn’t have it. But Ali Baba also has +dex on it, so I thought I could cover just the difference, but no, Ali Baba’ bonus did not apply itself if the initial requirements were not met.
As far as I can remember in D2 LOD that was possible but seems to have been considered a bug (like Andariel’s quest, Nihlathak’s portal etc.), and the devs decided to «fiх» it.
