I am playing D2R again after many years and found myself at level 38 in Act II Nightmare as a (quite poor) Fire Sorceress being completely beaten by the Fire Immunes as I have nothing for them.
I have a Leaf and my Fire Ball is level 23 with synergies does 742-833 damage. But I have nothing on Cold/Lightning and had forgotten that on Nightmare you start to get immunes!
I have one reset skills left with Akara. I know that if I get this reset wrong then this character will become unplayable and the only option would be to make another character or to get rushed to Hell in order to gain another reset skills, and basically completely miss out on the progress.
However I read somewhere that D2R can read, and play D2LOD save files. This is true, all you have to do is copy the save files from D2LOD to the D2R save game directory.
You can now use D2LOD characters and gear in order to test things out, in my case how exactly to set out additional Cold skills to be able to deal with Fire Immunes in Act II Nightmare
Also, testing out the Merc, what gear he needs to stay alive, what type works best etc.
Obviously there would be no need to result to Single Player games and all this roundabout way, if only they let us reset skills more often at any level!

Sorceress should always have alternative secondary attack with another element. If you are playing Fire sorc, more probsably you will want cold dmg - max Frozen orb.
And in D2R you should have ways to reset skills by crafting Token of absolution, for which you should be able to farm Hell bosses.
Check out some guides at d2jsp (.org)
lucky i do magic dmg so my necro dont need to worry sht lol
Well, you got to go past Act II Nightmare first before you can start farming Hell bosses! I am level 38 still, and do not want to get rushed, I want to progress through the levels.
D2R is very compatible with D2LOD which means I can try almost anything and see what works and what does not, skills, spells, weapons, merc etc.
For example even though my Merc has 70% AR and 4% LL, those Fire arrow undead in Act II sewers ( Radament’s Lair ) completely destroyed him in 3-4 shots. I need to practice to see what kind of weapons/armour he needs to be able to stay alive. Maybe missiles go through armour? Need to test.
I can do all this practice on D2LOD SP but cannot do that by reading a guide. Most guides skim over lower levels and then show you all the godly gear you should have at levels 85++. No one much cares what happens at 20, 40 etc.
Still a lot of good guides suggest which skill to level first and usually have budget gear options.
Your merc for NM Duriel should be tanky and preferably have cold resistance. Have some cold damage to slow Duriel. You Act2 merc with def aura should be able to survive at least 10sec.
If you are struggling killing Duriel, get to the boss, open Town Portal and do dmg, while your merc is alive. When your merc is about to die, return, heal up and repeat.
Even if it takes you 10 loops, it’s costs nothing, compared to resurrecting your companion each time.
Otherwise you can also join any multiplayer game and find someone to kill Duriel together.
I usually go full blizzard and either ignore immunes or static field them and let my merc do the rest if I really want to kill them.
Good choice, but dude plays fire sorc and doesn’t want to spend another respec.
But having at least 1 point in static field helps!
True as just mentioning it, as you don’t even need gear to make it viable. All the other builds suck without gear.
Thumbs up for your last sentence. It’s what I always hated about Diablo 2: That you need to choose the skills in the beginning, even when you don’t know how they work and how strong they are!
