Augment ancient or primal ancient item

can somebody please explain in mere mortal terms…i have read several times but still uncertain…kanai’s cube recipe 10… AUGMENT ANCIENT OR PRIMAL ANCIENT ITEM

What needs to be explained?

Insert in the cube the item to be augmented + 3 flawless royal gems + legendary gem of at least the minimum required level. Press transmute and the item is augmented with STR/DEX/INT. The normal gems define which main stat gets applied (rubies = STR, emeralds = DEX, topazes = INT) and the legendary gem level will define how much main stat you get (5x gem level).

Let’s say you want to augment ancient boots with DEX. Put the boots in the cube with 3 flawless royal emeralds and level 50+ legendary gem, press transmute and it’s done.

i guess i should have been a bit more specific…i don’t understand about the legendary gem part, is it a gem we would regularly use and if so is that gem now tied to that specific item, or do we upgrade a legendary gem we don’t use because its lost after transmute.
…and can the gem be still upgraded after transmuting??

The legendary gem will be consumed in the augment. Because of this it’s typically best not to sacrifice any useful gem but some useless one instead.

okay…so glad i asked…can you get this gem as a double doing rifts after you consume it?

Any legendary gem you don’t have in your stash or character inventory will be reacquired in the very next GR you complete. So you can augment your items as often as you want.

okay very last question, different level gems for different items, it says level 30 or higher, level 40 or higher etc…is there an advantage to making the gem as high as possible before the transmute or would a level 50 or 60 etc be all the same result…?

Let’s see… Which is better? 250 more main stat from a level 50 gem (50x5) or 500 more main stat from a level 100 gem (100x5)?
If level 100 is too high get it to at least 70 or 80, depending on how much and how well you play… and how good the item you’re augmenting is.

The colour of the non-legendary gems determines the stat that will be added to the item, i.e.
Ruby = Strength
Emerald = Dexterity
Topaz = Intelligence
Amethyst = Vitality

The rank of the legendary gem determines the amount of stat that will be added, i.e. legendary gem rank * 5 = amount of stat added. So, a rank 30 legendary gem would add 5 * 30 = 150 stat, a rank 50 legendary gem would add 5 * 50 = 250 stat, and so on.

When the augment is applied to the item, the legendary gem and non-legendary gems are consumed.

It’s possible to overwrite an existing augment with another one, e.g. if you had used a rank 30 gem to apply a 150 STR augment, you could later use a rank 50 gem to apply a 250 STR augment, overwriting the 150 STR.

What constitutes a “useless (legendary) gem”?

Generally anything that isn’t used in any builds. Something like Invigorating Gemstone, Moratorium, etc.

By the way, you do realize you just necroed a 2 year old thread?

yes, does that invalidate the question? :slight_smile:

Generally necroing old threads is frowned upon.

If the question is seriously meant, it doesn’t have to be a “useless gem” it can just as well be a gem that you don’t have any use for, other than the purpose of augmentation. (Players will often make copies of gems to be used for augments, and a useless gem for augmenting will usually be a gem with a level cap).

It was seriously meant. & tyvm Jazz & Kirottu for y9our responses. It seemed more helpful & efficient to link my question to this thread (old tho it may be) than to start a whole new one, esp. to new players who might otherwise have had to scour the threads to find it…

Make sure that the gems you want to use for augments do not have a low limit. Most gems can go up to 150. Others up to 100 and some can max at lvl 50. Do not use obviously the last two categories. “Invigorating gemstone” is what I do my augments with most of the time, but there are others too. Make multiple copies of them and have fun :slight_smile:

So I finally got my first primal and decided to Augment it. Without actually taking time to go to the forums and read how this works, I dropped a lvl 50 random legendary gem in together with 3x random Flawless gem… So now my DH have primal boots with Intelect on them… So stupid.

Now my question, can I drop a new Augment on the boots with the correct gem and overwrite the intelect augment? Feel so dumb as it makes perfect sence in hindsight.

Of course you can! Do not worry.

The next augment you put in this item is going to ovewrite your previous one. You just lost 10 grs of your time to get a gem to level 50, that’s all. You can augment an item infinite times, and it will always keep the last augment you used.

Yeah and unless you play a support, then 99 % of the time, you augment with your class’s main stat. In your case, dexterity.

50 by the way is a fairly low level gem. I am sure you can do it with a higher gem.

Thanks for clearing that out. I thought ruined my Primal by dropping the worng stat on them… Happy it’s all good, just need to grind a gem as high as I can, lvl 100+ isn’t a problem.

Happy to be of help. Only way you can ruin an item is if you salvage it, reforge it with the second cube recipe or reroll the wrong stat at the Mystic. For augments thankfully, this is not the case.
