Hi I am trying to augment an ancient weapon for the Altar of Rites and I cannot for the life of me figure out why my Caldesanns Despair transmute keeps failing.
I have 1 ancient item, a legendary gem of high enough level, and 3x flawless rubys
Any advise on why this isnt working would be a great help
Show a screenshot of your ancient item and another of the cube just before you hit the transmute button.
What error are you getting ?

Its not letting me provide a link to a screenshot.
Ive posted it to imgur, 1htbjuF
It just says “transmute failed”
OK – show me a screenshot of that 2-handed flail.
According to your profile on Faraday#2627 - Community - Diablo III , the one you are wielding is ancient. What about the one you are trying to transmute ?
To post a link, you need to convert it to preformatted text… put the link in your reply as you would normally, highlight the entire link and click on the </> button (button #6) on the formatting bar at the top of the composition window.
Your link will look like so: https://imgur.com/1htbjuF

That flail is not ancient… and that is why you cannot augment it:

Right I was under the assumption ancient was the term for green items, my mistake then

I was working on this screenshot to illustrate the difference… I might as well put it in – perhaps it will help someone else.
In my screenshot, the equipped 2-handed flail is ancient… the other one is not:
Best of luck in your games !

The good news is that you can augment all ancient items and not just weapons. Although im sure you know that already.
