I have just purchased Diablo III Eternal collection. Should I uninstall the free version of Diablo III where you play Act 1 or will my purchase automatically overwrite/update the game files?

If you purchase under your current account, you don’t need to do anything. (Paid by credit card may take a few days for the payment to reach Blizzard.)
Once the purchase completes, the full content will be unlocked. No need to update or reinstall the game.
However, a purchase may reset the campaign progress to the beginning. You can change the quest from the game menu to the last one you have completed. You just need to re-do the last quest.
Can’t remember the exact details but sometimes it may be necessary to activate the upgrade in the Battlenet application (redeem a game code or something like that)…
