Altar of rites allow a level 1 character to equip level 70 items. But what happens to the equipped gear on the level 1 character when season 28 ends and the level 1 season character become non season?
Presumably the items will remain in their slots but are treated as “unequipped”.

Interesting question. Maybe the items will drop off the first time the character is loaded and the items will land in the inventory or on the ground (if inventory is full).
This is unlikely.
If in non-season you equip a level 70 weapon socketed with the Gem of Ease (rank 25+) to a level 1 character and then go to unsocket the gem, the weapon will remain in the weapon slot but is treated as “unequippep”. It will have red background and provides no benefit.
