I was wondering if I can play (on Switch) Diablo III online with my friends (on their PC/Mac)?

There is no cross-platform play available in D3.

Additionally it’s important to keep in mind that PC and console versions have several key differences in gameplay mechanics and such which prevent even theoretical crossplay.

Crossplay between different consoles could theoretically be possible but each console manufacturer hosts multiplayer themselves and don’t like to cooperate with others.

That’s an unfortunate. I have D3SR but I recently bought for Switch as well, though I had no idea about those differences.
