Are the plans for the Staff of Herding still available? I have accumulated all of the other objects and thought “Why not finish it?” I have literally tried 97 times (I started counting to see how many tries it took me after 26 attempts to get the gibbering gemstone.) I have tried 71 times in Adventure mode and 26 times in Campaign mode.

Make sure you kill the correct boss. The plan will eventually drop.

The correct boss is Izual in act 4 on the Great Span, right? I have read that it could drop either in Adventure mode or Campaign mode. I am level 70 Necromancer with 650 Paragon. It should drop at any level, right?

Yes this is right. Izual drops the plans for the staff. The difficulty doesn’t matter. Doing these type of things is far more convenient in adventure mode than in campaign. Many reasons, most importantly you can jump right from the start of the season to any portal in the world and have access to every area. For me, the plans took 3-4 tries, a long time ago when i tried to farm the portrait. It was by far the easiest piece of the puzzle but that changes from person to person i guess. The other materials took many more tries. I eventually managed to create the staff but stopped farming the portrait after 20 or so tries. That was the limit of my patience and i never really liked the rainbowy things in D3. lol
