I know most ARPGs do not have WASD, I agree that objectively it’s easier to navigate with Point and Click movement, however for combat is rather annoying for some people (me included obviously).
Here are the issues:
1- Not being able to move and target at the same time. You either attack or move out of the way of enemies attacks, not very efficient.
It makes combat way too clunky and encourage the development of carpal syndrome in your wirst.
Having two different inputs for two different tasks by having WASD to move and the mouse to target and shoot, it’s the logic way to go IMHO, and avoids straining your wrist.
2- My cursor tend to disappear during crowded fights, so I am not able to target efficiently, I don’t know if that’s only me but I do have this problem in many games where there is lots of stuff going on the screen (many mobs, spell particles effects etc). It’s not my rig as I have a very good PC so the cursor doesn’t actually disappear, it’s just that my eye cannot spot the cursor fast enough in the middle of the chaos of crowded fights, so I end up clicking blindly often ending up with disastrous results.
3 - Because of #2, when I move to a position to dodge enemies, and then try to retarget the enemy, I have problems finding the target (losing my cursor) and end up clicking blindly usually missing the target and actually moving towards the enemies and get wrecked.
I don’t understand the stubborness of not implementing WASD in ARPGs, just because the original ARPGs didn’t have WASD that doesn’t mean they can’t be implemented as an option.
Implementing WASD movement is the simplest task in developing a game, I messed around with Unreal Engine and the simplest thing to do when designing a game is implementing WASD, so it’s not a technical problem that requires months to implement, it takes literally minutes.
I understand that in some instances Point and Click can be an advantage, for instance when you have to circle enemies or Dots, but in general WASD is way more useful at avoiding mobs/damage.
So why not having it as an option?
There are literally no Cons in doing so.
Please support “+1 WASD” guys!
